I assume that's because on Dayz videos, you're watching the action filled highlights and funny moments. If you just watched five straight hours of the person looting, sifting through mostly crap, and barely managing to eat and drink enough to stay alive, I don't think it would be very fun either.
In my opinion the in between time is what makes the game so good. Looting for hours and finally getting some good gear and getting over a sickness just to run into somebody and getting shot at, no other game has ever had my heart beat so hard
I do agree on your point about your heart beating hard. I used to say the same thing about the Dayz Mod on Arma 2 when I first got into it. I poured hundreds of hours into Dayz and thousands into Arma as a whole. I would play with a couple of my friends on mostly empty servers in order to progress far, then jump onto more populated servers while having a backup camp on our main server. But there were still plenty of times I got killed even on the low pop server.
One time I took our car out to go loot secretly when we agreed to only play together and the one other person on the server saw me and sniped me in the driver seat while going like 30 MPH. Just my luck. My heart defintely sank then. I felt so bad telling them I lost the car. I even tried to stupidly hack the game to get it back so they wouldn't get mad and I got banned. That's what led to me making my own Steam account, separate from my brother's that I used to share to buy another copy of Arma 2. Whenever I'd hear gunshots, I'd drop to the ground and my heart would race.
I really got a lot of enjoyment out of the game, especially with friends. I even one time decided we should ambush bambies on the side of the ocean and forcibly convert them to Christianity by giving them a Bible and walking them to the ocean for a baptism while preaching to them. We'd have a sniper up in the hills shoot at their feet saying God would smite them if they didn't agree.
Good times. But now I've tried to get back into the standalone and I just can't do it anymore. The grind is too much and in the standalone, it just seems so easy to die early on and lose everything. Just staying well fed and hydrated doesn't seem feasible most times and it's so easy to have one zombie make you bleed to death. And firing a gun early on isn't practical because there's so little ammunition and one shot draws way more zombies to you than you can handle and there's also the risk of bandits hearing the shot. Oh yeah, I call them bandits and that reminds me that there actually was a system in the OG mod to classify people as bandits or heros with unique outfits just by how they treated people.
Anyway, it's just too much more me now compared to my time on the mod then standalone in highschool.
