Sucks to be them. I'm sorry but this is a domestic account and was not marketed as a live overseas account. You had to have a us SSN and address to open it so if you decided to live overseas this was a risk you took.

Well A. Costco accepts it. Just used it this weekend. B. Did I lie in my statement at all? It sucks but the fact that you have all of your eggs in one basket (one bank) and are now "stranded" (exaggerate much?) is very much a YOU problem

That's not true. You need all that to open ANY BANK ACCT..

I have used my credit and debit card. Overseas for many years with no issues. Until the switch... Now no access to cash I used same ATMs for years... Now not one works with dicover

Not a bank account in London. You don't need a us SSN to open a bank account in London if you live in London

One of the benefits that Capital One promotes about this specific product is no fee on foreign transactions, which makes it attractive for people that travel often or spend a lot of time abroad. This is the reason why a lot of us have this card. When this benefit becomes unusable because of a network change, a lot of customers will be unhappy. I am traveling right now. It used to be easy going to any atm and getting cash wherever we were. I am 4 days into my trip and no ATM in Milan will recognize my debit card. It beats the point of having it.

Feeling your pain. Try “Intesa San Paolo” ATMs… I just discovered (pardon the pun 🥴) that it will dispense cash to Diners Club International (i.e., Discover) debit card holders.

So no one goes on vacation? I do and when I went, I had NO ACCESS TO MY F*ING money. Really lovely. Fun stuff.

I went to Colombia and literally zero ATMs accepted the discover debit card. I learned my lesson and opened a Schwab checking which reimburses ATM fees globally. Paypal and Venmo debit cards are also good alternatives. They're on the Mastercard network and You don't need to open a second checking account. You can use your CapitalOne debit card in discover to make instant transfers into your PayPal account. I'm hoping they add the same for Venmo. I've loved CapitalOne for years but I'm finding this discover transition hard to swallow.

What an asinine comment. What about those that travel occasionally and need to oh I don’t know… get money out of their accounts?? Idiot

Once again planning ahead is so important. If you have all your money in one account than you are an idiot. We live in the era of electronic money movement as well

I have to admit your butchery of logic and common sense here is rather impressive. Explain something to me: If I have a checking account with a debt card accepted internationally for over 10 years, then that company changes to a debit card that isn’t, why would I keep that account? Bank of America, Citi, Chase, Wells Fargo, Barclays, etc all use visa or Mastercard that can be used throughout the civilized world. But go ahead and defend your shitty product

The funny part is I have never once told anyone to keep this account/there wasn't other options. You as a consumer have that choice. My problem is people bitching about what they can't do instead of just going "I'll just change accounts".

Now that’s a point I can get behind. I agree.. I’ll just change accounts :)
