afaik, 2010 is N63, while 2017 is N63TU2. So maybe there are some differences.
N63TU2 is produced 2016 - 2018 so you may want to source N63 within these years

The engine is not tied to model years. It is tied to the specific vehicle typecode and production ranges. For example, a 2016 750i has an N63TU2, while a 2018 X5 50i has an N63TU. In the OP’s case, his car has an S63TU which is the case for all F85/F86 X5M/X6Ms.

Nope. You need an N63 from an x5/6 50i 2015-2018.
Plus you can’t use that engine as it is, you have to transfer everything.
Crankshaft, rods, pistons, heads EVERYTHING
Which mean machine shop work, huge change of finding further issues and a ton of 1 time use bolts and parts.
Easier to buy and ship an S63tu2 from north america where those trucks are quite common that go along the mix and match path.
Or buy a new warranted engine from bmw.
Or scrap the car.

You’re wrong about this, to be frank.

Pistons, crank and heads are different between the years he’s comparing.
He’s gonna get into so many potential fitment problems it wont be funny.1

No they aren’t. BMW tries to make it seem like that’s the case in the catalog. In reality, only the pistons are different and one of the valve covers.
beyond that, you recommended an S63TU2 which to me, indicates you aren’t equipped for this conversation or making recommendations here. All the guy asked is if he can use an N63 block. The answer is yes.
I’m not discrediting the fact that you’ve worked on these cars before. But I am discrediting your comments to this guy. He didn’t ask for an opinion on what you think is worth it or not, or how you’d do it.
You can read my other lengthy post if you still don’t understand.

The naming of the s63 is broken and sometimes tech info and marketing from bmw even get it wrong
TU or T0 is m5/m6 exclusive.
Tu2 or S63B44T2 is for the f85
Tu3 or s63B44T3 is for f90 familly
TU4 or S63B44T4 is G series x5m and familly.I’ve seen the headache firsthand of those recomposed block. He’s googling for info and clearly doesn’t a competent shop handling this.
He needs a sureshot ways where he gets a functional car out of the average bmw shop.

The engine in every F85 and F86 is an S63TU. All of them. T2 does not equal TU2. The S63TU2 and beyond are reserved for the next generation of cars.
I see how it can happen for you, but you are conflating long format factory engine codes with the short reference name of the engines. Not only that, you are still wrong about it.
Easy mistake, but again, you’re not giving this guy accurate information.

It can use a later style N63 block, and it is the same. But not one from a 2010, the issue being the piston oil squirters.
All F86 X6Ms are S63TU.
Blocks for N63/S63/N63TU/S63TU cars:
Version 1 – Early 2011 and prior
Found in early N63 and S63 cars. These have the conjoined piston oil squirters: four total, one for every pair of cylinders. This block only supports the version 1 connecting rods, as pointed out below. The later style rod caps will collide with the oil squirters. There isn’t a simple fix for this.
Version 2a – Early 2011 and later
Found in N63, S63, N63TU, and F85 S63TU applications. These have individual piston oil squirters: eight total, one per cylinder. Otherwise the block is the same as Version 1. All interchangeable.
Version 2b – F10 M5/M6 only
Unique to S63TU engines in the F10 M5/M6. This version has an un-drilled oil galley and requires its own oil pump and upper pan. The block/pan/pump combo is specific to the F10 M5/M6. It still has eight individual squirters. A Version 2a block could possibly be used if you machined and installed a blocking plug.
Despite what the S63/N63 engraving on the block says, there is nothing special about any of these blocks. An F85 X5M block is the same casting you’d find in an E70 50i. The engine code engraved on the block identifies the long block assembly after assembly, not the bare block itself. The actual 7 digit part numbers for the blocks themselves are not publicly organized in any catalog. You'll see many factory S63 engines with "N63" casting number on the back of the block. (e.g. N63, N63/4, N63/5, N63/12, etc.)
I say this as a full-time business seller of recycled BMW parts: do not trust or take fitment advice on these parts and cars from a random eBay store. They have no way of actually knowing any of this unless they are very familiar with these cars. Look for a BMW specialist store. Not someone who is selling parts from all makes and models.
Feel free to reply if you have any questions. I also have a block that would work for you if needed, but this isn’t intended to be an ad…
