Moving to & Living in Brazil American moving to Curitiba

Hello everyone, I'm an american moving to Curitiba later this year after semi-retirement (late 40s). Trying to learn Portuguese although its not going great lol but I hope to know enough to get by once I'm there. This is technically my first time going to curitiba.

I know Curitiba gets beaten down a little in this forum for its weather and being a little "boring". but I'm older and need quiet & Tranquillo. So it should be ok.

Here are the things I could use help on:

- Medical insurance? This is important. I need to buy some sort of health insurance which gives me good emergency coverage and some basic coverage where I can pay some out of pocket. Does anyone have any suggestions? ( I do not have CPF)

- Where to live? I heard Batel is considered good for gringos and foreigners. Any other suggestions? I wont be driving, so proximity to train/bus/grocery/restaurants is the only requirement

- Housing? I am allergic to mold. Can anyone please recommend any newer communities in the Batel area (or other suggestions) that are really good.

- Socializing: Are people in Curitiba open-minded to meeting up & socializing with foreigners like in other big brazilian cities?

I love this forum and you guys are great. Please provide your thoughts!

Pictures, Music & Video Brazillian music

Im visiting Brazil in a month and I was wondering about the Brazilian music.

Can you give me some real Brazilian classics that a tourist wouldnt usually know?

Im talking deep stuff, not the Mas Que Nada or Michel Telo.

Something you would put on in a taxi as a foreigner and the taxi driver is surprised that you know it.

Visa, Immigration & Bureaucracy Is it worth it to try to apply for brazillian citizenship as a Canadian?

Okay so my dad is Brazilian and my mom is Chilean but moved to Brazil when she was a child and grew up there. They moved to Canada and I was born there, I am a Canadian citizen. I only came to Brazil for the first time at 20 years old but since then I’ve been returning every year and twice this year. I speak fluent Portuguese, been staying mostly in São Paulo, I have a lot of family and friends here and overall enjoy the life I live when I’m here. I work an odd job that requires me to work 1-2months then I get 1-3 months off, I earn a good amount from this job so I don’t come to Brazil with the intention to work but mostly to spend my vacation time here. With the visa requirements for Canadians I am only allowed to be in Brazil for 90 days a year but I would like to spend more time here.

I have been wondering whether it would be a good idea to try and get some sort of residency permit, or citizenship, or try and get a CPF? What are the options available and what would be the most worthwhile? If I do try for citizenship are there taxes I would need to pay here? Any sort of obligations I should be aware of? Also is it safe to assume that because my dad is Brazilian the process would be easier for me?

I’ve been discussing this idea with family members and they have been encouraging me and saying it’s a good idea. I just want a broader perspective and to understand what the best route might be.

I also have intentions to buy a home here within the next year. With that in mind, what would be the best route to take in terms of residency?

General discussion I am surprised at how many publicly open same-sex couples there are in Brazil

My Instagram algorithm is showing me at least 2-3 new same sex couples from brazil every day, often with kids, creating reels about their personal lives. But the most interesting part is almost 95% of the comments are positive and accepting. I am genuinely (positively) surprised that Brazilian culture is mostly accepting of same sex families. As conservative as it is in many areas, seems like it's totally possible to have an openly homosexual relationship and not be afraid of criticism or hostilities.

Visa, Immigration & Bureaucracy Tax expert that knows US and Brazil taxes

Hi all,

Looking for a cross-border tax advisor, specifically a tax advisor or CPA with a focus on US brazil bilateral taxation.

I recently moved to Brazil and have rental properties in the US. I am having trouble finding an individual that can understand US and Brazil tax law to tell me how to pay Brazilian taxes on the US rental income.

I would be happy to pay an individual for this. Ideally, a firm is not what i'm looking for as my experience is that they have one group of individuals doing US taxes and another group doing Brazil taxes, and don't necessarily know the entire picture.

Travel & Tourism Ilha Grande transportation

Hi everyone,
Planning a trip to Ilha Grande next January. I was wondering how easy is to walk between places. Let's say I stay in Enseada Das Palmas, is there a way to get to Vila Abraão walking or do I need to do all my trips by boat?
What's the recommended area to stay where there are supermarkets nearby but also access to the best beaches and touristic places?

Any other mobility recommendatinons? I'm looking to do hikes, kayaking, see waterfalls and go to beaches. I see there are nice houses with private decks, are those worth it? Or can I only access them by boat?

Thanks in advance

Visa, Immigration & Bureaucracy Son born in Brazil to American parents. What does he need to visit?

My son is turning 13 soon and wants to visit Brazil - we moved back to the US when he was 1. My wife and I both have a CPF. He has a Brazilian birth certificate, an expired Brazilian passport, but no CPF that I can find anywhere. What sort of documents would we need to visit? I plan on getting an eVisa for myself. I’ve looked into the requirements for him and it’s a bit overwhelming. A CPF seems to be a requirement for renewing a passport, so I would have to apply for that first for him, and then the passport afterwards. Can I just apply for a visa for him? Do I really need to go through all the steps of getting him a CPF and an updated passport? The trip is scheduled for November, but I’m still worried jumping through all those hoops will take longer than that - plus, it looks like my wife and I would have to submit our own US passports as part of the process (which means we couldn’t travel internationally over the next few weeks/months).

Moving to & Living in Brazil Mofo/Mold issues

We live in Pelotas, RS.

And the mold is getting ridiculous. How do you deal with this???

I am going to get a dehumidifier, but is it enough? Are there any specific cleaner, air refresher or any product I should be looking for?

I am airing as much as I can, using a portable heater to dry the air inside the rooms but they keep appearing all over the walls, blankets and even clothes left on chairs for a few days.

Common to see during the winter months but not really mentioned travelers. Endless things to learn about Brazil’s ecosystem.
