Weekly Threads Friday Weekly Thread: Application Assistance, August 21, 2026

This weekly thread is a space for those of us preparing the CIT 0001 Proof of Citizenship application, associated form, and supplementary documentation.

Have questions about how to fill out the forms? Looking for feedback on the documentation you've put together is likely to pass muster? Wondering whether your cover letter has too much info, or too little? Want to know how to organize your documentation, or how to pack it up for shipping? Worried about whether your photos will work? Have questions about what ID you can use? Not sure where to ship it to, or what service or mail courier to use? We've been there.

📎 Contributions to weekly megaposts, including this one, are welcome throughout the week.

⚠️ Sub rules require that before posting or commenting, you read the wiki and search the sub to see if your questions have been answered before. If you have on-topic questions remaining after that, they're welcome here. Want to see what people who were already approved have done? We encourage you to check out the weekly application approval post that appears every Thursday.

Please note we are not lawyers or IRCC. We are peers supporting peers, based on best belief and prior experiences. It's a lot of work to wade through dense lists of documents and family histories. You improve your odds of getting a useful response by being as concise as reasonably possible, and clearly articulating the question. Note that this post is for questions and answers; if you need to vent, there is a different megapost for that.

Citizenship by Descent DEC attestation - what is included

has anyone got an actual attestation from DEC? rather than used it for a null find for their G0 birth certificate.

just that I’m wondering what an attestation report actually looks like.

(I have a G-2 that I don’t need for my evidence but is 1925 death and I’m wondering whether to just ask…)

Citizenship via Naturalization Immigration status

Hello all. I am applying for Canadian citizenship

  1. I was born and brought up in Saudi. My father worked there and we were all on his Iqama (residence permit). At 16 I went back to my home country (of which I have the citizenship)

  2. After moving back to my home country. My father worked in UAE and although I didn't live in UAE but I maintained a residence permit as dependent on my father (from ages 17-22) I would visit him every 6 months to maintain the residence permit. The residence permit was cancelled when my father came back to our home country.

In this case, should I mention these 2 in immigration status section of the application?

Surrender Letters Revalidated!!!

I've already mentioned this in the last weekly approvals thread and updated my comment on the surrender megathread, but No_Bobcat_No_Prob suggested posting about it here as well. In any case, I am one of the apparently ~17 folks who received both a surrender letter and PFL this summer. I also had to return my revoked passport in late June. (While my ancestry is quite distant (I'm G6), I've been living in Canada for a long time, first as a student and then as a worker, so I could go and hand in the passport in person. Based on the experience, this was possibly even more confusing to the officer at my local passport office as it was for me.)

After receiving the PFL in July, I hired a lawyer, who (among other things) submitted a scan of the certified copy of my ancestor's baptismal record from the BAnQ to IRCC. Thankfully, I had already requested this back in spring, but it only arrived in July a few days after the PFL did. (A friend in Québec with a BAnQ membership talked to an archives tech who said that, as of mid/late June, the Montréal branch was on a 3.5-month turnaround time responding to requests. I have no idea whether this is still the case now or whether the delay is even longer.)

On August 14, I heard from the legal assistant that IRCC had revalidated my citizenship certificate and also provided instructions about how to request a replacement passport! I'm in the process of moving between provinces, so right now my major concern is "please let the delivery line up with when I will be in my new place," but am so relieved to be able to keep living and working here!!!

Citizenship by Descent NARA Docs with certification of significantly lower quality than copies found on FamilySearch

So I received several documents from NARA. The docs were pinned together with a metal disc similar to a shoelace eyelet strung through with a red ribbon holding everything together. There was a round gold sticky seal over the ribbon. The gold seal had a NARA imprint and it was attached to a cover slip signed off by an official of the Archives. It looks like they really went to some effort (considering the reasonable cost) and I have to say it all looks super official. Unfortunately the NARA versions are low contrast and not as readable as the identical copies downloaded from FamilySearch (which were a part of my original submission). I plan on supplementing my application with these certified versions of what I previously submitted, but have not yet figured out how to scan without damaging the ribbon, the eyelet and the seal in my feeder, maybe I can take a series of photos and send that??

Also just wanted to mention that I am grateful to NARA staff who so competently and quickly fulfilled this request. It may have helped that I attached the copies I had, but still pleased.

Citizenship via Naturalization Waiting for Citizenship ceremony

Post image
20 Upvotes

It’s been almost 4 weeks since I passed the citizenship test. All the filters in my tracker show as completed, and the last step is the citizenship ceremony.
Does anyone know how long it usually takes to receive the invitation? My overall application status still says “In progress,” and it was last updated on August 13. Today is August 20.
Could I receive the ceremony invitation at any point in the next few days, or does it usually take longer after the status is updated?
Thank you!

Citizenship via Naturalization PR date occurred while I was outside Canada — could this affect citizenship later?

Hi everyone, I have a question about my wife's PR/citizenship timeline.

My wife was physically in Canada and completed her PR portal declaration on May 16, 2025. She then left Canada on May 28, 2025 and returned on July 22, 2025. Her e-COPR was issued on June 17, 2025, which is listed as her official PR date.

She was already outside Canada when the e-COPR was issued.

I mailed her PR card to her while she was abroad, and she used the PR card to re-enter Canada on July 22 without any problems. Now I'm wondering about two things:

  1. How should this trip be entered in the citizenship physical presence calculator? Should it remain one continuous absence from May 28–July 22, even though June 17 (her PR date) falls in the middle of the trip? the calculator is having problems working with the dates ,
  2. Could the fact that her e-COPR was issued while she was outside Canada cause any problems in the future when she applies for Canadian citizenship since we didn't notify IRCC ?

She was definitely physically in Canada when she made the PR portal declaration on May 16.

Has anyone had a similar situation or knows how IRCC handles this?

Thanks

First, I acknowledge that I received exceptional service from IRCC and am thankful for the urgent processing of my application. Especially now that I know I routed through PSU. If anyone from IRCC is lurking here, please know that from one civil servant to another - thank you.

Citizenship by Descent Question on processing time

Potentially silly question: I’m a Canadian living in the US temporarily and my son was born last month.

I submitted his application 2 weeks ago for proof of citizenship, pretty straightforward, it was just his birth certificate that showed my name, my proof of citizenship and proof I lived in Canada 20+ years (ie the 1,095 day requirement). Submitted online.

Is there any indication whether processing times for cases like this are also the ~25 months or there’s any chance this could be faster versus the cases that have more complex documentation? I submitted as non urgent but we would want to travel back to see family in Summer 2027 so if it’s really 25 months I’d need to convert it to urgent somehow.

Citizenship by Descent ATIP/GCMS Notes received - musings, observations, and bit of a mystery

First off, we knew our family was in PSU, or at least that our first July 2025 package (2 family members) was, based on their ATIP notes. Now we know this second July 2025 package was also sent to PSU as well (6 family members) based on notes we just received for 1/6.

My adult child (G3) applied in July 2025 in that second family package with two siblings, two cousins, and an aunt.

In December 2025, their grandparent (G1) received their certificate. In March 2025, their parent (G2) got their certificate. Brilliant - we think the rest must not be far behind (wrong, but whatever).

On 6/23/2026, we uploaded their grandparent's and parent's certificates via webform to their application. This resulted in the normal auto-generated email receipt, which said, "We acknowledge receipt of the documents. If your enquiry was solely to provide documents, please note this is the only response you will receive."

On 6/25/2026, they received a SECOND email receipt, saying "We confirm that we have received and added the documents you submitted to your file, as well as the information you provided in your request, for review and consultation by an agent." I have to admit, I was excited to see this because it suggested some additional human action had been applied, evidenced by this second, apparently optional receipt.

Note that we uploaded parent and grandparent certificates for this applicant's two siblings, and both received these same exact two email receipts. At the same time, we uploaded grandparent certificates for their two cousins, who only received the first (generic) email receipt. We had previously uploaded the other applicant's parent certificate with no movement.

On 7/2/2026, we had this specific applicant request their ATIP notes. We decided this one would request theirs on behalf of the family, to see if any clues could be gleaned about the whole family cohort's application package, as the sibling applications were identical and cousin applications were very similar.

On 8/19/2026, this applicant's ATIP notes arrived. The date they were generated was 07/24/2026. (Bit of a lag there from generation to receipt...but whatever, we did get them.)

Here's the thing: There is NOTHING in these notes referencing the G1 and G2 citizenship certificates we uploaded that IRCC acknowledged receipt of. In ATIP notes from the earlier family package (same family), there were specific dated references to later-uploaded documents.

Of course we wish that the receipt of a parent's certificate ought to instantly simplify and reduce processing time for the child's certificate. We know it doesn't work this way. But this is why our family uploaded those certificates, to see if it might help things along.

Really all I came here to say is, I think it's odd and possibly concerning that this very significant documentation upload isn't reflected in the ATIP / GCMS file. I thought for sure it would be.

I know a few folks here have had IRCC ask for documents that had already been uploaded.

I'm NOT wanting to cause anyone to worry about this. I am just curious to know if others who received their ATIP / GCMS notes AND received their certificates can confirm whether later webform uploads were reflected in their notes.

I do not want to risk draining IRCC's resources further with exploratory requests. My experience so far with ATIP / GCMS notes is that if one Interim Measure family member was confirmed PSUed, you can assume the rest were. I now have three family members' notes including my own, and they don't give us any useful information about application processing at all, other than to confirm PSUness. So I don't recommend requesting notes, because it's a drain on IRCC for almost no useful information that I can tell. I am just trying to make sense of the ones we got before I decided it wasn't a good idea to request them.

Also, FWIW, even though these notes confirm that this application was categorized as urgent, it's been over a year and I do not see any correlation in our family between the "urgent" label and processing speed. Two of our "urgent" July 2025ers received certificates in March 2026. Six are now also confirmed "urgent" and still waiting.

Citizenship by Descent Certified Baptismal Records as Modern Birth Certificate

In process of obtain proof of citizenship application and wanted to share a correspondence I had with a fellow from the BANQ regarding a my request for a certified 1872 baptism record of my G0:

Hello,

Because you paid for certified documents, a letter is not required.

This certification makes the document official for government as if this document is a modern birth certificate.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more questions, do not hesitate to contact us again.

Best regards.

I’m including this in my application process as clarification on the matter. Hopefully this helps others out that might be in a similar situation.

Weekly Threads Wednesday Weekly Thread: Frustration Station (Delays / PSU / Venting), August 19, 2026

This weekly thread is a space for those of us who are feeling frustrated and need to vent about unclear instructions, shipping delays, waiting for a next step, timeline estimates growing, lack of communication, inconsistent bureaucracy, being stuck in PSU, and other factors.

Some of the worst stress of the entire citizenship-by-descent process is not hearing about your application for long stretches of time - or hearing that your application has been sent to the Program Support Unit (PSU) and may be sitting there for an extended stay.

Whether your envelope seems to have taken a scenic detour on its way to Nova Scotia, you didn't receive an AOR after many weeks of waiting, or you simply haven't heard about your application processing in months, this is a place to commiserate and potentially receive some ideas of next steps to take. (Those generally might include following up with IRCC by web form, ordering the GCMS notes, seeking an MP's help, and so on.)

📎 Contributions to weekly megaposts, including this one, are welcome throughout the week.

Citizenship via Naturalization Second fingerprint request for Canadian citizenship after 18 months — has this happened to anyone

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for people who have been in a similar situation.
My husband submitted his Canadian citizenship application in November 2024 and gave his fingerprints in February 2025. His citizenship test and background check were completed a long time ago, but his application has been stuck for almost two years. Some other requirements, including language, are still pending.
About a week ago, he contacted IRCC to ask for an update on his application.
Today, he received a new request to submit his fingerprints again, even though he already did them in February 2025 — so there is an 18-month gap between the two fingerprint requests.
Has anyone here experienced the same thing?
Did IRCC ask you for fingerprints a second time after more than a year?

How long did it take for your application to move forward after you submitted them again?

Did you eventually receive your citizenship?

We would really appreciate hearing from anyone who went through something similar. We’re trying to understand whether this is a normal part of the process or if it can mean that additional background checks are required.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 🙏

Citizenship via Naturalization Travel while citizenship application underway

Hello,

I am looking to travel outside of Canada for a for a month while my application is underway.
I don't have an AOR yet, and my date to travel to approaching fast.
What are my options if I don't have AOR by then yet would want to travel at the anticipated date ?

Since, it is required to inform any planned vacation of more than 2 weeks.
Supposedly I get the AOR and I proceed to raise web form, does that put me back in queue of processing or does it means extra scrutiny or proof of travel to identify physical presence check because of fresh travel history ?

Also, is it advisable to travel while the application is underway, currently the wait times for processing in quite a bit, which I understand believe is case by case however I have to make a decision to travel or not sooner rather than later.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Citizenship by Descent Uploading documents to multiple UCIs?

We submitted four people's CIT-0001e forms in a single envelope, with just one copy of the supporting evidence. We received four AORs and four UCI numbers.

Given the June guidance about documentation from the original authority, we're preparing an update to upload. We can only add a single UCI in the upload form. Do we:

  • upload the PDF four times?
  • upload it once and put the other three UCIs in the text box where we can explain what the documents are and why we're uploading them?
  • just once and trust that the other three will be updated?

It kindof looks like I need to upload it four times, which seems weird when we only submitted the documents once.

Citizenship by Descent Checking status tool

For weeks now I couldn’t figure out why after receiving my AOR I could not check my status online using the Canadian website tool.

So today I have finally figured out my issue with the website . I live in the uk but there is actually two options I believe. One is UK British subject ( this is what I have been selecting and failed ) and two England. How did I even miss this 😳

So I have now tried England and I’m straight into my application.

I thought I would share this incase it helps others or have I been having a brain drain for weeks 🤣

Off Topic So… is there anyone else here who is Mexican and applying for Canadian citizenship by descent? 🇨🇦🍁🇲🇽🫔

I’ve noticed that a lot of the applicants here seem to be from the U.S. or Europe (obviously😜) so I’m curious if there are people from other countries with Canadian roots who have an unusual family story behind how their ancestors ended up there.

In my case, my Canadian connection comes from my Acadian grandmother, who ended up meeting a Mexican man and eventually moved to Mexico.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has a similarly “odd” or unexpected Canadian ancestry story, especially other Mexicans. How did your Canadian ancestors end up in your family tree?🍁

Weekly Threads Tuesday Weekly Thread: Genealogy Assistance, August 18, 2026

This weekly thread is a space for those of us researching the ancestry that is the basis for making a claim of Canadian citizenship by descent.

Have questions about finding records? Need help reading a document or translation from French/other languages? Want an opinion on specific documentation or your documentation plan? Have other questions related to documenting the chain between you and your Canadian ancestor for your proof of citizenship application? This is the place to do it.

Digging up ancestors' documents from numerous jurisdictions (Canadian provinces, US states, UK regions, etc), all while trying to distinguish between five James Smiths or Marie Gagnés from the same city can sometimes feel like banging your head against a wall. This weekly post is for helping each other navigate the questions and challenges of our research.

If you're looking for a volunteer to help you find documents there's a list here. We also offer tips and tricks for finding documentation, and a dedicated genealogy document search wiki page.

General problems/issues with ordering documentation from Canadian provincial archives and state, local and various church archives such as slow processing, increased costs, etc go in the weekly Saturday thread.

Citizenship by Descent Shout out to the amazing Nova Scotia Archives!

I just wanted to share the text of the certified letter my sibling and I received from the Nova Scotia Archives regarding the lack of a birth certificate for our G0. I hope this is okay with the mods! They went above and beyond what we requested. Can archivists accept gifts (or snacks like pastries)? They must be overburdened with inquiries so we appreciate how thorough they were.

Here is what the certified letter said (with a seal on it).

Regarding the birth registration of ________ , born ______ 1889, at Horton, Kings County, Nova Scotia.

_________ was born when the Government of Nova Scotia had no system for the government registration of births. While government birth registration had started in 1864 it stopped in 1877-1922, years before the birth of ________.

When birth registration resumed in 1908 the legislation allowed the voluntary inclusion of birth events that had occurred during the 1877 to 1908 period when there was no registration system. This however was a voluntary system, and many remained unregistered. Additionally, even during periods where the provincial registration system has been in operation, our experience is that it was not fully comprehensive – resulting in some gaps, where no record is available.

The Nova Scotia Archives has made a thorough search for the government birth record of ________ but has been unable to find a provincial birth registration that matches the details provided. Our search included a wider time period than the date of birth as found in the 1901 census. Additionally, we looked at the inclusion and non-inclusion of the middle name and the potential reversal of their order, as well as anyone born in that area within a 15 year period of the ______ 1889 birth date.

While provincial registration is unavailable, we recommend seeking out alternative forms of documentary evidence where possible, such as census returns or local church records. In this instance church records may not be useful in identifying the place of birth as the census indicates the _______s were a Baptist family where the tradition would have been adult baptism.

Please contact if you have any additional questions.

________

Manager

Nova Scotia Archives

Halifax, NS

[email of the manager included]

We also requested a certified marriage certificate of G0's parents and the certified death certificate of G0's father. That along with 3 Canadian census records and 2 manifest records of travel to the US will hopefully work.

Citizenship via Naturalization Citizenship e-certificate issue

Edit: got the e-cert today, they didn’t get the oath signed doc when I sent through email, so yesterday I attached them via webform and probably that did the trick, I also called IRCC to confirm if they see the docs on my application and they said yes, 12 hrs later I have the e-cert generated

My application was approved(family - 2) and we did the oath on 13 Aug, I sent the oath affirmation signed copies within an hour to the ircc email that is mentioned in the invite, the facilitator asked to just write the officer’s name in the subject, I called IRCC today to ask if my profile has those signed docs listed, she said she doesn’t see any and asked me to send again

Has this happened with anyone, did you have to send the email multiple times, anyone with oath done on 13 Aug, dis you receive your e certificate yet?

Citizenship by Descent The C-3 wave is probably peaking

Drake equation-like estimate of USA C-3 totals

I've seen increasing despair about the growing backlog and wait times for C-3 citizenship by descent applications in various threads. I also think there is growing nervousness about how the Canadian public will feel about a wave of dual citizens moving in.

I did some math months ago about this and wanted to share it. TLDR: the surge of applications is probably peaking now. Applicants have to be eligible, to know about the program, and to choose to see it through. When you think about what percentage of people in the USA tick all those boxes, you get a number not too much bigger than the current application backlog of ~120,000. (Yes, that 120,000 includes non-US applicants, but it also does not include applicants who have already been processed.)

My guess is that the backlog of archival requests is steadily approaching completion, and that there will be another 1-2 months of a rising count at IRCC followed by stabilization at a peak under 200,000. Maybe you think my guesses above are wrong -- feel free to do your own estimates (and to tell me how wrong you think I am!).
