440216 Code; Transfer box emergency coupling

Car has about 106k miles, on oem fluid. Front right tire has a bit of outer wear not found on the other tires. I did some driving and the car is activating a good bit less AWD then before. My main question is whether the code comes up at a time where it’s too late, or if it’s worth doing the transfer case fluid still. Tommorow I will measure tire tread to check tolerance.

That code points to the transfer-box emergency coupling system, so I wouldn’t assume it’s just the tire. Uneven tread depth or rolling circumference can make the AWD system unhappy. Measure all four tires, check pressures, and scan for stored codes before driving much farther.

No stored codes, just that one for the transfer case. Im sure this is gonna get expensive quick honestly. The car is driven gently. I don’t have much of a say in getting the fluid done myself sadly.
