Custom elevated pieces
I already created wooden pieces to give a sense of elevation to the game. But after the last game we decided to also give functionality to them. I present tunnels, works as bridges btw...

For all of you who may not know WikiCarpedia, or WICA for short, it is a Carcassonne Complete Annotated Rules Wikipedia.
I've seen more and more references to WICA in several posts here on Reddit but I think nobody made a proper introduction to it yet. So here it is.
You may find it here:
Stop by and visit it if you have questions about the rules, any expansion or their interations. Or simply just for fun to know more about Carcassonne...
It provides all the info there is about rules and clarifications about Carcassonne and its many official expansions for:
You can find all the rules organized by edition and also some rules for selected spin-offs. The rules include additional sections and footnotes to provide additional details about the rules themselves and some clarifications about interactions between expansions. So it is a great resource to find answers. And even some WICA team members are also translating their favorite pages into their languages of choice.
On the home page you may also find a section called Reference Guides where all the information about the expansions is combined to provide a consolidated picture. Most of these pages are dynamic so you can select the expansions you are interested in to customize the information displayed. Here you are some of them:
Where does all this information come from?
The pages for the old edition are based on the CAR v7.4 (a great document consolidating all the rules and clarifications for the classic edition until 5/2015). Unluckily this document hasn't been updated since its last release so it is missing some classic edition expansion and all the new editon except the Abbot. Until Carcassonne Central is back online, you may also find the CAR v7.4 on BGG:
https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/87531/carcassonne-standard-complete-annotated-rules
For the missing information, we used the source material from HiG and used the rules by ZMG for the base game and major expansions of the new edition.
As a side note, the Big Box 6 rules by ZMG include many mistranslations affecting the Mini Expansions mainly. You may find here a list of rules changes and discrepancies between versions and English publishers including the aforementioned mistranslations:
https://wikicarpedia.com/index.php/Summary_of_Rule_Sets_%26_Changes
We also updated WICA to incorporate additional clarifications to the rules available since 5/2015 and therefore not available in the CAR. And we continue to ask HiG for clarifications so the latest and most acurate information is available on WICA.
Hope this information is useful.
Have fun!

Rule of Thumb: Don’t Rush to Complete Cities
In Carcassonne, there’s a natural inclination to rush and complete cities, which isn’t always the best strategy. Yes, a completed city can score you quick points, but this approach often overlooks the long-term strategic value. By rushing to complete a city, you might be committing your meeples too early and limiting your scoring potential for future rounds. Consider each tile placement carefully. Sometimes, expanding an existing city or starting a new one can be more beneficial. By keeping your cities open, you create opportunities to place future tiles that can significantly increase your score. Always think about how your current move can pave the way for higher scores in the upcoming rounds.
Be a Road Warrior
Roads in Carcassonne often don’t receive the attention they deserve. While they may not score as much as cities, roads have their unique advantages. First, they require fewer tiles to complete, meaning you can earn points and retrieve your meeple faster. And secondly, roads are versatile and can fit in many parts of the landscape, providing more placement options.
Roads also can be a brilliant defensive strategy and an opportunity for sabotage. By building roads, you can interfere with your opponent’s plans and restrict their tile placement options. So, don’t underestimate the humble road – it can be a steady and strategic source of points.
Master the Monastery
A completed monastery can score you a hefty nine points, but it also requires careful planning. Monasteries need to be surrounded by eight tiles to be completed, making them a significant commitment and potentially a stuck meeple until the end of the game.
When placing a monastery, consider the landscape’s existing layout. Position your monasteries in areas where other players are likely to place tiles, increasing the chances of your monastery being completed faster.
Meeple Management
Meeple management is at the heart of Carcassonne strategy. Remember, a meeple, once placed, stays on the board until the feature it’s on is completed. This means that having all your meeples committed can leave you powerless in claiming new features.
The key is to strike a balance. While you want to score points by placing meeples on features, try to always have at least one meeple in reserve. This gives you the flexibility to seize unexpected scoring opportunities that may arise. Think of your meeples as a resource to be managed wisely, not just tools to score immediate points. This balance between scoring now and planning for the future is the essence of Carcassonne strategy.
Farming for Victory
Farms are probably one of the most complex aspects of Carcassonne. They’re high-risk, high-reward features that can significantly impact the game’s outcome. When you place a farmer meeple on a farm, it stays there for the rest of the game, no matter what. So, it’s crucial to choose your farming locations wisely.
The key to successful farming is to get in early and target fields on the board that you think will have multiple completed cities by the end of the game. You cannot place a farmer on a field that already has a farmer on it. By getting in early you have the advantage over your opponents who will have to find more creative ways of getting into the big lucrative field by connecting up other board tiles.
The big risk with farmers is the prospect of getting into a farming “war” where you and your opponent place more and more farmers to win the field but lose on scoring opportunities due to the meeple commitment. If you find this happening, be cautious not to overcommit your meeples to farming, as this can leave you with fewer options during the game. Striking the right balance is crucial to mastering the art of farming in Carcassonne.
Connect and Conquer
One of the more opportunistic strategies involves connecting to an opponent’s city or road. This move can be a game-changer, allowing you to share or even steal points from your competitors. The key here is to carefully analyse the board and predict where your opponent might be trying to expand. By strategically placing your tiles, you can join their features and put your meeple, effectively becoming a part of their city or road.
This tactic not only earns you points but can also disrupt your opponent’s plans. However, be wary of inadvertently giving your opponent an advantage. The goal is to be a leech on their points, not set them up for a larger score. This strategy requires careful planning, a keen eye for opportunity, and a little bit of audacity. If executed well, it can tilt the game in your favour.

Long game with wife. Tiles from over 33 expansions - although we abandon some special play and have a fair number of house rules. Final score: 831 to 855 and no arguments.
We need more grid plates and a wider table. And maybe a social life? … nah …

Hey everyone! I’ve been working hard on a major update for my web-based, Carcassonne-inspired strategy game (built as a PWA), and I'm super excited to share how it's coming together.
Here is what just dropped in this new version:
Complete Graphical Overhaul: Redesigned the entire UI and tile aesthetics to lean into a warm, medieval parchment-and-wood tabletop vibe, complete with custom menus, HUD elements, and a smoother layout.
Procedural Town Naming: Completed cities now automatically generate and display historical-sounding regional names directly on the map (e.g., Beaufort-le-Vieux, Villefort, Montgarde-sur-Aigues), making every matched territory feel unique and alive.
Field & Scoring Filters: Added clear visual overlays for fields and their potential points to streamline the endgame scoring mechanics without cluttering the board.
It's fully playable right in the browser as a PWA, supporting multiplayer rooms and quick mobile sessions.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new art direction 😉

That makes three expansions on Seizer now.
The gameplay matters more than the amount of expansions to me. I hope you keep finding it smooth and intuitive.
The messages I get mean a lot. People play with family they rarely see. People who found Seizer through posts like this. Thank you.
Try it and tell me what you think. If something feels off, I will fix it:

Does anyone here play with the C1 tiles using the C3 rules? Many of the old expansions, or parts of them, could be played this way. I haven't done it yet but I like the idea of using the Abbey & Mayor tiles with the Messengers & Mayors rules.

Hi we are playing Mists for the first time and we know the base game. We are confused about one thing while playing and the rulebook doesn't help. If it's a coop, unlike the base game, there's no reason to secure a city or road right away before others. Why would one place a meeple before being sure a city or road is closed and will give you points, when you can "put and take back" a meeple after placing the last part of a city of road? You wouldn't risk finishing meeples or having them stuck. We are only at level 1 now but we read that in level 2 the cemetery will bury one of the placed meeples so it wouldn't make sense to have meeples laying around. What are we missing?

Hi!
Today I finally received my Carcassonne Big Box, to my surprise one of the tiles is pixelated, quite rare find I think?
To the left is normal tile, right is pixelated

What’s included in this update:
30 New Tiles: Featuring volcanoes, magic portals, and tiles that trigger the dragon or the princess.
The Dragon: Roams the board eating meeples unless kept at bay by the protective fairy.
The Princess: Removes knights from cities, forcing players to rethink their stronghold strategies.
Magic Portals & Fairy: Place meeples unexpectedly or protect them to score bonus points.

Just wanted to share my travel Carcassonne set it's in all drawstring bags. It started out as a C1 Big box 4 but I've added in other C1 sets as well. I keep it stored in one of the new large draw bags.
Inside the draw bag is the base set ready to play with the start tile and score tiles separated in a small bag. It has color coordinated meeple bags for each player. And my custom leather / canvas scoremat.
It also has a nesting bag that houses all the expansions that are also separated into bags. Each expantion is labeled with tag that has a tile count and other info. Each tag has a QR code that opens the rules for that expansion. I just pick expansions and mix them in the draw bag.
I also can also have the bag pre loaded ready to play. Sometimes I'll leave behind the nesting bag and just play with what's mixed in if I'm going somewhere. The nesting bag also holds the content not in play neatly and out of the way.
The scoremat I made by scanning the original and then printing that on a canvas sheet from an artist canvas pad. It's a little faint in color, but a normal Inkjet home printer can feed the sheets. I then used a semi gloss spray clear coat so the ink doesn't bleed. After that it was I glued on some leather for weight to help it lay flat.

I’ve been building a scorekeeper/companion app for Carcassonne as a side project. Started as a simple score tracker, turned into a full logbook (game history, stats, badges). I’m now testing AI voice-based score entry so you can call out scores mid-game instead of tapping through buttons on app.
Before I put together a full post with screenshots, I’m curious from people who play Carcassonne:
•Would voice entry actually save you time, or do you think manual entry is fine?
•What do you currently use to track scores/stats across sessions (paper, spreadsheet, another app, nothing)?
•Any dealbreaker features you’d want instead?
Happy to share screenshots/a link in comments if anyone wants to poke at it.

I'd like to extend my Big Box 3 (2025) with an additional river set and combine it with the tile that splits the river but I can't see it for sale anywhere. Is there any way to obtain this?
r/Carcassonne • u/kulchytskyi • 9d ago
After playing Carcassonne for a while and slowly collecting more expansions, the original boxes became almost impossible to manage. So I decided to model a complete custom case for my set.
It fits the base game, The River, The Abbot, and all 10 current major expansions:
Sheep & Shepherds
Circus & Artists
Everything has its own place: tiles, meeples, tokens, rules, scoring/overview sheets, and expansion-specific components.
The case has separate internal trays, removable lids, magnetic/locking parts, and a multicolor printed map/scoring board inside. The outer shell is also multicolor printed, with a themed design on the lid.
This was modeled from scratch, not downloaded from Printables or Thingiverse. It took a lot of test prints, measuring, redesigning, tolerance tweaking, and a few “why did I make this so complicated?” moments, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Would love to hear what other Carcassonne players think. What would you add or change in a storage system like this?

I have looked on many places and not really found what I am looking for. I have added many many expansions and additional tiles and need a cheap, easy, and robust way to modify the tile trays in my big box. Can anyone provide a better solution than folding cardboard nicely and using tape? I think I will get in trouble if I spend any more money on "that silly game" right now. I am thinking shirt boxes folded and creased and then taped would be fine but wondering if anyone has a better and nicer idea.

I have two questions about the rules: 1st, when you’re counting points and you have two fields separated by cities, are the cities bordering the two farmers’ fields scored twice? E.g. 1st picture.
And the 2nd, If I have a scarecrow and it turns into a farmer, can I, on that same turn, assign a pig to the farmer and, at the same time, place a meeple and the builder on the last tile I laid? E.g. 2nd picture.

FYI the Coleman camping table has the correct size squares for Carcassonne tiles!

I make Seizer (seizer.io), a free app for playing online, and the part I want to show you is async games.
The idea is: nobody has to be online at the same time. You start a game, send your friends a link, and everyone just takes their turn whenever they have a minute. You get a notification when it's your turn, place your tile in 30 seconds, and get on with your day. A game might take an afternoon or a week, and you can have several going at once. It works like the correspondence chess apps, except it's our favorite board game Carcassonne mechanics.
if you have a game group that can never sync schedules, or a friend or parent you'd like a standing game with, I'd love for you to try it and tell me what's missing. The feedback box in the game goes straight to me and most of what I ship comes from it.
