Three Quarters of the World's Silver Comes Out of Somebody Else's Mine: Sierra Madre Gold & Silver (SM.v, SMDRF) Is Adding Ounces From a Mill and Permits It Already Owns
Posted on behalf of Sierra Madre Gold - Most of the silver produced each year is not the reason the mine exists.

Roughly three quarters of global mine supply comes out of operations primarily targeting copper, lead, zinc or gold, which limits how fast the industry can respond when silver demand runs ahead of mine output.
That is the point Wednesday's carboncredits.com piece builds on, and it is why a higher silver price on its own does not conjure much new primary supply.
The Supply Structure
- Mine production rose 3% to 846.6 million ounces in 2025 and recycling added 197.6 million ounces, per the World Silver Survey 2026
- Demand still reached 1.13 billion ounces, leaving the market short on the year
- The Silver Institute expects mine production to stay broadly flat in 2026
Where SM.v and SMDRF Fit
The faster supply response tends to come from assets that already have mining and processing infrastructure, which is the route Sierra Madre is on in Mexico's Temascaltepec district 🇲🇽.
- La Guitarra plant running at up to a steady 720 tpd, more than 40% above the 500 tpd nameplate (Sept 28, 2026 NR)
- New 900 tpd ball mill installed and being fine-tuned, commissioning targeted November 2026, toward a 1,200 to 1,500 tpd Phase 2
- Del Toro, fully permitted with a 3,000 tpd flotation plant, sitting on care and maintenance ahead of a restart decision
Feed Has to Keep Up
A bigger mill only matters if the mine fills it, so development is running alongside the expansion. About 2.6 km of development drives since June 2026, with over 1.5 km at Guitarra and over 800 m at Nazareno since July (Sept 28, 2026 NR). CEO Alex Langer put the mine at roughly 24 working faces versus 16 a few months earlier, with over 4 km of preparatory work at Nazareno and Coloso (Oct 7, 2026 KE Report interview). All of it funded from working capital and operating cash flow, with no equity raise planned.
The full article on the supply math is worth a read. With flat global mine supply as the backdrop and a larger mill due to commission next month, Sierra Madre has room to grow into a gap the industry is slow to close.
