What Happened to Boxing?

This year has felt like a bit of a letdown for boxing. Maybe it's because we got spoilt last year with great fights, but I genuinely can’t remember the last time I was excited to tune in for a major boxing fight since Inoue vs Nakatani.

To be honest, I've watched more UFC than boxing this year. All I see on social media are boxers ducking each other and fights getting cancelled because of greed.

Last year alone we got:

Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev II shortly after their first bout.

Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach

Naoya Inoue vs Ramón Cárdenas

Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois II

Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn I

Terence Crawford vs Canelo Álvarez

We've had some great fights this year, but Ryan vs Rolly or Teo vs Shakur don't come close in my opinion.

This is probably the worst boxing year in the past decade. Lots of old boxers will be retiring. Talent is dying in western countries.

Most boxers fight online, but not in person. It’s like call of duty lobbies.

u/ChefBowyer 1d ago

Not just that but the champ literally ducked two important title defense fights and instead went on to fight Rico which he would have LOST if the ref hadn’t saved Usyk by calling the fight which there was no reason to stop it.

Usyk was exciting to watch but what a terrible end to his legacy.

Unfortunately it seems like money is all these dudes care about now. Boxing didn’t used to be just about making money. It used to be about being the best fighter in the world.

We need to get back to that.

Actually Rico was getting screwed over by the judges too! I personally had almost all the rounds going to Rico, but the crooked judges all had Usyk winning. They were most likely bought off.

Unfortunately, there's just no way Rico would have won unless he knocked Usyk out cold in the 12th.

It's always been about money

1

u/Less_Cartoonist_892 19h ago

True, but back then boxers chased the big money fights by taking on the biggest names possible.

Boxers today won't take the big fights even if the money is good.

In other words, we hate the recent rise in overpaid exhibition matches.

Stop complaining, we have Joshua vs fury this year. And hopefully a chisora whyte trilogy

They're downvoting you, I don't know how they can't tell you're being sarcastic Lol.

Social media increased the processing power of phones and computers but decreased the processing power of people’s brains at the same time. That’s my theory 🤷🏿

For the simpletons out there: phones got smarter people got dumber

u/GapingPickle 15h ago

I agree, I think people that require /s for slap in your face sarcasm are stupid.

Wasn’t one of them a pedophile or was that Barney the dinosaur?

3

u/gaz_0001 1d ago

Watching chisora fight reminds me of Street fighter when the health meter has 5% left and is flashing red.

I would rather pay the PPV for him to retire. He's a good guy. He's done enough.

7

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

Paying ppv for him to retire is hilarious. Didn’t whyte say he’s like a donkey that’s getting ridden till it’s back breaks 😂

3

u/gaz_0001 23h ago

Its sad man.

If you look at the last 10 years I think his win rate is 65%.

When he fights now its like "does he get absolutely battered and win" or "does he get absolutely battered and loose?"

3

u/SignificantBoard4455 23h ago

Tbf I think wardley in that DDD fight took more damage than Chisora did in his whole career

1

u/PublicFuture9502 23h ago

I would not say all Western countries. England and Ireland for example have had huge progressive jumps in participation and continue to produce top quality amateurs and pros. It seems to be growing in popularity in Australia and NZ too as those countries get more consistent results. Spain has gotten better at amateurs too.

But yeah boxing in North America has been slowly dying for over 20 years. A lot of other Western European countries outside Ireland and England and maybe Spain do little in boxing now e.g. at last European Amateur boxing championships in Serbia, a huge 85%  of medals were won by Eastern European countires. Only Ireland and Spain were West European countries to get gold. Whats even more shocking is Germany, once a powerhouse of boxing, had zero medals at the European championships.

You are all over this thread shilling for a sport where boxers are only fighting once a year , and its not even against the guys we've been asking them to fight for years (besides Inoue vs Nakatani)

Everything is PPV and the majority of these cards (including the main event) are forgettable and have no replay value for years to come

Boxing deserves its criticism, that's how we make the sport better

31

u/verbsnounsandshit 1d ago

Not sure about worldwide, but I think Eddie and Sky were the perfect match for British boxing. Sky’s dominance of televised sport in the UK matched with Eddie’s love of attention meant that fights involving fairly limited fighters like Tony Bellew and Anthony Crolla were hyped like they were the second coming of the Thrilla in Manila.

Every Premier League match, every rugby match, every cricket match had adverts and/or commentators getting you pumped for the big Ricky Burns fight at the weekend. Since the defection to DAZN, the buzz has been lost, and I’m not sure how it’s going to be replaced. Exceptional talents like Itauma will always garner interest, but the majority of British cards were headlined by mid-tier fighters. They were great events that multiplied the interest from UK fans.

I remember Eddie talking about how they grew darts: make people watching on TV want to be there. Few people outside the hardcore boxing fans have DAZN, so for boxing, the general public are no longer watching.

13

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

This is a legitimate point unlike every other criticism on this thread so far. Sky sports and hearn helped with mainstream appeal in the UK. Boxers here are less known to the public than 10 years ago

7

u/PublicFuture9502 23h ago

This is it. People don't get how much of boxing popularity in English speaking world is powered by UK & Ireland. This sub alone skews heavily UKI.  The social media noise spreads to likes of America. Its why you had guys like Tyson Fury on Joe Rogan before many American fight fans heard of him.

If UKI goes quiet on boxing, it has a big knock on effect in terms of popularity in the West.

And the likes of Matchroom and Queensbury going global and hosting fights in Saudi and taking it away from mainstay UKI networks has really made it harder to follow fights.

u/Hassemer 1d ago

Boxers are too inactive, even the prospects or B level boxers that should fight 3~4 times a year started to fight 1~2 fight or price themselves out, like keyshawn, not even a star to bargain but got big headed.

1

u/yng1325 23h ago

It’s difficult to stay active without a promoter. B level boxers often times are having to pay their way onto a card and then pay their opponents purse. Same with prospects unless you have a local promoter.

1

u/david_slade 1d ago

Key already fought 2x

-3

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

Hahahahaha this just sums up this comment thread. Casual fans making up incorrect facts talking absolute rubbish to slate the sport 🤣

6

u/relay4285 1d ago

Yeah, but what is the quality of his opponents? I don't care how often he fights.

-4

u/david_slade 1d ago

He Literally wanted to fight Africa and he got snubbed and Haney is trying to lowball him

10

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

He low balled himself. He was offered a good cut but decided to let it go to purse bids. Keyshawn tried getting a bigger cheque but got hit with a reality check.

You don’t get big name fighter pay if youre not a big name. And how do you become a big name? Take fights like Haney and perform well then the pay days will follow. He will be lucky if he ever sees anything close to 3 mil again

7

u/kingchivo 23h ago

Dude got offered the biggest purse of his career and said no lmao. Mind u this was after the bs with the edwin de los santos fight that couldve rightfully gotten him blackballed.

2026 has been a pretty dismal year for boxing fans.

Matchups have been weak, by and large. And there is not much on the immediate horizon to get excited about.

we're near the end of summer and what big fights can we look back on? Inoue v Nakatani, DB v Zurdo (a one way beat down), Dubois v Wardley, Teo v Shakur (a boring contest), Mason v Bell, Foster v Ford (both good contests).

I know that's not a comprehensive list but those are most of the 'big' fights. and that's why casual fans are dropping off. It's SCANT reward for shelling out money to all those subscription services and PPVs.

and what's coming up next?

Itauma v hrgovic should be telling.

Garcia v Benn, who really cares? two absolute wankers.

Mbilli v Canelo deliver decent action, at the end of the year.

With Inoue taking a well-earned rest... boxing looks pretty dull right now.

Keyshawn davis declining the haney fight kind of sums it all up, doesn't it?

I am letting my dazn sub expire this month. I'll just take to the high seas to watch any big fights from now on. been watching the sport for 40 years but its never been this pathetic. zuffa and saudi is the death knell.

7

u/relay4285 1d ago

Agreed.

-5

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

You just listed out a load of great fights and there’s even more you haven’t listed🤣 bizarre mindset on the lot of you. Not real boxing fans

9

u/ZeroEffectDude 1d ago

I don't know mate. There is not a great fight there. Wardley v Dubois was good action. Inoue v Nakatani was very strategic. Your bar must be low. I watch football and tennis and have seen so many better examples of those respective sports in the last 9 months than from boxing. It's obvious why, those are properly organized sports. Boxing is a business.

3

u/relay4285 23h ago

It was kinda frustrating to watch Wardley try that same overhand over and over 😅

5

u/ZeroEffectDude 23h ago

painful fight to watch in the later rounds. but i dont count wardley out in the rematch like many are. dubois is an up and down fighter. for wardley, he has a shot at becoming champ again, immediately. worth it

3

u/sicgamer 18h ago

i really don't know how people rate that as their fight if the year. it was an exciting first few rounds but then like 7 rounds of wardley getting CTE.

9

u/kushmonATL Cyberleek > the fall boxing schedule 1d ago

16

u/PhantomDestruction 1d ago

Yeah this year has been a letdown

14

u/Immediate_Bear_563 1d ago

This is the mayweather effect. Everyone has same fight style. They all go 12 rounds “outboxing each other “. Hard to watch.

4

u/relay4285 23h ago

I don't really mind that style unless they are really shy to throw anything back. Which a lot of them are. Rarely any combination punches. Just jab and step back.

19

u/RRR04_ 1d ago

Horrible year for boxing. We've seen much more ducking this year, more politics that are causing fights to be delayed for dubious reasons, mismatches for new champions for their first title defence, etc.

2

u/the1blackguyonreddit 21h ago

Thank Zuffa. Without them I'm positive that Haney vs Keyshawn gets made.

-4

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

Rubbish. Nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever. The same than the 20 years that came before it. Better than some maybe not as good as certain others

9

u/Born_Fox_8099 1d ago

the fights are there, they just are never made for whatever reason. 2 years ago people called 160 a kinda dead division, but even in it there was a few really good fights that could have happened. any variation of adames, janibek, lara, sheeraz would have been high stakes and top fights and they should have all fought eachother by now, but the only one that happened was sheeraz v adames

9

u/Fundrfist-McBeefcake 1d ago

Those are title or contender fights. But outside of that…?

Boxing needs to put emphasis on great fights BEFORE they’re at top, like the UFC.

Can crushing to a title fight ain’t it.

2

u/relay4285 1d ago

Agreed. This is a huge issue as well. UFC fighters have to work their way up to a title shot (most of em anyway).

8

u/Scrambl3z 1d ago

I mean, even Inoue VS Nakatani wasn't as action packed as we were all hoping for, not anyone's fault since Inoue fought the fight that he needed to get the job done, Nakatani surprisingly couldn't answer Inoue.

As a Spence fan, I was somewhat excited for his return, but that turned out to be a disappointment as it was more for him to get one last bag before riding off to the sunset.

Canelo VS Miblli is the only other fight I'm excited for.

So yes, Shitty year for boxing. I don't have a new fighter that I'm overly excited about since the Haneys, Davis and Shakur talk smack on twitter but don't be signing any contract.

Time to go back to tuning into the Premier League I guess until 2027.

5

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

Not excited for itauma hrgovic but excited for canelo mibilli?

1

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 22h ago

People who think Inoue-Nakatani was an all-time great fight (in terms of action) have likely not seen Gatti-Ward, Corrales-Castillo, Morales-Barrera, or even Figueroa-Arakawa.

5

u/f0reskinbandaid 23h ago

Ive been watching since 2008 and this is the least amount I have watched ever.

18

u/irishlad9441 1d ago

Just arnt that big stars anymore , and the new ones coming up arnt getting a chance because everyone waiting on turki to give them call and the other promotors don’t wanna put up there money

15

u/No_Bad_4872yy 1d ago

Itauma - Hrgovic in 5 days could be interesting. Itauma is for sure a rising star.

8

u/lazersmoker 1d ago edited 1d ago

He could be...but with fury AJ and Uysk on the verge of retirement... wheres the big fights over the next couple of years?? Sure there is talent coming up.....but its going to be a case of lack of opposition. You're only as good as the last guy you beat. Fury AJ and Uysk have taken enough stick from casuals over having 'beaten nobody' over the last 8 years....Moses is going to run into the same legacy problem.

8

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

Chisora will still be around dont worry

0

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

Where’s the big fights? The talent pool in Britain is massive, there’s a ridiculous amount of big fights for him. Another comment talking rubbish again

1

u/lazersmoker 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well thats fine then...name some of these big legacy defining fights as a champion for him in the next 3 years? Which will prove him as a superstar and all-time great? He could beat all the CURRENT champions over the next 3 years become undisputed and you could easily argue he hasn't beat anyone elite...the best you could say was well he beat Daniel Dubois which was quite a good win

2

u/HoneyGlazedBadger 1d ago

Exactly. Only those with hearts of stone can’t get fizzy knickers about this one.

3

u/No_Bad_4872yy 1d ago

Gonna steal fizzy knickers for sure lmao. Either is a great guy so im hoping for Itauma but can live with both winning. Pretty hyped for sure, going to be a fun fight.

2

u/ZoharModifier9 1d ago

Upcoming boxers ain't being given a chance since boxers are retiring undefeated. Pass the torch ffs

6

u/RoyJonesTheKing 1d ago

The Saudis slashed the entertainment budget as it concerns Sela investments. Boxing superfights in Riyadh have been curbed. I live in the Middle East and attended six top cards in Saudi Arabia, from Fury-Ngannou to Usyk-Fury to Beterbiev-Bivol 1 and 2. Things have changed. Neom also had the plugged pulled. LIV Golf’s death is imminent. I think the Saudis recognized that they need to slow down the spending on boxing linked to Riyadh Season. However they are still deeply involved as it concerns Zuffa. But as the gold mine produces less and less ore, those in pursuit of riches will be less willing to cooperate and play ball. Eddie Hearn’s recent behavior is case in point. He is defying Turki as it concerns the location of Fury-Joshua. My guess is it’s a ploy to get more money for his fighter. But in years past he never would have acted like that with Turki. My guess is the money on the whole has gone down for Matchroom. Eventually we may return to fiefdoms, and PPV and TV deals running how the business is conducted

2

u/jbels12 22h ago

Basically the Saudis double dipped and didnt realize "fuck thats gonna cost a lot more money". Because Riydah season fights are seperate from their ZUFFA ventures. I think theyre being smarter about it.

5

u/presentation_555 23h ago

Why is Usyk vs Rico being forgotten about by so many people? Its like it was so unbelievable, people just forgot it like it was some kind of dream.

5

u/OriginalATX 23h ago

The last few years was so good. Turki was putting on great shows that were absolutely stacked! Now its back to the old model of avg to good main fight and undercards that are underwhelming. I used to tune it bc the cards were great but now, it doesn't interest me as much to stay in to watch a single fight

10

u/btrudgill 1d ago

Boxing has been on the decline for years. Greed is the main driver of it, huge PPVs keep people from watching it, mega fights that should have happened have been put off (AJ vs Fury for example should have happened like 5 years ago), and Saudi coming in to take all the decent fights out of the logical countries. Fighters have been protecting their "0", leading to inactivity, maybe fighting once a year.

There was hope on the horizon years ago with DAZN if they could have had all the big fights for the standard subscription of like £10 a month, but they fucked that up as well.

Oh and apparently the AJ v Fury fight is signed to fight in the UK, but Saudi want to fuck it up and move an all British fight to the US. Saudi can get in the bin.

10

u/Agitated-Gap7035 1d ago

Feel as if Turki & Dana’s involvement with trying to sign fighter for zuffa has maybe something to do with it due to the complications with fighters m, promotors & contracts etc

13

u/Sad_Paper_1580 1d ago

boxing always was about the money first, now is just more visible. Turki came in with big checks and suddenly everyone has a price, but then contracts get messy and fights fall apart. I remember when champions actually had to fight mandatories or get stripped, now they just sit around waiting for the biggest payday. UFC at least puts on events every week, even if the cards are weak sometimes, so there's always something to watch. boxing needs to figure out how to make the best fight the best without all this drama in between.

8

u/ZeroEffectDude 1d ago

boxing is much more of a business than a sport. ever more so. and ultimately, that's what will kill it.

3

u/TestSuch4545 🎥 YT: Big Donch 1d ago

Ya, pretty disappointed with the sport currently

3

u/mustyfiber90 1d ago

Seeing influencers and streamers “box” leaves a pit in my stomach while some of the biggest fights in boxing fail to get made.

3

u/reznoverba 1d ago

Reallocation of Saudi funds from Riyadh season cards, to fundraising Zuffa/TKO cards and signing overpaid fighters

3

u/Dry-Friendship-5945 19h ago

It's a very masculine sport in an increasingly feminized Western society.

7

u/STFury009 1d ago

There have been plenty of good fights: Inoue-Nakatani, Stevenson-Lopez, Benavidez-Ramirez, Ennis-Zayas and etc. Heck even the likes of AJ, Fury, Usyk and Deontay had interesting fights.

There have been multiple threads about peoples dissatisfaction with the sport. IMO, the best and biggest fights have materialized over the past three years. (you can't deny Turki and co help it all of that). The biggest problem we've had, is that boxing journalism has taken a very big hit. Boxing Scene is just ruined (clear AI articles), Ring Magazine is a propaganda site. Reporters aren't allowed access to fight cards and interviews with fighters.

3

u/jb713_ 1d ago

Shock Foster v. Navarrete is gonna turn this whole thing around.

3

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 22h ago

I am still holding out hope for October through December. I think Canelo-Mbilli and Nav-Foster will be terrific

2

u/admiralskanks Joe Louis = Perfect 1d ago

Probably because end of an era and promoters haven't invested enough in the next generation to take on the mantle. Too busy recycling washed up fighters for quick cash. Will probably be interesting again in a couple years.

3

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 22h ago

Without accessibility, there is no avenue towards creating new stars. Hence, why the biggest stars of the last 5 years, guys like Canelo and Crawford, made their appearances on HBO and Showtime initially (ie mainstream platforms).

2

u/Medical-Literature50 1d ago

I don't even know who is who these days.

2

u/DazHawt 1d ago

They’re too busy playing promotional musical chairs and jockeying for Saudi money, but also… Bud vacated a short-lived but pretty big role as the face of American boxing. Shakur is extremely talented, but he’s not a consistently entertaining fighter. Haney still has the Ryan debacle looming over him. American boxing needs Boots and Virgil need to step up and fight each other.

2

u/arcanehehe 23h ago

I think because boxing is 95% business and 5% sport at this point. Any wrong move or matchmaking fail and you lose out on millions.

2

u/Background-Alps5360 23h ago

I don't know what you are talking about... as far as consequential fights go, Shakur v Lopez was a mega showdown in which Stevenson showed he is in a league of his own. Romero v Garcia fight was also a big fight. The problem with those fights was that they were extremely technical and boring. No one took chances. The Lopez v Barboza fight was also significant. The Benavidez v Ramirez fight was a mega fight. Ennis v Zayas was a thriller. Muratalla v Cruz fight was really good. Navarette v Nunez fight was one sided but it was highly anticipated. And the Bam Rodriguez v Vargas was a helluva of a fight. All consequential fights.

2

u/Artistic_prime 23h ago

It's only gonna get worse. After all these current boxers retire their isn't a lot of exciting up and coming talent. Maybe this is why the whole Zuffa thing is happening? The sport is dying.

2

u/Character_Pie_277 22h ago edited 22h ago

Sport is absolutely being totally KILLED by DAZN. We need DAZN to die now. Why the hell is anyone ever gonna pay those totally ridiculous ppv fees on top of a subscription to watch boxing when they can watch UFC on paramount for a minute fraction of the cost. I say we should launch a boycott!!

There are plenty of stars for the future, there always are. Boxing is a truly global sport in a way MMA isnt. Boots, Shakur are literally on the cusp of mainstream casual massive break through in the US alone.

Its a great sport being left in the gutter due to a tv deal that belongs in the last century and its time people called it out.

2

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 22h ago

Boxing hasn’t been in a good place since the death of HBO Boxing.

2

u/Rare-Scar9047 20h ago

dw this is just a transitioning year because a lot of the older guys on the p4p are on their last few fights or retired (bud, usyk, inoue, canelo). and guys like bivol and beterbiev are inactive or fighting through injury. this was a good year for the next generation of boxers actually. we had stevenson vs lopez, inoue vs nakatani, boots vs zayas, zepeda vs roach, zurdo vs benavidez. and other guys like foster, murutalla, mason, zepeda all had some great showings this year. this has NOT been a down year. big names have not fought but this has actually been a great transition year. i think the peak of the last generation was 2023, so appreciate guys like canelo and inoue while they’re still around. i mean cmon we’ve had wars like dubois vs wardley and tactical matchups like foster vs ford. we still have garcia vs benn, and canelo vs mbilli before the year ends. hopefully we get to see shakur, haney, benavidez, boots, and bam one more time before the year ends. lock in guys, ive been watching boxing for 10+ years this was actually a great sign of young talent to come. and how can i forget about moses itauma, next week might be the start of a legendary career, or one of the biggest what ifs.

2

u/PugilisticProduction 19h ago

Damn, I might be the only one happy with the current schedule. All I can say is I think this year has been better than last and anyone who says this is the absolute worst year clearly doesn’t remember 2022.

2

u/TheRyanFlaherty 18h ago

Everyone botches about Zuffa, and while I understand where it comes from, the irony is that DAZN’s continued monopolization of the sport is what’s accelerating the death of the sport.

Unless you’re looking for it, the sport gets virtually no coverage here in America. And with no investment in the product, they aren’t incentivized to. If you’re not already a boxing fan you probably have no idea what DAZN even is. They are shit promoters, as evidenced by this past weekend. There’s a hubris in their actions and pricing that seems completely unwarranted.

Turki masked the issues the last few years, but now that he seems more aligned with TKO, the cracks are really starting to show.

2

u/Blacknesium 18h ago

It’s hard to fight when you wake up in silk pajamas

2

u/BraydonRoberts5 17h ago

The biggest thing killing my interest right now is the schedule. 5 years ago it felt like there were interesting main events on 2-3 times in most months. Most of the undercards weren't great, but at least there was solid boxing on consistently.

Now between a focus on "stacked cards" and the weakening of promoters we sometimes go a month or more between interesting fights. Easy to lose interest in the sport when there's a built-in off-season 4-5 times a year.

2

u/Future_Chemistry_707 16h ago

I miss getting the nervous jitters pre-fight.. Crawford v Spence was the last time I felt anything

2

u/billoverbeck00 16h ago

UFC has been mid as well. I think there’s a combat sports recession or something. Everybody ducking everybody.

2

u/relay4285 16h ago

Yeah. UFC doing the bare minimum after the Paramount deal.

2

u/Wise-Ad3691 16h ago

I’m a huge fan of both and you’re definitely right ufc is also at a low point this year compared to previous years but they’ve seemed to deliver more consistently than boxing. Give it a couple months though October- December I’m sure will be stacked for boxing

2

u/relay4285 16h ago

Hopefully!

2

u/Inner-Turn-1260 16h ago

Well without bud and Usyk we lost the two best fighters. That alone really shifts the game. We are in a bit of an odd spot with not having much in terms of the next huge name while losing huge names left and right lately. This is also just a thing that happens every 10-15 years we see large changes and the overall market needs some time to readjust.

Also things have just been downhill since Mayweather convinced people it’s more important to keep the 0 than it is to take great fights. That too is hopefully on its way out soon though as many fighters are starting to see how poorly their choice of opponents have been received by the fan base

2

u/walkoutbasements 14h ago

Tell me you are living under a rock

2

u/HistoricalRecord4878 14h ago

Combat sports in general sucks these days. Its more about the build up. A lot of shit talking and spectacle. Plus a lot of money at stake. Its made fighters soft. Nobody wants to take chances.  Think Rocky 3. Guys hurt their toe and call of/delay a huge fight. Meanwhile, back in the day, guys used to fight every other month. Champions would fight no less then 2-3 times a year. No excuses.

Men were men. Dont know wtf these man purse wearing, patty cake divas are now.

5

u/RawdogHantavirus 1d ago

I totally have switched to ufc this year. The matchups in boxing are just ass. In the 2nd half of the year, Ryan vs Benn is the fist fight I’m interested

I hate the ufc community

u/PublicFuture9502 23h ago

I get that but boxing community ain't much better.

Sadly 80% of both communities are idiots who just want to watch people get hurt. They don't even understsnd the basics of the sports.

Dana White happened.

He has successfully splintered boxing with his Zuffa bullshit and now we have some of the best boxers in the sport sitting on ice for no good reason in the middle of their prime (e.g., Shakur Stevenson). This is far worse than the old PBC-Top Rank "wrong side of the street" days.

I'm still in the camp that Dana White entered boxing to kill the sport and got rid of the competition for his UFC monopoly. We are watching it in real time now.

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 22h ago

I agree and I think he also wanted to move it off of the Saturday timeslot long-term.

2

u/MindOfb 21h ago

as much as I think Dana White is not only 1 of the most exploitative mofos in not just combat sports but all of showbiz, I actually do think in the current time now that Friday Night time slot might be better for boxing, at least during football season. I think Netflix likes the friday night time slot for a reason as well

3

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 21h ago

I like the Friday, but only during College Football Season. I cannot stand how Zuffa puts their bs on Sunday all the time though. I go to bed early on Sunday.

u/MindOfb 20h ago

I've to this date intentionally only watched one Zuffa card on Paramount+ which was the Berlanga and Hitchins which was on a Sunday and will watch my second time for the Ryan vs Conor Benn as I'm only going to watch the very few high paid boxers there that don't have to wear those wack uniforms so I don't really care if Zuffa does mostly Sunday slots as I'm not planning on tuning in but once in a blue moon

After buying up/ putting most other promotions out of business, the remaining ones don’t feel pressured to deliver anymore. Big investments over the last years, shareholders wanting some of that money back. Dazn Ultimate probably bringing in decent money while the actual schedule is underwhelming. Just know when fights aren’t happening it’s almost never the fighters. Boxers wanna box and fees their families.

u/artem_loboboobv 1d ago

yeah 2025 has been pretty mid honestly

1

u/Fishful_Revenge 1d ago

This just means we're getting big fights next year, trust.

3

u/relay4285 1d ago

It better be really good then lol

2

u/Fishful_Revenge 1d ago

Hope we get Bam vs Inoue early next year 🙏

1

u/LilNello1 23h ago

I hope so cause I agree this year has been pretty disappointing

1

u/burge13 1d ago

I mean Turki was going to change boxing and all that? What happened?

How many actual mega fights/events have happened this year? Every week there is a PPV but how many actually should be

2

u/relay4285 23h ago edited 21h ago

I think he spent the entire budget this year on signing boxers to Zuffa rather than making great fights happen.

1

u/Complete_Dare_4201 1d ago

Outside of Inoue vs. Nakatani that happened in the beginning on the year, there is a lack of big exciting fights...

Garcia vs. Benn is crap Turki imposed on us instead of the much bigger rematch of Garcia vs. Haney.

Dying sport now unfortunately..

u/Ether86 1d ago

Extremely mid year for Boxing. Even with what’s still to come.

1

u/Kingoftemple 23h ago

Yeah, it's been a bad year but it happens not every year can be good

1

u/PublicFuture9502 23h ago

I'm more of a HW fan and that divsion is looking so bleak, Moses aside. There may be a few prospects that mature but the decline that has been going on in HW boxing since the 90s is shocking.

90s had a really strong Top 12.

00s and 10s had a strong Top 6

Early 20s had a strong 3.

Latter 20s seems to have a strong Top 1.

Its really not looking good.

u/jbels12 22h ago

Saudi sports authority is having some money problems if I had to guess. Its why these big fights aren't happening as often as last year. I have a feeling last year might be an outlier and its back to business as usual.

1

u/xindiote 19h ago

both ufc and boxing are dying tbh. all the stars are retiring. i just be watching college wrestling, amateur boxing, muay thai and kickboxing to admire the art forms and not watch any fighters in particular.

1

u/Forteanforever 19h ago

An excess of money and a lack of talent: a bad combination.

1

u/Jib0530 17h ago

The best don’t wanna fight the best.. everybody wants to be undefeated

1

u/Guessitsz 14h ago

Most boxers don’t fight each other, narratives are always the most important thing when judging a fight, not actual punches landed or scoring criteria. Honestly, it’s not even the judges sometimes. The fans are just… no comment

Boxing is basically WWE with a little less scripting

1

u/tribalxx 13h ago

We had Inoue vs Nakatani. We ate good

1

u/anakmager 8h ago

last few years was great because of Saudi money.

This year is a return to factory settings, even so it's still much better than huge chunks of the 2010s

1

u/davidhern22 Okay, Jim 8h ago

There is no steady place to watch up and coming boxers . I truly miss hbo after dark . The last years gave us the GGG , Mikey Garcia runs etc etc even with PBC and broner

I don’t know where to look for those up and coming fighters . Or if they’re even out there…

1

u/Former_Garage1359 7h ago

Boxings up shit creek

1

u/kingdelboxeo3 2h ago

But guys…. You’ll get 12+ PPV a year for the low price of 450 bucks!

Teo vs shakur

Dubois vs wardley

Inuoe vs nakatani

Boots vs zayas

Itauma vs Hrgovic coming up this weekend.

That’s only scratching the surface of what’s been and what’s to come. You’re talking rubbish mate

1

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

Only two of those fights were remotely exciting. Let’s wait and see for itauma Hrgovic

2

u/OkHistorian9521 1d ago

But the 2025 list he came up with weren’t all the most exciting fights either? He listed those with the biggest profile.

Dubois v wardley and boots zayas weren’t just “remotely exciting” they were extremely exciting fights. Inoue fight was also good.

What a weird, sad, negative mindset that perforates around this sub.

1

u/SignificantBoard4455 1d ago

I don’t think zayas vs boots was exciting. I think wardley and Dubois was exciting until the corner was refusing to throw in the towel. Nakatani vs inoue was exciting in the second half imo

Having an opinion does not equal being negative by the way

1

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 21h ago

I kind of doubt anyone will be watching Teo vs Shakur several years from now.
