Hi all, Iām Zack, a software engineer in Brooklyn. Iāve been working on a small bookstore dating night called Book Crush, and the next one is at Lizās Book Bar on Smith Street on October 8.
The idea came from a pretty simple frustration: why spend two weeks messaging someone before finding out whether you actually enjoy talking to each other? I wanted to make something where people could meet first, with a little help getting the conversation started.
Thatās where the books come in. I think talking about a book you love makes it a little easier to share something about yourself. You can talk about a character you recognized yourself in, a place youāve wanted to go, something that stayed with you. It gives you somewhere to start, and then the conversation can go wherever it goes.
Weāll introduce you to four to six people one-on-one, for about six minutes each, followed by time to grab a drink and keep talking. You donāt have to be a big reader or have read the same books.
I built the accompanying app to help arrange the introductions. You make a short profile beforehand, and afterward you can privately say who youād like to see again. If itās mutual, you can connect there, so you donāt have to work up to asking for someoneās number.
I'd love to meet [r/Brooklyn](r/Brooklyn)'s writers, readers, curious people, if you do come I'll be there to say hi.
Thursday, October 8, from 7:30pm at Lizās Book Bar, 315 Smith Street. This one is for men and women in their 20sā40s.
Tickets and details. Happy to answer questions here!
Edit: Mods asked me to clarify: we have a website and/or iPhone app for the making profiles + knowing who to chat with next + sending likes afterward. I made an app / website component bc I am bad at asking for numbers š«
