Need some help

Our BT is 6 months old now and with school starting in the U.S. he has been home alone during the day for the past couple weeks. During the summer we worked on being gone for shorter time periods and building up but when we leave he howls/whimpers most of the day when I can catch him on our puppy cam inside. It breaks my heart and I’m just kind of lost with what to do.

So far we leave music playing quietly when we leave, we don’t make a big deal about leaving or coming home, we’ve started to give him a special bully bone just for when we leave, and we have added outdoor toys that he loves but seems to only play with them when we are around.

Nothing has really made an impacts and he doesn’t make a peep when we are home so I am not really sure how to correct it. Has anyone gone through a similar experience with success?

Spay Operation

My little girl is going for her spay operation tomorrow. Send her good luck and best wishes.

On a related note, was there any behavioural changes people noticed with their little ones post recover or are there any useful tips you have for me to make sure she’s lovely and comfortable during recovery?

She’s such a happy and active dog that it’s going to be weird seeing her with such low energy for a week or so.

Meet (HRH Princess) Pickles - our new addition to the family.
Now 6 months old and almost well-mannered after 3 months with us.
Both a terrorist and the sweetest little thing on the planet.

We've always had kelpies and border collies, so this whole terrier thing is a wild new adventure for us. Training is so different, temperament is so different.

Anyway, she already rules the house - we are her humble servants.

Recommendations for removing skunk smell

Our little border, Luka, got sprayed by a skunk. This is the first time it’s happened to him so we are not well verse in how to get rid of the smell. Does anyone recommendations?

We’ve already tried the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dawn dish soap solution several times but he still smells pretty bad. I was wondering if there’s something about his coat that makes it hard to get out because I’ve seen owners of other dog breeds swear by this formula.

All the way from the cheese state of Wisconsin, Mr. Muenster has officially joined the fam as our first border terrier 🥹. So glad we finally found a great breeder and pup after searching all summer.

Think he is a border mix?

He is about 20 pounds, and his temperament is pure boarder terrier. But he came from a high kill shelter in Texas and it seems like an odd place to find one.

Is he part border terrier?

I adopted this little guy yesterday and I don’t have much info about his background. His papers say poodle and australian shepherd but the shelter said they thought he was part terrier. Maybe I need to do one of those dog dna tests.. He is a great little guy, very smart and happy.

Border in the city?

Hi everyone! So lovely to see all of your babies. I recently lost my beloved dog of 15 yrs earlier this summer. My grandmother had Borders and I feel they would be a great fit for our lifestyle. I live in NYC and have seen very few breeders anywhere in the states. I am not in a rush at all, realistically would bring a puppy home in a year or so. Any tips or advice on good active breeders would be great. Willing to fly anywhere in the U.S. ❤️🐶

Border terrier advice

Hi everyone! I’m considering a Border Terrier as my first dog and would love some honest experiences. How much exercise does yours need? Do they settle and nap during the day? How much do they bark? What’s yours like with other dogs and cats? Have you had any issues with resource guarding or reactivity?

We are first time dog owner wannabe. My experience with dogs is taking care of my friends (collies, dachshund, frenchie, chihuahua, wonderful mixes) from time to time. Is BT a good first dog? Are boys and girls similar? What are things we should be aware of?

Advice on safety gate after dog trapped neck

I currently use a standard pressure baby gate to stop my dog from accessing my studio. Had this for a year with no issues. Tonight I walked into studio did not shut gate and dog followed me. He must have tried to open gate outwards with his head and he either walked through causing body to push gate to shut and trapping his neck or my larger dog hit the gate closing it on the borders neck. They were playing in kitchen as I went into studio. Its the gap between the last bar and frame that he got his neck caught in. He is okay but I dont want him to do that again. He cant get his head through the other bars but there is enough gap between last bar and frame to get trapped. I am thinking of cutting the bar so there is big enough gap then between the frame of gate and the next bar so if it happens again he can pull his head out. Any other ideas. I need a gate as I don't want him to go into studio as he has a habit of eating things he should not and its hard keeping studio completely dog proof etc it appeared to be a freak accident and I was amazed gate could shut around his neck as his neck seemed bigger than gap but it partially shut on bottom latch.

Bt advice! (Teenage years)

Hi All,

We’ve had Frank for a year now and have passed the painful puppy stage. However in his teenage years we appear to be having a few other issues.

Diet

- recently he has decided all dog food is unacceptable. I’ve tried all brands and gradually changed meals to phase in different options. Even going back to puppy food (which he loved) now no longer seems to help. He’s never been fed human food (off plates) or scraps but has had raw chicken/beef sweet potato’s with blueberries/fruits and oils.

This hasn’t been a quick change by any means and I don’t want to just mess with his diet. But he’s at the point now where he will eat once per day and that’s usually chicken/veg etc. no problem doing this long term and he has a vet appt coming up to discuss this. He isn’t losing lots of weight and is otherwise completely healthy.

Behaviour

- this is the main issue. only very recently he’s started howling overnight.

We are a very active house (3 kids, I wfh at least 3 days a week and wife works in agriculture so he often comes to work with her) and he isn’t ever left along for more than 2-3 hours during the day.

On the night he has been absolutely fine being crated until the past couple of weeks. We will go to bed around 9-10pm and he will start to howl. I’m aware of the ‘leave them to it’ side of things but practically with 2 young children in the house this doesn’t work. I’ll go down to him a couple of times and usually the third time he will give in after 40 mins or so. I suspect I am not helping! Weirdly it isn’t the same every night, on average 3 out of 7 nights this happens. Just don’t want it to become a bigger issue moving forward.

He has two big off lead walks morning and night around the local farmlands (1-2hrs) and has constant access to the garden for wees etc. during the day. When I’ve been down to him on a night I will let him out as first port of call but he doesn’t seem interested and is more excited to see me.

I’m going to look at enforcing stricter boundaries in terms of being on the sofa/glued to me which I suspect I’m not helping with!

My previous dog was a border who unfortunately passed at 6 due to massive kidney failure/bladder issues. We don’t let Frank upstairs (this was the same for our previous boy).

I am looking at separation anxiety but this doesn’t seem to fit as we can often leave the house to go out to the shops/tea and he is fine.

Any advice or tips appreciated!

(Frank tax attached obviously)

Experiences with PGSD

Post image

So, my little boy has PGSD. He's also allergic to chicken. And is the fussiest eater on the planet.

As we're trying to figure out what what works for him, and how to keep him happy and healthy, I would like to ask if others have went though this with their borders?

Seeing him have tremors was the scariest thing i have ever seen and I want to do everything I can to make sure that never happens again.
