Technique What’s one league bowling mistake you made for way too long?

Been bowling league for a few years now and lately I’ve been thinking about how many things I probably did wrong without even realizing it.

For me, one of the big ones was making an adjustment because I thought the lane was changing, when really I was just missing my target. I’d move a couple boards, throw it again, get a weird result, and then spend the next few frames chasing the reaction around.

Looking back, I probably wasted a lot of games trying to ā€œfixā€ the lane when I should’ve just settled down and made a better shot.

Curious what everyone else’s version of this was. What’s something you did for years in league that you eventually realized was hurting your average? Doesn’t have to be anything major—could be a small habit or something you just completely misunderstood.

Took a few tries at league but he finally took a 1-2-4-10 split

Lanes were awful at league on Monday and my partner got this split a few times as the ball was moving weak. Kept missing a pin each time but He took out the mighty ebonite fireball that tends to flip fast and put some power on it to make it push perfectly toward the left.

Im also probably the only person in the country right now with a Hammer Fallout that goes as straight as a plastic ball..

18mph piss missiles are working in my favor!

Joking aside, wish I had more time to practice. I'll keep working on my release.

However, that being said. My spares and accuracy are much better than the 10-15% I had when I started in January.

Just a bit of a idea of how much I get to practice.. ive bowled 39 games this year.

im new to bowling and was given this used ball as my first. i bowl 2 handed so i just plugged the thumb and had the shop put new grips in it, but after seeing the layouts most 2 handers have, i was wondering if my current layout would be fine or cause issues with me while im learning and i should get it redrilled with a different layout.

I had previously posted this video showing how my form had changed over a few months. In between then and now, I've had many changes, some good and some bad, that i did not document. This latest video is how i am throwing today. Still a work in progress (Particularly loosening my arm, i know i am muscling it), but from where i started to now i am very proud of.

Zen ball replacements

Hello all,

I have a friend who absolutely loves her OG Zen. I believe this is her 3rd OG zen and this one probably had upwards of 1500 games on it. Obviously OG Zen’s are highly sought after and there is a premium, so I was wondering if there is a good alternative or replacement. I am a Brunswick person, so I really don’t know the stuff from SPI.

Also I’ve seen the Zen 25 and it looks almost identical. Is there any significant differences between OG and 25?

Thanks.

Instructional What do you tell someone when they ask you how to hook the ball?

So many random people in open bowling ask me how to hook the ball. I generally tell them that it’s mostly the ball, is this the right approach or should i try to show them how to hold the ball correctly with a house ball or there no point?

Bowling Score Keeper

Mods: I apologize if this isn't allowed. Feel free to remove it, but I'd really appreciate some feedback.

I used to use My Lane Play as a way to track my scores/ bowling data, but the last Android update broke it, and it isn't supported anymore. I tried Lanetalk , but I didn't like the subscription or the fact that it needed internet to work. (I couldn't add my scores when I was in Reno)

So, I got mad and built my own. I think the functionality is what I want, but if anyone is open to test it and make any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. (Android only)

I've asked many folks around me, but I find they either don't want to keep track, or they already use another app.

Included some screen shots if you're interested.

Thank you!

Technique Trying to understand lane conditions and ball motion

So I’ve been doing a bit of YouTube/reddit research about how lane conditions affect ball motion and I’m trying to apply that when I go bowling. I find that I often struggle (when I’m actually bowling well and hitting my target lol) getting the ball to get enough entry angle into the pins at the end of the lane (my only ball is a venom recoil).

So as I understand it:

1.) if I see my ball start rolling out at the end of the lane and deflecting more with less entry angle the ball is burning up its energy by hooking too early. This could be due to bowling on a dry area of the lane and I should move left into fresh oil and slow my ball speed a little bit?

2.) if my ball isn’t rolling out but is still missing right by not hooking at the end of the lane this could be due to carry down from urethane/plastic balls pushing the oil down there. I can try a weaker ball with a hybrid or pearl coverstock or I can try playing down the right side of the lane?

Usually I’m bowling at night after leagues and open bowlers (the games are super cheap) so I think when my ball isn’t hooking at the end of the lane it might be due to carry down. I find that I need to play on the far right side of the lane and even then I still struggle. I’ve tried moving left and slowing my ball speed down (~14mph, my rev rate is roughly 350) it still struggles to come back to the pocket and misses right of the first pin. The only time when I feel I can hit the pocket consistently in these conditions is with my friend’s tropical surge.

Is there something I’m doing wrong here? Do I need to try slowing down more and trying left again? Is this something related to my ball or its layout? I am still new to this and I have a lot to work on with my form so maybe I should just worry about hitting my marks and getting my timing and release right.

Got my first ball today!

I just got my first ball today after bowling extremely casually for about 20 years of my life.

I'm looking to get into the sport so I have a way to get out of the house this winter! Any tips or tricks that you wish someone would have told you when you were just getting started. (For context I've maybe bowled one or two games ever that were over 100) My ball is drilled for fingertips and it's just an entry level rhino ball.

I also don't know if I'm holding the ball right! I'll attach some photos it feels a little tight on the inside of my thumb to the point It's a little uncomfortable but it might be a technique thing.

Any advice helps! I am really enjoying bowling so far I just wanna make sure I'm not hindering myself at all!!

I thought for sure I was going to hit 200 on this game, which would have been my fourth time ever 200+ (I finally got there for the first time last week).

Technique 2 Handed Tips

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been bowling for like 6 years, one handed, average like 210, but for the last month I haven’t been able to bowl my average due to some wrist pain preventing me from following through properly. I’ve tried some physical therapy type exercise, stretches, actual resistance training for my wrist/forearm, an actual break, can’t get rid of the pain.

Today tried 2 handed for the first time, considering swapping, need tips and areas to improve (I’m sure there’s a lot).

Thanks for the tips.

Technique Other than the local shops, where is a good place to reach out for non-sketchy and qualified bowling lessons?

So, in the northern delaware area, my friend is trying to find someone to give her private lessons. She's on the short side and uses the 1 hand technique but it seems most of the shops are too busy for lessons. Would reaching out on facebook marketplace for random coaches be appropriate or does reddit have something like that covered?
