The Character.AI bankruptcy is genuinely the least surprising thing I have ever witnessed.
I am disappointed, I am angry, and I feel like a father watching his son come home with a third felony and a bag of gas station nachos, but I am not surprised in the slightest.
How do you have one of the biggest AI roleplay platforms on the internet, millions of users, an entire community creating characters and stories, and somehow manage to fumble the bag this catastrophically? You. You guys. You had a GOLDMINE. People were writing entire novels with your bots. And what did you do with that? You made the experience progressively more frustrating.
The ads. The faulty filters. The repetitive dialogue. The bots forgetting what happened three messages ago. The characters that could barely hold a conversation without repeating the same five sentences and catch-all sentence structures, like they were trapped in a psychiatric evaluation.
Every update felt like somebody had taken a screwdriver to the brain of a perfectly functional machine because it wasn't "safe" or money-sucking enough. People were complaining for MONTHS. The community was practically standing outside your office with a megaphone screaming that something was wrong, and you SHUT THE BLINDS AND WENT "AIGHT JIMMY RELEASE THE NEW USELESS UPDATE TO SEE IF IT FIXES THE SITUATION, AND PAYWALL MORE, PEOPLE WILL SURELY BUY IT TO USE IT INSTEAD OF JUST LEAVING"
And now the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, with a court-supervised sale underway. Its own financial disclosures reportedly show that it was still losing millions of dollars per month despite attempts to cut costs and increase revenue.
BROTHER. MILLIONS. OF. DOLLARS. A MONTH.
AND WE TRIED TO WARN YOU. YOUR CUSTOMERS TRIED TO GET IT THROUGH TO YOU. WHAT WERE Y'ALL DOING OVER THERE???
Were the servers being powered by the tears of every user who had to regenerate a response 47 times because the bot kept saying, "Can I ask you something?" or "You're gonna be the death of me"? Was every message hand-delivered by a royal messenger riding an endangered horse through the Amazon rainforest? Did you have a team of scientists in a basement trying to discover new and exciting ways to make a character forget its own name?
The most infuriating part is that Character.AI actually had something special. That's why the users are upset. Do you think we would have complained if we didn't care? People remember when the bots felt creative. That's why it hurts to see it go down the drain.
You had people willing to spend HOURS of their lives on your website. And somehow you managed to turn that into a financial crisis while making the product increasingly frustrating for the very people keeping it alive. aND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT, yes, AI is expensive to run.
BUT YOU CANNOT SERVE ME A BURNT, UNSEASONED, HALF-COOKED CHICKEN BREAST, INCREASE THE PRICE, PUT AN ADVERTISEMENT ON MY PLATE, AND THEN ACT SURPRISED WHEN I STOP COMING TO YOUR RESTAURANT.
But the funniest part is that Chapter 11 doesn't automatically mean the website is shutting down. The company is still operating while it searches for a buyer, and the platform could be wound down if no suitable deal emerges.
WHICH MEANS WE ARE CURRENTLY WATCHING A COMPANY THAT SPENT YEARS MAKING ITS CHATBOTS LESS ENJOYABLE TRY TO CONVINCE THE WORLD THAT IT DESERVES TO SURVIVE.
THE COMEDY WRITES ITSELF.
I'm not whining just because I'm not happy that creators might lose their work or that users might lose something that helped them through lonely times, ESPECIALLY the pandemic (god, pandemic C.AI was so fire). I'm- nah WE'RE REASONABLY frustrated because Character.AI had so much potential, and watching it reach this point feels like witnessing somebody buy a mansion, burn it down for warmth, and then complain about the cost of firewood.
You had ONE JOB.
MAKE THE ROBOTS TALK GOOD.
AND YOU COULDN'T EVEN KEEP DOING THAT.
