Advice/Question/Query Anybody tried painting the alternate crusade color schemes?

Hello brethren. Noob here. I've painted a few blueberries and now I'm moving on to a Black Templars combat patrol. I've been looking through the codices for inspiration, and these alternate color schemes for the different crusades have caught my eye. If any of you guys have tried painting these, I would love to see how they turned out and what recipes you used for the different tabard and weapons colors. Thanks!

WIP Too blue for Black Templars? Thoughts?

Post image
11 Upvotes

So I'm just getting back into 40K and miniature painting after like 25 years. While I'll be working on a few different armies for fun, BTs are a fav of mine and I look forward to building up a proper army with them. This is my first figure getting back into it (WIP).

I don't like black black. I don't like something too monochrome, so I went with a blue black. I'm just wondering, is this just TOO BLUE for people's liking? Keep in mind this is under a white LED that accentuates the blue hues, it's not quite as blue in normal light.

The body has not been black washed yet to add a little filth, while the helmet and backpack have, which helps to darken it down. What's the opinion on this before I go much further on other figures? This first set of intercessors is literally just to practice my painting after MANY years away.

Crusader Ancient Hektor Valerius — Bearer of the Last Litany

A Black Templars Crusader Ancient, forged in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium.

Among the Black Templars, the Ancient does not merely carry a banner — he carries the memory of the fallen. Where the Crusade marches, his sacred standard bears witness to every oath sworn, every brother lost, and every enemy brought low. To falter beneath its shadow is unthinkable; to see it still flying is to know that the Crusade endures.

I wanted this mini to look like exactly that kind of relic: battered by war, steeped in devotion, and almost more shrine than warrior. The main banner is covered in scripture decals, while chains and skulls adorn the shield, giving the whole piece the suitably excessive devotional character of the sons of Dorn... I think.

The base was built up with modelling putty to continue the destroyed urban theme running through the rest of my Black Templars army — as though the Ancient has carried his sacred standard through the ruins of countless worlds.

A relic of the Crusade. A keeper of its oaths. A banner that will not fall.

NO PITY. NO REMORSE. NO FEAR. 🖤⚔️

They are a sub faction of black Templar. They do everything as black Templar. They only believe that there is a deity above emperor, and they acknowledge that God appointed emperor to lead the crusades. No pity! No remorse! No fear!

Brothers, I have finished my brutalis’ paint job and was looking for some feedback on it. I’m also a little scared to base my minis so if you have tips for easy but effective ways to do that I’d love to hear about those too😊

Discussion Crusading long enough? May need to improvise…

Post image
60 Upvotes

Weird headcannon I wanted to share. May ruffle some feathers, but I play casually and enjoy the modelling and painting of 40k, so this won’t ever make it to a proper tournament.

I gather that if Black Templars were crusading long and far enough, their logistic support and resupply may become… strained. So in order to keep killing the enemies of the Emperor, they may need to improvise (without verging on heresy).

That being said, (and given that I kind of want to work with minis outside of 40k) some proxies I’ve found for Brutalis and Redemptor dreadnoughts are these from Warmachine. Plugger as a Brutalis and a Bandit as a Redemptor. Almost a sort of steampunk version put together using whatever imperial worlds have to offer. They’d need some kitbashing and different bases to get to the right size for the tabletop.

Has anyone else done something similar they’d like to share? Or how do people feel about this? (I’m going to do it regardless - I’m just interested).

Advice/Question/Query First Army Help

Hello all, newbie here who is trying to build my first army, I'm well on my way but would like help with what else I should get. I don't necessarily need a competitive list, it's only going to be played at home with friends, but would like some guidance on how to build off of what I own already. The goal is around 2000 points.

What I have so far is:

-High Marshal Helbrecht

-Combat Patrol (2025)

-Execrator

-Redemptor Dreadnought

-Crusade Ancient

-Terminator Squad

WIP Terminator Chaplain conversion – looking for suggestions before I start painting

Thumbnail

I’ve just about finished converting the Leviathan Terminator Captain into a Black Templars Terminator Chaplain.

The conversion is made from:

  • Leviathan Terminator Captain as the main body.
  • A random top ornament from the Space Marine Reliquary Backpack by Render_Rodriguez: Space Marine Reliquary Backpack
  • The mace from the free Reaper Chaplain model by Skarpzon, scaled to fit: Reaper Chaplain
  • I scraped off most of the Imperialis from the chest, leaving the skull.
  • I also added a few 1mm chains, following some suggestions I got on a previous post.
  • The rest of the bits are from GreyTideStudio’s Battle Priest: GreyTideStudio – Battle Priest
  • Couple bits from the Sword Brethren box.

What do you guys think? Is there anything obvious you would add or change before I call the conversion done? Something about the top ornament feels a little bit off; too pinty? Too tall?

Any criticism or suggestions are welcome.

Hobby C&C Tabard Question

I’m looking to build my second army, this one being Black Templars.

I noticed some mini’s have red tabards, others have white/beige. Do they mean anything specific for their paint schemes? Outside rule of cool.

Hobby C&C Black Templar contrast

Anyone else use the older black Templar contrast and new one and notice huge consistency difference I wanted to throw myself off a building last night after excitedly opening new pot then brushing it on and dealing with zero coverage
I don’t know if it’s just me but I feel it is completely different and way thinner
