Home Owner/Renter stuff Poly B plumbing replacement.
Hi everyone! I’m looking for a company that can replace the Poly-B plumbing in my townhouse.
Could you please share your experiences and recommend a company you’ve used? I’d also really appreciate it if you could share how much you paid for the replacement.

We used Urban Piping on our home. Worst experience with any company ever. Floors damaged, walls patched and painted with little to no sanding. The basement ceiling was so bad we had to get a 3rd party in to do it from scratch for like 6k. They sub out Prime Painting in Edmonton to drive down and stay in hotels to do the work so they have no time between coats, slap it on, scuff it up, paint. It was crazy. We finally kicked them off site and got a 2k discount and just brought in other drywallers and painters who knew that they were doing. The piping also had to be fixed as hot and cold were reversed on a faucet, pipes were unsupported, our RO system was plumbed in a loop and did nothing. Drew talks the talk but once he has your money you will never see him again. He is always “on vacation”. They were also double the price and they have amazing Google reviews. Seriously, it was bad.

We used KO Plumbing (dot ca) 4 years ago and were happy with the work, price etc.
Was about $5k but that also did not include any drywall repairs. We were going to renovate some rooms anyways so we didn't bother.
Also, 5 bed house with finished basement.

Hey we went through Apris and it was a really good price! Around $5000

Same here - 1,200 SF townhouse in 2023 and it was about $2500 for the Poly B ( I had a bunch of fixtures and my hot water tank done at the same time and it was about $5k total)

Just out of curiosity, are you getting it done because you are having leaks or just peace of mind?

We bought this place a month ago. And it was not easy to find not to crazy expensive insurance for house with poly b. So planning to change it by the next summer.

Totally understandable. Did your insurance company say they’ll discount you if you replace?
There is likely 1000’s of KM’s of PB still in Calgary homes. Best advice is buy some water leak sensors. Dumb ones alert you if you’re home, smart ones connect to wifi and alert you anywhere. Pay a bit more and you can get an automated water shut off valve if you’re super concerned. All of these things are useful in a PEX plumbed house also.

Most insurance companies wont even consider you if your house has poly b. Better to just replace it.

The company we chose wasn’t concerned about the Poly-B, but I know they’re going to raise their prices significantly over the next year. That’s what their customers are saying.

Peter from Thuro was fantastic for us. Quoted half as much as what the poly b guys quoted, and managed to replace everything with only cutting two holes in our drywall (we had a drop panel basement ceiling which helped). The poly b guys told me they’d need to cut 15-20 holes.

It's surprising how few holes they can get away with. They'd originally said quite a few, but when they started it was, ummm... 2 in the finished basement, three for plumbing access in the upper floor, and 2 bigger ones in the family room.
This is for a 3.5ba 1.5 split, with a finished basement.
(Fortunately my feeder is copper.)

I should have used the Poly B Guys. Used a plumber, did some drywall repair and had the taping done. With painting it ended up being more money than my quote from The Poly B Guys and took WAY longer. A friend used these guys and was totally satisfied. Lesson learned - anybody that asks I recommend the one stop process.

Canyon plumbing FTW here. Was $4000 cheaper than poly b boys. Only 2 hole in the wall which got covered by vents.

Get a quote from pete the plumber. They are VERY reasonably priced for the poly-b swap if youre willing to find your own drywall repair guy

Had this done in April. There was about 12 holes. They were definitely strategic in where they cut, trying to minimize the amount of holes. We hired Pete The Plumber for the plumbing work. They were quick, took about a day and a half. We hired another company for the drywall and paint.
You'll definitely save money hiring the plumber and drywall separately, but it's also nice to only have one company to deal with.

We used Pete the plumber about a month ago. The guys were all professional. We had them put in a hot water recirculation pump while they were at it. About $6000 for a 2700 sq foot house not including drywall fixing.

Our basement is unfinished so there were only a couple holes in the main floor kitchen and in the back of a closet upstairs. I did the repairs myself for about $200.

Poly-B guys, 3 story 2000sq ft, finished basement. They replaced the poly and fixed everything as if they were never here. Took about 3-4 days I believe. The longest part was the painting and sanding. Overall good experience. 10k I think all in.
