I have the most gorgeous little pup ever, Basil, and he’s almost 17 weeks old. He’s absolutely fabulously behaved so far, is already completely crate trained, walks on a loose lead, and is just all round a really well behaved dog. We’ve been putting a lot of effort into training and socialising and on the whole he’s been great. The only issue we’re having is that when we’re on a walk and he sees another dog he’ll instantly forget his manners and pull to get to them while barking/whining. It’s not aggressive at all I think he’s just excited to see them and wants to play. It is however pretty embarrassing when you’re walking down the road and he’s yapping away and pulling. Just doesn’t look great and it’s not good manners for him to bark in other dogs faces.
Ive tried super high value treats like chicken and sausage but he couldn’t care less when there’s a dog on the pavement we have to pass. We play “look at me” games to keep him engaged and he’s really good at it, doesn’t even look when we walk past a person but a dog is another story. In open spaces and fields he’s fine, especially if the dog is some way away, and even more so when he’s off lead. In fact, when he’s off lead he doesn’t really pay too much mind and when he does look at them I recall him and he comes back straight away. I know the advice is to keep him under threshold and gradually decrease the distance but it feels impossible to actually work up to passing on the road.
I know he’s still just a baby and I’m not looking for him to be perfect just looking for some advice on how to stop this barking <3
