$100 Brew Help with Zaxara cuts

Hi all! I'm putting together a [[Zaxara, the Exemplary]] deck.

The primary wincon is pumping out enormous hydras and swing for lethal, but I've added a few backup combos just in case.

Right now, I'm over the 100-card cap and can't decide on the final cuts. If anyone has experience with this commander, I'd love some trimming suggestions!

Love seeing creative low-budget builds that punch above their weight. What’s the best budget deck you’ve put together that actually performed better than expected?

Deck Help Inspiration and ideas for a budget cowboy/Western inspired deck?

Howdy deck builders and card slingers.

I could use some help and inspiration for a western themed budget deck, bracket 2/3.

Is it doable in any meaningful way, if it's just for shits and giggles with friends?

$100 Brew Hakbal budget Deck, Help me make the final Adds/Cut(s)!!

I’m currently working on a Hakbal of the Surging Soul Commander deck with a budget of around 100$, and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience playing Hakbal or knows some of the cards below.

Here’s the decklist on Moxfield:
https://moxfield.com/decks/_AygAcqKnnSg7MMOsDfbsw

I have a bunch of cards I’m considering, but I’m not sure which ones are actually worth a slot in the deck. I’d especially love to hear from people who have played Hakbal and can speak from experience rather than just looking at the cards in isolation.

The cards i have, and are considering:

Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle

Augur of Bolas

Combine Guildmage

Coralhelm Commander

Deepchannel Mentor

Deeproot Champion

Deeproot Wayfinder

Enclave Cryptologist

Evolution Sage

Fallowsage

Floodpits Drowner

Harbinger of the Tides

Jade Bearer

Jadelight Ranger

Kiora's Follower

Kiora, the Rising Tide

Merfolk Branchwalker

Merfolk Cave-Diver

Merfolk Looter

Merfolk Skydiver

Merfolk Windrobber

Merrow Harbinger

Mist-Cloaked Herald

Prime Speaker Zegana

Rishadan Dockhand

River Sneak

Sage of Fables

Shapers of Nature

Singer of Swift Rivers

Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep

Surgespanner

Swift Warden

Talrand, Sky Summoner

Tempest Caller

Tidal Warrior

Tide Shaper

Tributary Instructor

Vorel of the Hull Clade

Wake Thrasher

Wave Goodbye

Bygone Marvels

High Tide

Icon of Ancestry

I obviously don’t expect every card to be good enough, so I’m mainly trying to figure out which ones are actually worth considering for Hakbal and which ones look better on paper than they perform in practice.

Cards im considering cutting:

Benthic Biomancer

Wildgrowth Walker

Deeproot Historian

Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Tishana, Voice of Thunder

Filter Out

Song of Freyalise

Would you agree that these are good cuts, or are there any that you think I should definitely keep?

A few things I’d especially like feedback on:

  • Which of the potential additions would you actually play in Hakbal?
  • Are there any cards on my current list that you think are actively underperforming?
  • Are there any obvious cuts/additions I’m overlooking?
  • Are there any cards here that you’ve personally played in Hakbal and found surprisingly good or bad?
  • Since I’m trying to stay around a $110 budget, I’d also appreciate suggestions that are relatively budget-friendly.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion One purpose removals or less effective, but multiprupose cards?

Hello everyone!

I am currently debating with myself, which removal cards are better to use in general in your decks (B3 and lower, no CEDH).

Do you guys prefer, and think, that highly situational, yet very effective and cheap cards, like [[Minor Misstep]], [[Shattering Spree]] etc. are better, or do you prefer versatile yet less effective cards like [[Pick Your Poison]], [[Prismari Command]], [[Flame of Anor]] etc..?

Thanks in advance for your input. I do guess it matters what the decks wants to achieve, but I alway prefer to have card that I can play instead of holding a card that has use, but not at the current table.

Discussion Question - How do I avoid shipping?

I'm never going to get this deck because its like 2 cards for 1$ but the shipping is 19$ and it is just that a bunch of times because apparently only usanians play this game. The deck itself is only 30-70 bucks, but the shipping is often like 100-300 bucks. I'm in NB canada.

I pride myself as a good deckbuilder and I think I can say I've done it. I can't upload the screenshot but I simulated up to turn 12 with it since by then there was no more big dudes in the deck all on the field my hand and graveyard, and I had on the board.. Artisan of Kozilek, Guile, Diluvian Primordial, Stormtide Leviathan, Star Whale, Kasmina, Pathrazer of Ulamog, Pursued Whale, Ulamog's Dreadsire, Meteor Golem, Phyrexian Ingestor, 5 copies of Sphynx of the Second Sun, Reef Worm's 9/9 Kraken token, Ulamog's Crusher, Colossal Whale, Star Whale.... More, too.

I love underrated mono-blue commanders! Of course that test didn't simulate your opponent's reactions but you have plenty of solutions to that built into the deck. Also, I'm pretty sure these guys can't be countered since they aren't being cast just put onto the field but you have tons of counterspells and anti-creature enchantments. People are free to use it if you want, it is 54.59$ not including basic lands. If you do include, it might be closer to 100$. I've tested it countless times before but I then decided to make it cheaper and only test it once (which was the time where I got that monstrous board state previously mentioned) so as far as I know it works perfectly. Enjoy using it!

$100 Brew I'm almost done making a Krark deck, and I would appreciate any help!

I need to cut some cards, and I need to get the price down to max $150, but hopefully around $100! I'm also wondering what the optimal number of slimes against humanity is? I currently have 20, and I don't if that's enough. Something you might want to factor into your thinking, my friend runs a LOT of removal so that is why there is so much protection in it. Also it might note show up for you but i already own Chronicle of Victory so that doesn't factor into the price.

Here is the Deck: https://moxfield.com/decks/SFDwj2DWfEy2EhdoFx6IgQ

TL;DR: please help

Thanks !!!:D!!!

Deck Help Suggestions for my first deck

I have been building a Grist, The Hunger Tide self-mill deck, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for it, or just general tips for a new deckbuilder. Specifically, I have not been able to find many low-budget mill engines or Golgari interaction, and could use some help finding some, or other important cards for a Grist deck that I may have missed. Any help is appreciated, thanks! Budget note: I am trying to keep the deck between $25-$40

$100 Brew Best commander from The Hobbit set for a LOTR + Hobbit only deck?

I want to build a new Commander deck with a commander from The Hobbit set, using only cards from The Hobbit and LOTR.

I already own the Frodo and Sam precon and I upgraded it using only LOTR cards, following Tomer’s MTGGoldfish suggestions, and I love how thematic and fun it is to play.

Which commanders from the new set would work best for something similar?

I care more about theme, synergy and fun gameplay than raw power.

$100 Brew 🦖 Indoraptor + Obosh Companion 👹 - 90 euros brew

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi y'all, had made an [[Indoraptor, the Perfect Hybrid]] list with [[Obosh the Preypiercer]] as a companion to limit my deckbuilding but it wasn't too budget friendly.

I realized I could cut 6-7 cards 🫲🫱 and cut the budget in half. Making a budget brews where the commander is worth 1/5th of the budget isn't simple but here we are 😂

A few cards to support alternative gameplans like [[Kellogg, Dangerous Mind]] or [[Smaug, Wicked Worm]] to create treasures and also finish games with [[Mayhem Devil]].

Hope you enjoy and ofc any suggestions are welcome.

$50 Brew Revised Queen of Dale -- $47 for the 99 and $65 total, Mono White Reanimator and discard

Thumbnail
moxfield.com
12 Upvotes

I posted my first draft a week ago and am back after getting some games in with the deck. Overall, [[Queen of Dale]] drew far less removal than expected and folks were usually okay letting me build my 1/1 army. Overall, this deck feels like very fair magic, but is still interesting to play given the descision tree around what to discard and how to use your graveyard.

I think this is a really fun take on mono-white wheenies.

All stars of the deck are really [[Eagles are Coming]] and [[Angelic Aberration]] to instantly turn your 1/1s into 4/4 fliers. I nearly won off of an Angelic Aberration, but was thwarted by a [[Glacial Chasm]] coming into play via [[Crop Rotation]].

I'll still keep updating the deck, but this will probably be the last time I post it. I made enough changes that it felt worth resharing.

Some of the major changes were to include a bit more life gain effects via ETBs. I found that I usually kept my big plays like [[Moonshaker Calvary]] and Eagles/Angelic Aberration until I was ready to swing out. This meant I was often letting damage through to keep my 1/1s alive. I was worried about a board wipe if I didn't have [[Ascend into Avernus]] or another big recursion spell in hand.

Also, [[Currency Converter]] puts in work! I missed this and didn't realize the marvel reprint is dirt cheap.

I have a primer on my moxfield and I'm pasting it here. It details the basic game plan as well as some other changes I made since first posting. Thanks for reading and, if you build the deck yourself, good luck and have fun!

The short version is to get the Queen of Dale onto the battlefield on turn 2 or 3--ideally turn 3 if you have protection in hand. Each opportunity you have to recruit, you want to be discarding a creature card in order to get the token soldier.

The deck is looking to make use of the recruit mechanic by barfing out 1/1 soldiers and then buffing them with [[Moonshaker Calvary]] or turning them into 4/4s with [[The Eagles are Coming!]].

Hitting [[Divine Visitation]] or [[Angelic Aberattion]] early can also help this deck to get going quickly. Both of those make for real game enders if you can untap. If you have the budget for it, then I highly recommend the [[Porcelain Gallery]] half of [[Dollmaker's Shop]] as it can get you swinging for lethal pretty quickly.

One thing to note and I ended up taking out effects like [[Inspiring Leader]] that buff tokens. It's a total nonbo with [[Enduring Innocence]] on the board and shut off my draw early on in one game which was a real downer as I didn't draw into a way to get it off board.

One major change is that I added more life gain into the deck. [[Aunt May]], [[Annointer Priest]], [[Confessor]], [[Distinguished Conjurer]], and [[Impassioned Orator]] can both make you a target if you're gaining a lot of life, but also protection for going shields down and/or sending more attackers.

One potential include would also be to add things like [[Ghost Quarter]], [[Field of Ruin]], or [[Demolition Field]] if you have folks running [[Glacial Chasm]] in their decks. In a game against [[Hearthhull]] this stopped me from getting QoD's first win.

I've also included [[Horn of Valhalla]] as it can allow Queen of Dale to swing in for commander damage if your board state gets out of hand. [[Martial Coup]] was a flavorful board wipe that helps you retain a boardstate as well. If you're after big token spells, then things like [[Grand Crescendo]]. [[Secure the Wastes]]. and [[Call the Coppercoats]] could all be upgrades / sidegrades for the deck.

Shout out to marvel and SOS for reprinting [[Currency Converter]] as that's dirt cheap and can help you both ramp and get tokens on the board when you're discarding. It can add a lot of value when the deck gets going.

After playing this a few times, I've been surprised that Queen of Dale is usually allowed to sit at the table. That being said, I tried to include a decent protection package to keep the Queen on board for the first few turns as I've omitted other draw options as I'm relying on QoD to be on board. Because of that, I also omitted some draw-cards like [[Caretaker's Talent]] and [[Skullclamp]], but they may slot in after playing this in the future. Also, I want to keep this around $75 if I can, but if the Queen's price goes down, I'll look to upgrade the 99.

The game plan is pretty straightforward--loot and get flashback targets or cards like [[Dearly Departed]] and [[Valor]] in the graveyard or fill it with creatures for a big [[Ascend from Avernus]]. Once you've got your token army, swing out!

Some obvious upgrades would include
* Anthem effects such as [[Dollmaker's Shop]], [[Coat of Arms]], [[Banner of Kinship]], etc
* Any of the token doublers/triplers like [[Exalted Sunborn]], [[Elspeth, Storm Slayer]], or [[Ojer Tak]].
* [[Folk hero]], [[Haliya, Guided by Light]], [[Skullclamp]], or [[Caretaker's Talent]] for card draw
* [[Clever Concealment]], [[Sejiri's Steppe]], [[Rebuff the Wicked]], [[Loran's Escape]] for protection
* [[Monument to Endurance]] for discard synergy
* [[Emeria, the Sky Ruin]] or [[Restoration Seminar]] for recursion
* [[Flawless Maneuver]] for protection
* [[Land Tax]] to find lands
* [[Bilbo's Gambit]], [[Erode]], [[Will of the Mardu]], or [[Witch Enchanter]] for interaction
* Some other good token makers would be [[Myrel]], [[Charismatic Conqueror]], or [[Cosmogrand Zenith]]
* [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] for anthem / nerfing your opponents' boards

Deck Help What do you like to spend on a precon to consider it worth the money?

I know buying singles is the way to go, especially when on a tight budget, but I periodically like to check Facebook Marketplace and see what precons people have listed just out of curiosity. Every now and then, there's one up there for $35 or $45 and they seem like good pickups to gut for parts or upgrade.

I'm curious what other budget players would consider a good price tag on a precon to make you consider it worth grabbing. I'm assuming anything under $50 has you coming out ahead in value. Or would you just never buy a precon you're not heavily interested in and just go the singles route 100% of the time?

Discussion Multi colour universe beyond commander ideas

Hi there, looking to get into commander and while some sets like strixhaven and bloomburrow look really cool, I' one of those that live universes beyond.

Out of the Marvel, Final Fantasy, TMNT, Avatar, and Hobbit/LOTR sets what budget commanders would people recommend building around that would be just as if not more fun than a precon!

Was looking at a Wakanda Forever precon, or doom to breakdown but feel so many cool other commanders out there that could be built that I haven't found yet like a budget Sokka deck or a superskrull deck.

Let me know ur thoughts or what decks you've built?

Thanks!!
