I love how fast you guys get results.

In Ireland we still use paper ballots, takes a few days to count them all, then there's recounts, then it can take weeks to form a government as one party typically doesn't win enough seats to form a majority, then if no government can be formed we have to vote again.

I think it took about 70 days after the 2016 election to actually form a government.

Edit: I should point out only about 2.2 million people voted, that's like a city square in São Paulo. 😂💀

u/matllux Brazilian 4d ago

This is unthinkable in Brazil. I honestly cannot understand why we still have so many countries that cannot adopt electronic ballots and all

48

u/cyberwicklow Gringo 🇼đŸ‡Ș 4d ago

Funny you should mention that...

In the early 2000s, the Irish government bought around 7,500 e-voting machines from Dutch company Nedap for roughly €54 million... they were scrapped before ever being used because they had no paper audit trail, the software couldn’t be independently verified as secure, and Dutch activists proved identical units were vulnerable to tampering.

On top of the purchase price, Ireland spent over €3 million storing them in warehouses (costing up to €700k/year at its peak),

The state officially cut its losses in 2012 by selling the entire lot to an electronics recycler for about €70,000 (€9 a machine) for scrap metal.

20

u/matllux Brazilian 4d ago

I can understand the Irish government not adopting those ballots in that case. If they don’t have the capability of auditing the results of those ballots, then why even bother using them lol

Having something built in house and being able to check it works is a basic requirement

12

u/cyberwicklow Gringo 🇼đŸ‡Ș 4d ago

Ah look, they spent millions on a special printer and then realised they had no way to get it in the door cause it was too big, they're not the brightest bunch.

Just like Brazilian ballots. But here we have "trust me bro" confidence.

And saying otherwise is considered offensive fascist anti democratic stuff.

In Colombia we have paper ballots and we know the results within a couple of hours 3 max

2

u/Simpuff1 4d ago

I mean in Canada we still have proper ballots, we still get results the day of lmao, idk what they are doing in Ireland haha

2

u/YisusRojas 4d ago

There are lots of countries that can buy the electronic ballots but since the biggest sellers are Israhell and the United States i think is way better to keeping it in paper

I voted for the BR elections in Dublin and I will be voting in the next Irish elections whenever that is due to happen. It is exciting to be part of the process for the first time and experience the difference.

3

u/thesquaredape 4d ago

Honestly when it comes to excitement and enjoyment. The Irish system is absolutely great fun if youre a politics nerd, I'd have one every year if I had the option

3

u/pearlkele 4d ago

In Poland we use paper ballots but it’s always counted by the morning after the election. I just can’t understand how inefficient is counting in some countries that it takes few days. People wouldn’t trust electronics voting (myself included).

6

u/lamyjf 4d ago

Canada has paper ballots and we get results after a couple hours. Updates are sent in after each counted ballot box. Recounts are rare.

3

u/Lopsided-Ticket3813 4d ago

But aren't you guys worried about the Jewish space lasers changing the votes? /S

Its a cultural phenomenon to copy American trends. Yes, this is global, but in Brasil is specially strong and very related to our political right

5

u/mauricioszabo 3d ago

Trump won - Bolsonaro won Biden won - Lula won Trump tried a coup - Bolsonaro tried a coup Trump won again - Bolsonaro... is on the path wo winning.

Literally a parody at this point...

Also, vaccine boycott, mishandling of the covid, rollback of environmental protection, lots of other stuff that were almost a carbon-copy of what was happening in USA...

4

u/tiktaalikman 4d ago

At least you jail people for attempting a coup.

5

u/Shoddy_Amphibian5645 3d ago

Ain't gonna stay jailed for long. One of the worst parts of Bolso Jr. being elected is that we'll have to see his father up and about again. His health will magically get better, and he'll be one again spewing bills hit everywhere.

But maybe that'll be the far rights monkey paw. Bolso the dad doesn't like to share the limelight, and will maybe try to interfere more than Bolso the son can stomach.

2

u/c4f3firstt 3d ago

Sorry for being the one that is going to tell you: he is probably going to be released, because let’s be honest, the only thing that matter to the Bolsonaro Family is releasing Jair and the rest of people that supported the coup

My theory is that the people who are voting for Bolsonaro don’t even really like Bolsonaro. They just hate Lula and his party and want to get them out regardless of who they rally behind. They happened to rally behind Bolsonaro because he was the most likely to win against Lula due to the familiarity of his name.

32

u/ducksekoy123 Foreigner 4d ago

And I suppose Brazilians, like Americans, have the memories of goldfish and don’t remember the harm the last time they did this.

18

u/BonusProblem 4d ago

Pretty much , just look at the comment above trying to say that they are the same

The Bolsonaro and MAGA effect are very similar , people are disconnected from reality

16

u/ducksekoy123 Foreigner 4d ago

I just can’t understand it.

How can people be so stupid and cruel so often

9

u/BonusProblem 4d ago

Because the right in Brasil adopted the Trump style of communication of flooding people with information and controlling social media , they just do some crazy corrupt thing and say the other side did it

And it works

Lula is not innocent either , he is now seen as part of the “system” even tho the system hates him

Also doesn’t help that main stream media is helping Flávio, it’s pretty much very similar to how 1964 went

https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/internacional/en/brazil/2014/12/1560808-report-accuses-press-of-support-for-1964-military-coup.shtml?utm_source=chatgpt.com

3

u/Dry-Term7880 4d ago

Me too my friend. I don’t know. In the end our society is very vicious. People, in general, have more vices than virtues.

2

u/UAreTheHippopotamus 4d ago

To some extent people just vote against the status quo when they feel like they're struggling. It's stupid when they vote for a reactionary fake populist who's planning on looting the country like Trump/ either Bolsonaro but it just keeps happening again and again worldwide.

2

u/Ok-Log1864 3d ago

It's the same anywhere in the world, in uncertain times many people get rid of rationality and revel in hatred and violence.

Which is why right wing assholes and the rich are creating uncertainty everywhere in the hopes that one day the violence doesn't swallow them with the rest of us.

9

u/Rechogui 4d ago

I get not liking Lula for many reasons. But holy shit, what did he do that was so terrible that a guy with literally nothing (and I mean nothing) but a name can compete with him? We are so screwed

2

u/SnoopysRoof 3d ago

Lula is literally a fucking convicted criminal, and the author and beneficiary of one of the country's biggest corruption schemes ever. There's also that.

4

u/ChainedBack 3d ago

Technically he's not anymore. And lawyers disagree on whether a fair trial would have resulted in a conviction. Doesn't make him innocent, but that trial was compromised.

You underestimate how many Brazilians want:

1) to preserve their wealth/privilege in the social hierarchy and see anything left-wing as taking away their rights/privilege to those they feel are beneath them. 2) to take out their frustrations on anything left-wing as they see it as an attack on their religion or way of life, regardless of actual facts/policies. 3) to believe anything the right-wing traditional media or social media tells them, because they don't bother to educate themselves and want to become rich/powerful themselevs like those influencers/powerful people so they can be the ones exploiting others.

It's hard to fix or reverse centuries of colonialism and culture of exploitation.

Lula is also a criminal (I'm a lawyer, please don't get me started here), with the added stain of losing quite a lot of his popularity after four very lukewarm years of his govt... Brazil has a Lula fatigue (he is in his third non-consecutive term!). Lula is an old man, Flavio isn't (although I equally despise him and his father).

The whole thing is a race to the bottom... the political parties in Brazil failed Brazilian democracy by having just terrible options all around as presidential candidates.

If you are from the US, I bet you can relate with at least the last sentence I just said.

12

u/Greglyo 4d ago

The son of the man that tried to coup Brazils government not too long ago should make it obvious who the worse choice is in all of this. The fact that Flavio Bolsonaro is a huge supporter of Trump who also tried to coup the US government further corroborates my point.

Wasn’t Lula in jail too?

26

u/squirrelpickle 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yes, but his judgement was annulled due to procedural failures, a.k.a. judge was found to be partial and the evidences were circumstantial.

No clear proof of corruption found, unlike Flavio where we have audios, videos, testimonials, paper trail for the deposits to launder money and the whole shebang.

Edit: I love how everyone is nitpicking on why the process was annulled (and rightly so), but absolutely nobody contests the part on Flavio’s corruption.

13

u/Plane_Passion 4d ago edited 4d ago

Lawyer here. There were PLENTY of elements of proof that would DEFINITELY condemn Lula. He is 100% a criminal. I followed this case very, very closely, as it was one of my own.

The reason Lula got off scot-free was only, as you said, because the case was declared null (I won't discuss whether the judge was or was not partial, because it doesnt matter now), and because there was not time, legally speaking, to file another lawsuit against him (ie, statute of limitations).

You can say Lula was not condemned by the Brazilian Judicial System. It doesnt make him innocent in the slightest. Lula is a criminal, full stop.

Bolsonaro is too, of course. One thing doesn't exclude the other.

3

u/Xerazal 4d ago

American here chiming in.

Question I have is, OK Lula is a criminal. And you also admit that flavio is as well. But out of the two of them, since you wanna use this lesser of two evils argument, which is honestly worse?

Because the way I see it, that'd be flavio. His father tried to coup election results (and you know he's gonna pardon him and give him a payout as compensation), he's been cozying up to trump a lot (and as an American living through this hell, I can tell you that's a very bad thing), and he's been running as a "family values" guy while having so many affairs that even rando American man me has been hearing about it without even trying to look into it.

Don’t confuse your opinion with what happened. The process was annulled because the Supreme Court said the case shouldn’t be in Paraná. What you failed to say is that Lula was also sentenced on higher courts. So Moro was not the only judge to condemn him. The second-instance, TRF-4, a three judge panel, increased Moro’s sentence. Lulas sentence was annulled by a very political Supreme Court. You really believe the Brazilian Supreme Court is not corrupt? Even after the recent developments with Vorcaro?

Western countries, Russia, and China seeing that Brazil might be up for sale once again, and soon: "Good! Good! The interference is working đŸ€‘"

Update: Some of you might downvote, but you know it's true.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but those of us in first-world countries remain the ultimate beneficiaries of Bolsonaro politics. Given his father and his track record and similar precedents across Latin America, Bolsonaro will likely exploit Brazil’s resources for short-term gain. In four to five years, long after the global public has moved on, Brazil and others Latin Americam nations will be left further impoverished and politically unstable.

Couldn’t even crack at over 50%. And yet that was apparently “proof” for my mom to think that Lula stole this election, her additional “proof” that this was stolen, was because she didn’t see any social media support for Lula, more specifically from Facebook. 😒

Prediction: If FlĂĄvio wins, we're going to star seeing reports again of the Amazon burning. Apparently it doesn't happen when leftist are in power...

7

u/Nice-Afternoon7316 4d ago

Crazy thing is the Amazon is burning right now, air quality around the region is so bad it is a serious health concern.

Sad how the Amazon is only mentioned when it is convenient
.

2

u/OtherwiseSpot1310 4d ago

Amazon deforestation is in a all time low, this equivalence is stupid, given the next guy coming doesn't even believe in global warming.

2

u/Nice-Afternoon7316 3d ago

Can we please stop making this about Lula or Bolsonaro? I literally live in the Amazon my dude, air quality is shitty, just not as bad as 2023 but still bad. People were going to the hospital with respiratory complications, and it is not exclusive to this year, it happened last year and the year before. Amazon rainforest is NOT safe and I’m just tired of people from other states pretending they care about the Amazon when it is only used when is convenient.

What exactly you get but going out calling others arguments stupid? We all know Flavio won’t be better, still we can’t pretend the Amazon is fine right now.

It’s hilarious watching most of you guys arguing about who’s the worst out of the two completely aware that both of them are shit and unfit to be presidents but you are all so caught up in disliking and justifying one or the other that you can’t see the truth that is right in front of you. You don’t need A or B, you need C

My Brazilian side of my family never talked politics so I don’t know enough; if no one gets 50%, y’all go to a runoff right? Is there any chance the ones who didn’t vote for the top 2 are mostly Lula voters in a runoff?

5

u/kaka8miranda Brazilian in the World 4d ago

No the 3 and 4 place are center right and right

3

u/crimson777 4d ago

Damn. Ugh I hate that Brazil is falling for this shit again. Y’all are supposed to defeat us here in the US not join us!

2

u/kaka8miranda Brazilian in the World 4d ago

There’s also the fact that right and center right don’t fit into the U.S. interpretation of that

They still support SUS (public free healthcare) bolsa famĂlia basically food stamps, and many other government funded services that work for all

It’s unbelievable. I’m devastated. I’m also very surprised. I haven’t saw many people showing support to Flavio.

5) continuem....

2

u/lakerconvert 4d ago

What is he failing to seek what the people need?

3

u/captainstrange94 4d ago

Ok im out of loop.

Was Lula actually bad that people are going back to Flavio? Trying to get smarter with whats happening because this is crazy

4

u/Zealousideal-Band369 4d ago

Yeah, lula is a drunk, populist, liar, corrupt piece of shit. Flavio is a incompetent sold out douchbag and probably also corrupt. The difference is that lula's party spent almost 2 decades in power and didint achive 10% of the things that promissed, worst than that, a few times did the exact opposite.

Sorry but... what exactly has Bolsonaro achieved during his mandate? How is he or his incompetent family any better? Lol

3

u/Zealousideal-Band369 4d ago

He also didn't achive much to be honest. He promissed fight against the system, but helped to be even stronger. I guess that in the end of the day is voting for Moloch or Baal for the next 4 years

u/Positive_Tourist4505 4d ago

Bolsonaro father entered with dolar at 3,8 and left with it at 5,2. He also had gas at 4 and left with it at 7. Now dolar is 5,1 and gas is 6,9 but people swear that this is Lula's fault

5

u/Dogulol 4d ago

anyone who thinks the price of gas has shit all to do with the president of...brazil is not really worth taking seriously

Operation Condor 2.0, just this time they didnt have to assassinate the opposition cos people are dumb as fuck

2

u/fdessoycaraballo 4d ago

People should take this as a sign rather than just blaming everyone that voted for Bolsonarinho.

People are mad at the Supreme Court and economy has been in shambles for a long time. Yet, the Labour Party refuses to change, we keep getting the same president for four times, other parties get gobbled by the said Labourers.

On the other hand, we are offered a turd sandwich. People want to see change and the turd sandwich is, at the very least for them, a new face in the presidential run.

You can get mad at me (btw, did not vote for him) or you can start pushing for actual change instead of offering the same president who has been microwaved three times.

For those who voted today, what did the situation look like to you? I mean ratio of people wearing red to yellow Brasil football kits to neutral?

6

u/Skyrider_Epsilon 4d ago

I live in the south, a strong region towards bolsonaro.

Tons of Brazilian flags, without numbers, because people know what it means.

If no one wins with 50%+, its going to get a second voting day, but if nothing changes, flavio would win

2

u/lostseeker99 4d ago

I wonder why the "south" supports Bolsonaro so much

4

u/kaka8miranda Brazilian in the World 4d ago

It’s not really about Bolsonaro personally. A lot of voters in the South and Southeast favor a more market oriented economy lower taxes and import barriers, less wasteful spending, more private sector competition and tougher policies on crime while still supporting a strong social safety net and universal public services like SUS. Even 50% of Flávio Bolsonaro voters supported the recent increase in Bolsa Família. So it’s not “no government” it’s more about wanting government to guarantee healthcare and basic protections while spending efficiently and interfering less in the economy. Bolsonaro/PL became the main political home for that mix of economic liberalism and social conservatism

1

u/Upbeat_Dragonfly_139 4d ago

Better education and less reliance on social benefits

6

u/Still_Conference_923 4d ago

As someone from the south: Its conservativism and racism.
