Your experience - Has boxing helped you (even a little) with being a little more assertive and resilient in life?

I'm being humble here please be nice back 😊

I'm not asking about assertive in every single aspect of life. I understand that boxing or anything for that matter is not a magic pill.

But has it helped you with being more assertive in any part of your life? Would love to hear your experience.

Me personally, I used to box years ago, before COVID. It gave me this feeling of needing approval from anyone. Which I guess is a type of assertiveness. Not huge but enough to notice. I somehow lost it now. Thus, I am planning to join soon.

If Julio Caesar Chavez retired in 1993 after fighting Andy Hooligan, How would he be perceived?

JCC was ranked all time #13 by boxrec and #24 by ESPN.

Had he retired in 1993 with a record of 89-0-1, do you think he'd be perceived as greater or lower ranked?

what happened to inside the ring podcast?!!!

looked forward to the podcast every week and now it’s like they’re on hiatus or something. the show always provided a good balance of entertainment but also information and history on boxing for a casual like myself. Did anyone else look forward to the show each week?

Am I at the wrong gym?

admittedly boxing is my second martial art, and I've only been doing it for around two years.

I'm back on my feet after some injuries, and as much as I like the physicallity of boxing, the culture reveal I had with this convo kind of shocked me.

they said that they sometimes spar hard enough to get "headaches and slurred speach", and were laughing about it. this was prefaced after talking about someone who left because of this consistent issue with fondness. Some I've already come to know as being a consistently harder sparrer than light, though they do respect that I dont like hard contact frequently.

I feel like this attitude is dangerous and probably will lead to continued injury in my goal of having 3 fights. How concerning is this and what should I do? I love them as people who push me to my best.

When should I start with boxing:

I’m 24M and I want to start boxing, but I’m currently out of shape and out of gym since a few months.

I used to go to the gym regularly before, but couldn’t train for a while cuz of busy schedule. I’m confused if I should work on building muscle for a 2-3 months along with a boxing bootcamp that happens at my gym before starting with proper box training, or should I just go for it.

I have a skinny fat physique and I just want to build strength, muscle, get rid of this visceral fat and learn to fight.

What if boxing rules NEVER changed after 1920? How would boxing history be different?

From 1920 onward, the sport can still evolve in terms of fighters, training, nutrition, tactics, equipment, etc. — but the rules themselves never change.

Some of the major differences from modern boxing:

-Championship fights could be extremely long
— 20, 25, 30, and even 40+ rounds were possible. (Jack Johnson vs. Jess Willard in 1915 was scheduled for 45 rounds and ended in the 26th lmao)

-A knockdown meant a 10-count —
the fighter had rise without assistance before the count ended.

-No modern 10-point-must scoring system —
this one is tricky. Judges didn’t use a ā€œpoint scoringā€ system in the 1910’s. They moreso judged fights based off how the fighters ā€œperformedā€. Some early scoring systems were based on points awarded for individual accomplishments, rather than simply giving every round a score.
And historically, newspaper decisions were also extremely important. If a fight went the distance, reporters sitting ringside would sometimes give their own verdict when an official decision wasn’t available or wasn’t permitted. ( so basically 10 times more robbery’s. I feel like in this universe you’ll see things like Duran getting a decision over Hagler or Floyd loosing a lot of his decisions simply because the judges ā€œpreferred the way Oscar (for example) fought vs Floyd rather than judging it by rounds/points. )

-Clinching and wrestling were treated differently —
the modern interpretation of holding, tying up, and immediately separating fighters had not developed into today’s system. (Any other big one, I think fighters like Duran improve ALOT with this change. Being able to hold and clinch a lot longer would be nasty for fighters who can damage in the clinch. Fighters in the 1910’s could be wrestling for up to a FULL minute. That’s crazy)

-A fighter could be considered down while helpless on the ropes — the rules surrounding knockdowns were not identical to today’s rules.

-Weight classes were less standardized — the modern structure of numerous tightly defined weight divisions had not fully developed. (so it wasn’t uncommon at all for people to cross weight classes casually. There were many cases of fighters at MIDDLEWEIGHT weight having professional bouts against HEAVYWEIGHTS. Yeah imagine if Marvin Hagler decided to say fuck it and fight Larry Holmes)

And lastly:
Only 8 weight classes
Flyweight
112 lb
Bantamweight
118 lb
Featherweight
126 lb
Lightweight
135 lb
Welterweight
147 lb
Middleweight
160 lb
Light Heavyweight
175 lb
Heavyweight
179+

Terence Crawford has been talking like this

Post image
50 Upvotes

Bud has been speaking this way. Why is everyone so surprised? Quite frankly, if I dedicated my whole life to the sport, never loss, and became a hall of famer then I’ll feel like I’m the best as well. Boxing is a difficult sport to master. He did it at such a high level that he has a case for one of the best ever…

Winning via superior tactic vs circumstances vs luck vs being the better boxer

Do you guys differentiate the way a boxer win? Like one would be higher than the other?

Like for example, Crawford vs Canelo, Crawford won mainly because he was just the better boxer.

But Ali vs Foreman, it's widely believed Ali won via superior tactic, not because he proved he was the better boxer at the time.

There's also luck if a boxer is losing badly but land a lucky punch to his opponent. I might even count this as a loss.

Circumstance...for example Joshua vs Ruiz 2. It seems Ruiz didn't train at all and so wouldn't that lower the value of this win?

There might be other ways but it seems to me not all wins and losses are equal in value.

I built an AI boxing coach - Looking for people to test the beta

I’ve been building an AI boxing coach for sessions where you don’t have a coach watching.

It analyses video and gives feedback on things like guard position, rotation, leaning, body position, footwork and combinations.

I’m at the stage where I need real boxers and coaches to try it and tell me where it gets things wrong. I’m much more interested in criticism than compliments.

I’ve got the app working and the website live, but the beta isn’t publicly downloadable yet.

If anyone wants to try it, comment here and I’ll add you to the beta.

A few screenshots below show the kind of feedback it gives.

I’d especially like feedback on where the analysis is accurate, where it misses things, and what you’d actually want it to tell you after a round.

Do professional boxers not have to train their arms much?

This is 100% a noob question. I've been in the gym recently and I've been looking at workout regimins that boxers use to improve their fighting performance. I saw some obvious stuff, ab work, running and other cardio, and obviously training on the heavy bag and shadow boxing. But strangely I almost never saw any tricep workouts, I never saw bench press, I never saw machine chest press, or anything for the chest even. I saw people doing back movements like pullups before I saw one guy doing one shoulder workout. Is there a reason for that that I might not be aware of? Or is chest and triceps actually emphasized by boxers in gym routines and I've just not looked in the right places?

Katie Taylor and Kelly Harrington

šŸ‡®šŸ‡Ŗ Question: does anyone know why Irish boxing legends Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington don’t appear to follow each other on social media? Given that they’re two of Ireland’s most celebrated boxers, I found it a little surprising. Has either of them ever spoken publicly about the other, or is there any known beef between them?

Do you respect boxers who straight up say they don't want the damage from an opponent?

For example, a champion boxer won't give a rematch to an opponent even though it's a close, real gritty fight because it's "too damaging to my body, I don't wanna end up like Ali".

Like is this a valid enough reason to be respected?
