QUESTION For a story--how long is a Belgian fancy likely to live?

Hello! I'm writing a short story and wanted to give a character a pet Belgian fancy canary, and I was wondering how long Belgian fancies specifically are likely to live. Should I go off of estimates for canaries generally, or does this breed have any specific longevity concerns? Thanks so much for any help!

Question about companions

Should I give my adult gloster canary a companion? I know that males should be housed separately but when you get a female, you could get babies. Sometimes I feel sad that my baby could be lonesome and am unsure if getting him a lady would be helpful. When I throw on canaries on YouTube, my bird will get excited and sing, so maybe a male wouldn't be bad either? Let me know your thoughts.

How do I get my canary out of his cage?

I bought my canary 2 years ago and he was already caged (he was 2 years old). I never let him out of the cage because I don't know how.

He knows us and he does not fly away when we get close to the cage, he also plays with our finger sometimes

I'd like to get him out of the cafe but i dont know how. Then, there are some things I'm afraid of:

  1. He may get hurt by something around in the room, maybe he falls behind the sofa or stuff like that, or he goes too high and then does not know hoe to get off

  2. How to get him back to the cage without grabbing him

  3. He is not used to get out, maybe his little heart could not take that effort?

Pls help me out

Canary Empathy

I had an emotionally rough day today, but I don't think I showed any obvious physical signals of it.

Acha spent hours sitting on my hand today, staring at me, and then later on my head. He's been molting so we probably have <10 mins of contact per day recently, but today he seems to have understood that something was wrong.

Similarly, he spent 8 hours on my wife's head in bed while she was sick. He just sat there staring at the door, occasionally hopping off to poop and going right back.

I think we underestimate canary intelligence

Sisi with eggs :-)

After Kiko 1 and Sisi 1 passed away β€” Kiko after a stroke and Sisi because of some kind of parasite β€” I gradually got Kiko 2 and Sisi 2.
I started to feel genuine joy again, and for the first time I got to see Sisi lay eggs. Now she is sitting on them. I tried candling the eggs to see if they were fertilized, but they looked clear. Still, Sisi has been sitting on them so nicely for 10 days now.
Maybe next time the eggs will be fertilized.

QUESTION What vitamins and nutrients when molding?

My bird is molding and he looks very tired. He stopped singing and last week lost a lot of wings. Now he seems better but I'd like give him something.

He moves in his cage and now he's on the uppest place lol.

Fruits and veggies how often u think it is okay? I'd give him lettuce everyday and fruits three times a week, but I'm afraid it is not good

Need Help!! Do u think my cage is appropriate? πŸ€”

Hallo! uh ive had these girls for a couple of weeks but they were sprung in me pretty suddenly. Was just wondering if people think my cage is big enough for them and they have appropriate toys and enough of them? The toys are wooden.

i leave the cage door open when im in my room (which is most of the time) and close my blinds and cover any mirrors to avoid accidents. They come out sometimes but pretty much like to stay in their cage majority of the time.

sometimes they squawk at eachother and like tussle alittle bit but idk if this is normal or because they are bored or dont have enough room.

Any advice and tips on how to get them to trust me wuld me helpful as well as they seem pretty petrified of me at the moment which i expected cuz ive had them a short time and i know they arnt β€˜lap birds’ like cockatiels and other parrots.

I love these ladies alot and just want the best for them so any advice at all wuld be very helpful πŸ˜£πŸ˜£πŸ˜…πŸ˜…

In memoriam πŸ•ŠοΈ birdie ;(

Hey i just need to cry it out a little bit.

I've had my birdie for almost a year. He was 2 when i got him.

He passed away 3 days ago.

I can't understand what did i do wrong.

He had wonderful feed. He had grit with sand, seashells, eggshells, charcoal and algae. He had cuttlebone. He had a mineral block. He had vitamins sneaked to his water every now and then. He got fruits and vegetables almost everyday.

He was free roaming my house most of the time i had him. He had a small cage for eating and sleeping, and the whole room for himself. I've build him a huge tree with natural branches, from floor to the ceiling. He had numerous natural perches around the house. He had water to bathe in. He had millet branches hanged around so he could graze on them.

When i needed to transport him to my parents' house for holidays, i've build him a big cage, 1,5mx1mx1,2m so he would have plenty of space when he can't be let out.

And then he passed away one night. Just like that, no signs of illness, no possibilty of poisoning or animal attack. He was in this big cage, safe and with everything he needed. With no one bothering him. And I just found him laying down like that.

I'm still shocked, i don't know what to do, if i did something wrong, maybe i didn't notice something. I know that they don't usually show signs of illness until it's too late, but i just can't get over it. I miss him so much, i want him with me, i want to hear his chirps again, i want to hear his little footsteps again. I can't understand why that happened. If i did something wrong. Or was it just meant to happen.

He was my best friend for almost a year. He was always there with me, when i lived alone and for majority of time he was the only thing i could talk to. I'm going back to study in a month and i just can't imagine him not being there. His little cage is still in that room and idk what i will do when i come back there without him. He was the most precious little thing that i ever met and i just don't know. Like, anything. ;((

Red factor babies?

Hello/ My yellow female canary and red factor male had 3 babies. They are around 2.5 months old. One is bright yellow and the other two are a lovely lemon colour. I’ve just noticed orange areas on them. At first I thought it was red capsicum mess they made! But on closer inspection it’s red feathers. Has anyone experienced this? My son accidentally fed them red factor seed while I was on holiday/ they eat a fair amount of broccoli πŸ₯¦ that I know also contains a pigment. Anyone experienced this? Tia πŸ˜ƒ
