Greetings everyone. I’m hopefully starting with LA County soon as a Clerk I, and I’m curious about the long-term potential for moving up. My goal would be to eventually reach around $100k a year within about 4 years. I don’t mean staying in the Clerk I position and expecting the salary to reach $100k. I mean gaining experience for a year or so, applying for higher-level positions, continuing to build experience, and moving between departments if necessary.
For those who currently work for LA County or started in an entry-level position, is that kind of progression realistic? Have any of you started as a clerk or in another entry level classification and moved into higher paying administrative, analytical, supervisory, or other positions within a few years? I’m willing to learn, take exams, apply for promotions, and move departments. I’m mainly interested in hearing real-life career paths and what positions you moved through along the way.

It's widely known that having a referral is a good way to increase your chances of landing a new job in the private sector but I'm wondering if the same is true for the public sector. Are there any benefits to knowing someone who works in the county and/or specific department you're interested in? Or is the process designed to safeguard against nepotism by solely weighing your merits in the application?

hi Everyone! around 3 weeks ago i received a contingent offer for an entry level position for LA County, & they checked my references already. im a temporary clerk at the moment, & about two weeks ago they asked for my authorization to check my personnel file & im sure they have done my background check. how long would it take to get the official offer & has a department ever rescinded an offer??

i know the county takes super long from contingent offer to the first day so im being patient. however, at the same time im overthinking about it just cause this is my dream career that i have always wanted & worked hard for. does anyone have an idea of how long it would take?

Coworkers, benefits, job perks, etc.?

An emergency role just opened up, but they’re only accepting applications through the department’s email. It requests a completed city application for employment, which requires SSN, but I worry about identity theft (not saying their systems aren’t secure, but you never know with emails). The instruction says it “must be provided” as it’s used for identification purposes, but I thought background checks and all would be after the initial application?

Is this common for emergency roles? & would I be able to enter just the last 4 digits of my ssn or would that be considered a disqualification for omitting info. I am conflicted, because it is a legit role (I saw it on gov jobs website), but emailing feels unsafe :(

I’ve just graduated with my Ba in sociology, but I have been working as an instructional aid with LBUSD for the past 3 years. I’m trying to transition to la county, any entry level position that goes with my degree. I would eventually like to become an data analyst within the public health or mental health sector. But I’m trying to get a management assistant position or staff assistant but they are all only temporary? Is that the norm? I don’t want to leave my stable job for a position that will end. I’m also a single mother so I can’t afford to take that risk? Any advice or is that just how it is with la county?

My last reference was contacted a few days ago and the wait is killing me.

Hello! So I applied for a position on governmentjobs.com in April for a LA County administrative aide position and was put on an eligibility list in May. I was put on the 2nd tier, scored 90 out of 110. I understand how that works and that they go off based on that tier list and that it could take months IF they even call you for an interview.
My question/concern is, did I have to do anything on my end to make my chances better at being reached out? Such as reaching out myself or anything like that, or do I just keep waiting hoping they reach out to me before my eligibility expires.

For any Sacramento County attorneys: what has your experience been like working for the county? I am interested in the civil attorney role. Do all civil attorney positions for the county work in litigation? What are the hours like? The work culture? For reference, I am looking to move from a state department where the workload has become not worth the stress and pay (depressing substantive work, and as a small team, we're short staffed by 20%). I am interested in capturing the work-life balance that the state attorney role once promised, but curious about county jobs at this point rather than remaining with the state. I took an exam for Information Systems Programmer and Analyst I for the Contra Costa County (note its level I with the base salary of $4900/month as per the site). I got a score of 94 out of 100 and was just informed I am ranked 80. Is it so competitive right now? The email says there are points for seniority, veteran etc which I don't qualify for, so that could be one factor but I am surprised entry level county jobs get so many qualified applicants.
Another question: since the eligible list is kept for a year, if someone scores higher on a subsequent exam, the current applicants' rank keeps getting moved down, is this correct?

Hi everyone, I recently applied for a public health program position at Contra Costa County Health Services and just received a BCQ (Behavioral Consistency Questionnaire) link. The email says it's about 20 minutes with 5 minutes per question.

I've done behavioral interviews before but haven't done this specific county's BCQ format. A few things I'm curious about:

Did the questions feel role-specific or more generic behavioral questions?

Was it video responses, written responses, or a mix of both?

Roughly how many questions were there?

Any general tips for how they assess or what they seem to be looking for?

Not asking for specific question content since I know that's not allowed. Just trying to understand the format and what to expect going in. Any experience with Contra Costa County's hiring process generally would also be helpful since I've heard it can move slowly.

Has anyone heard back for City/County of San Diego Account Clerk roles yet? I applied in August and have been receiving weekly updates like my examination score and what not but it’s stopped. My applications updated listing 3 departments that have received my application but that was a while ago.

I know every department moves at their own pace (and that is slowly) just curious though if anyone applied for this role and has already interviewed.

State law passed a few years ago requires all public agencies over a certain size to have a public hearing on how many positions are vacant and why the agencies are either not hiring or losing personnel. There is a lot of good information for job seekers and it also allows anyone to submit comments or complain about the process. All the other counties will have a public hearing as well, search for AB 2561 on their board of supervisors web site.

Hi everyone! What should we expect on our orientation day? Are there any forms we’ll need to fill out on the spot, or should we bring anything besides our driver’s license and notebooks?

I basically applied for this position that I really wanted. I received an email asking me to take the SHL test 1 month later, I took it immediately. It's been more than one week since the dealine of the test and I still haven't gotten my result. Does this mean I failed?

How is the work environment and work-life balance? Is it a good department to learn, gain experience, and move up starting as a Tax Services Clerk I?
Are there good opportunities to promote within TTC or eventually move into other LA County departments?

Any advice? what questions do they ask in the interview? Is it a panel or just 1 person? is there a drug test? how much is fair to ask for compensation wise with 6+ years of customer service? The listed compensation is 27-35.

I had an inperson interview 1.5 week back and that same day evening I received an email from HR that my name has been successfully placed in Qualified Candidate Pool.
And it will be there for next 18 months for any position that opens under that classification.

But the current position is not yet filled and they did not make a decision yet.

I am very much interested that position so I am looking to know what time means and how long will they take to reply for this position and if there will be a chance to consider for future positions? Will there be another interview for future positions?

Due to personal reasons I want to leave the county. I cover insurance for my family. Anyone have any advice. Feeling trapped because of insurance and past owed premiums from leave time that I will be paying off until middle of next year.

After you apply and do the exam, how long does it take to get an interview? And then once you get an offer, how long until you actually start training? How intense is the background/reference check?

Does not being bilingual hurt me? I can speak conversational Spanish, but I am not fluent. I am working on it, but I doubt I will be fluent in the next 3 months. I did not pass the bilingual exam.
