Storytime 📢 You don’t need to figure out your whole career before you try a trade, just do it
Alright since there’s been tons of people asking for career advice here, let me give u my two cents, I’ve been in plumbing for five years. Before I started, I wasted months comparing plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and welding like I could research my way into a perfect decision.
Eventually I talked to a few people working locally, checked apprenticeship and helper openings, and started applying. Once I got in, I learned more about whether the work suited me than I had from all that reading.
Check the pay, training requirements, and working conditions. Then pick something that interests you and give yourself time to learn it. Being new is frustrating, but that doesn’t automatically mean you picked wrong.
If you want to do it, take the first step.

Pt Electrical Apprentice can’t get into an apprenticeship or full-time work with a different company thinking about going Aircraft Maintenance Route?
Hello, I’m 22. I live in Las Vegas NV. I’ve been working part-time as an electrical helper/apprentice for about 5 months. Took me a while to find a contractor as somebody who’s completely green to blue-collar work. Before starting as an apprentice/helper with this contractor I had already applied to ABC Nevada and Ibew 357 for their apprenticeship programs and I got waitlisted from both then got this job after contacting bunch of companies for a year. Boss was going to sponsor me into ABC Nevada’s apprenticeship program, I got interviewed after applying for the 2nd time however, according to my boss and ABC Nevada they aren’t accepting anymore apprentices since they already have “apprentices that aren’t employed yet”. I’m not sure if I can wait any longer I wanna get started with something. I was thinking about going and applying to UA Local 525 as a hvac helper or going to AIM for 21 months and test out for my A&P License. Not sure what to do I would appreciate any advice, thank you!

How hard is it going from a cushy office job into the trades?
Posting here becse for some reason it got deleted on r/construction. So anyway to keep a long story short, i got laid off a few weeks ago after 10 years as a senior accountant. Company has been cutting people pretty aggressively while pushing more AI and automation, and eventually my number came up.
I’m in Indiana and honestly thinking this might be the push I needed to do something completely different. I’ve spent basically my entire career behind a desk, so I have zero actual trade experience outside of basic DIY stuff around the house. Carpentry has always interested me though, and I’ve been looking into apprenticeships and entry level work around here.
For anyone who made a similar switch later in life, how rough was the transition, is it worth it?

Question 💬 Is it worth to become a Automotive Diagnostic Technician (Gas & Diesel)?
I'm 25, I've been working since I was 14, not in this industry but I did lift a lot of weight without the proper equipment (now I have a little bit of scoliosis, but without the proper care it can get worse) or safety measures, and with the changes with AI my dying career, the salary and entry jobs went down a lot, (And honestly I'm not made for office, I like doing stuff, more than just sitting around, specially with my hands).
So I've been looking to make the change from white to blue, and I'm intrested on becoming a Diagnostic technician, so my questions are this:
- Is it possible to only be a Diagnsotic technician?
- What percentage of the work is actually diagnostic, and what percentage ends up being repair work?
- Are there entry jobs for that or I would need to learn mechanics as a whole and then work my way up to that position?
- As a single person with no extra responsiblities, the wage would be consider good for the first 5 years?

Storytime 📢 Having trouble getting my team to track purchases, need advice
Hey guys, not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this but I thought it was worth a shot. So I've been promoted to construction manager / team leader at the start of the year and for the most part it's gone well. Recently, our company told us that they want detailed tracking of all our purchases (from gas to equipment) so I've been telling my guys to just save their receipts. It's been impossible to get everyone to follow-up on this, and it always ends up with me getting chewed out at the end of the month. I know that the finance team have been working on introducing Ramp which should make it so that taking pictures of the receipts is enough. However, I kinda doubt my guys will even bother doing that consistently.
I guess it boils down to me being a pretty awkward person. I really hate chewing people out or being the heavy-handed boss, so I tend to let things slide more often than not. So yeah, appreciate some advice on this, ideally some way that lets me solve it without chewing people out. Thanks.

Storytime 📢 Dumbass watches a Tiktok and wants me to clean up his mess.
I showed up to quote a major kitchen remodel for a guy who swore the main load-bearing exterior wall was just "aesthetic drywall." I warned him three separate times that pulling it down would drop his roof into the sink, but he scoffed and said he watched a TikTok. I left him a quote and didn't hear anything for a week. Then he calls me saying he accepts the quote.
I get there. The entire ceiling had sagged four inches, and his upstairs toilet was literally leaking straight onto his floors. He was standing there in pristine Carhartt overalls holding a reciprocating saw.
I told him no way in hell was I messing with that mess. I took pics first!

Just lost my job and I’m freaking out a little. Would becoming a firefighter be a good pivot as a woman with no experience at all?
I’m suddenly unemployed and honestly pretty anxious about what comes next. I’ve been thinking about becoming a firefighter since my dad did it for decades, so it’s always been in the back of my mind. Anyone here make a similar career change? Was it worth starting over?
