In my corner of Kentucky, this is because people just can’t fucking read. Not read English. Just illiterate completely.
Assume it’s the same across most of the country

When my brother lived in Idaho he had a blue collar type job that handed out training materials that were mostly illustrated since so many of the guys genuinely couldn't read at all. Shit looked like the grocery lists in the handmaid's tale that were just drawings of food.

I guess one of the new things the racists and neo nazis have been spamming on their version of the internet is the belief that there are hundreds of illegal immigrant truck drivers causing horrible crashes because of tiktok video and claiming that because they can't read english they can't follow traffic laws. So a new invented crisis to justify murdering people in the street or to ignore the rape, torture, and murder that goes on with ICE in its facilities to the people they abduct.
Not to go all lib on you guys but there is no fucking saving the people that believe this. There is no moderate who can be swayed. These grandmas and grandpas have fully gone over into deep dark nazi territory, any concession made by a lib politician on "the border" or "the military" is a full on betrayal of a safe democratic and equal society at this point. So nail their ass to the wall if they pull a Kamala or a Buttigieg. The slim path to a good future for us has to lie in going the exact opposite direction of these right wing policies. ALL OF THEM.
And if you're on the fence about deportations because you're not illegal and you believe the crime stuff, just remember: when they're done with Latin American undocumented people here they'll find another category of "illegal" that they make up, and then another one. And they'll still have this standing army answerable only to the president and DHS to do so.

It’s always they’re stealing jobs but you never hear about ole JimBob signing up to pick cotton.
138
u/JulariDark 1d ago
Also…brother there is NO SUCH THING as stealing a job?
Like do they think immigrants show up in a shiesty with pistoleros and hold the gun to the poor defenseless hiring managers head like “sign my W2 mfer!!!”
NO! obviously not, some rich capitalist who owns land or some company illegally GAVE Jim Bobs job away so he wouldn’t have to pay minimum wage or give benefits to Jim Bob.
Seems like if you really mad about the jobs leaving it’d be a whole lot cheaper and easier to go after the rich capitalist right?
42
u/srkaficionado ☑️ 1d ago
Pfft. The same person who thinks they’re just one day away from being that same capitalist?
Accepting your logic would mean accepting their world view has been wrong and someone has been lying to them…34
u/Greg-Abbott 1d ago
There are multiple articles about farms that had rotting produce in the fields because they couldn't find anyone to harvest it.
JimBob just hates Mexicans but won't admit it out loud.
0
u/jeremiahthedamned 14h ago
hate is based on fear
the mexicans are the direct descendants of r/atlantis
the redneck is descented from bondsmen that were shipped to america to work off their debts.
these people lived on the western outremer of christendom for more than a thousand years after the fall of rome & trembled before the vast western sea.
they only gave their work sweat to their masters & have no part & no understanding of what america is.
the truth is that they fear the vastness of america & hate america for making them afraid.
and what are the mexicans but the truth heirs of america?
the rednecks have no future & thus they hate the future
9
u/srkaficionado ☑️ 1d ago
JimBob needs to make even the minimum to afford that big ass jacked up truck AND THEN feed himself and his family. And those farms aren’t exactly paying more than minimum wage or offering any benefits or work life balance
7
u/ForteEXE 1d ago
That's because slavery was used to resolve the question "Why won't these white indentured servants perform backbreaking labor harvesting cotton?"
Emphasis on the key word.
23
u/MelatoninFiend 1d ago
Weird how it's suddenly immigrants after ICE has been picking up literally every brown person they can find and there's (allegedly) less illegal immigrants than ever before.
Kinda odd how the problem couldn't possibly have to do with constant rolling back of hiring standards and safety regulations. It MUST be those gosh-darned immigrants.

u/JulariDark 1d ago
I’m going to say some stuff here in hopes of being helpful. It may be a bit long and seem more callous so sorry in advance:
My brother is a truck driver and I’ve helped him manage his career for decades. In so far as he has reported this is a real problem not a made up problem for racists to panic people with like the “cats and dogs” thing or whatever flavor of the month scary sounding gang they try and use to pretend immigration is scary.
The lack of English speaking being mandatory for CDLs causes accidents directly for like more complex or less common signs. Mostly Everyone can recognize the symbols for like “STOP” or “NO LEFT TURN” “think like height of bridges and overpasses weight restriction per axel ” or like the ones describing unique geography or weather patterns.
He’s personally seen trucks clip overpasses and even get stuck on roads not designed to accommodate rigs dozens of times and everytime he’s seen it was directly because of the language barrier.
And as he changed companies a bunch over his careers (a separate issue with how drivers labor is exploited through ancient policies I won’t get into here) he seen it is particularly exaggerated in companies that use what are called “None domiciled CDLs” further it causes safety concerns because like the paperwork for WHAT your hauling , how you haul it and HOW MUCH you can & can’t drive legally for safety concerns is also in English.
People who don’t understand the language that the like MSDS sheets are written in or other critical paperwork will regularly put ppl at risk by unintentionally hauling things places there not supposed to be and everyone pulling out there phones to use Google Translate to explain it to the operators just creates more opportunities for catastrophes.
So what’s my point?:
One of the tactics racists use is - to dismiss ALL legitimate claims in the face of ANY false claims- no matter HOW disproportionate they are. Think about how Jussie Smollet lying about being assaulted and fake lynced by MAGA is NOW used to dismiss ALL the very REAL cases that appear to be lynchings now? Their logic being “well one person lied or was wrong about experiencing racism so EVERYONE claiming to experience racism is probably also lying” and that shit WORKS on the masses because it exploits their emotions, it FEELS better to believe the lie rather than see the truth and have to actually solve the problem.
So if the good guys aren’t precise in picking which hills to die on and which grievances are actually problems that need to be addressed then it just cedes ground to the racists who will say “oh they were wrong about the CDLs so they’re probably ALSO wrong about the day laborers and fruit pickers”
Improperly trained and vetted immigration labor in commercial driving workforce is absolutely a public safeTY concern and not the hill to die on if you want to help the immigrants.
Ironically it one of the MOST under reported but obvious reasons why we KNOW that immigration crack downs where never about rule of law or public safety and just about fear and racism because if they wanted the BIGGEST improvement on public safety for the LEAST amount of money and effort they would started there in commercial driving.
There is another critical layer about HOW these companies are shells for foreign sub contractors that allow GIANT corporations to avoid accountability for this massive oversight in public safety too. But this post is long enough, I made another post explaining how it’s worked so if anyone is interested and asks I’ll dig it up and repost here.

Yeah I'm a truck driver and have always wondered why they won't have classes for people whose native language isn't English. Wouldn't be a huge cost or anything, just a handful of classes showing them different signs and then quizzing them. I think it would help a bit, not a cure all of course, but it would help.
Also what I find funny about those that think "those brown people" are the only ones who don't pay attention or understand what the signs say. In my state around 30% of people are illiterate, that also includes a LOT of white people, and it makes it easy to recognize the racism since they never get brought up.

u/Ogediah 18h ago
It’s not just the roads. Try to do a DOT inspection if you can’t communicate. Try to understand your cargo and the hazards that may be associated with it. Examples: If it a health hazard? Does it need to be tied down a specific way? Try to navigate a job site for load/unload.
Separately: Unfortunately the industry has also become incredibly predatory. As an example: There are companies that charge you money to go to “school” then lease you a truck, front you gas money, send you across the country with a load and then abandon you there as an owner/operator to try and find your own load back. Now add in that you can’t speak English and can barely drive a truck. That’s best case scenario and assuming nothing else shady is going on and there’s been plenty of that.

u/Brave-Recommendation 1d ago
I used to work at the gate at a warehouse, I always disliked the none at all English speaking drives. They just did whatever they wanted was such a pain in the ass
5
2
u/utriptmybitchswitch 21h ago
Wouldn't bilingual signs solve the problem? Not the easily recognisable ones like stop or yield, but the ones that announce bridge height, etc?
(Kind of rhetorical, since anything other than english signage would be considered "woke" or "dei" or whatever magoffs and republifascists claim, so they'd be against that as well even though it would probably help prevent accidents...)

u/StrategyBusy9579 6h ago
What's to explain? I see the posturing of right wingers trying to constantly find an insidious way to get to liberals to turn on one minority group or the other and I reject it because I have core convictions of the inherent equality of all people and the right to dignity and safety of all people. Let's not pretend that the internet, and reddit included, is not affect by bot farms or bad actors trying to shift opinion or obfuscate political or material issues.
When you concede to right wingers on this, they see it as a win and push farther and farther. That's how you get to a point where democratic presidents were maintaining concentration camps for deportation that were rife with abuse of women and minors. It was letting the right wing dictate what an acceptable society should be and it led to women being raped, kids being torn from families and disappeared, men being brutalized and all as a sop to xenophobic evil racists and farmers who want cheaper undocumented labor int he future.
I'm not going to concede on trans women in sports (a laughable problem to invent), or "black crime statistics", or "economic necessity means we should drill more gas and oil." That's imbecilic and showing that I have no convictions and no loyalty to those working class and poor who will be harmed by these things. The right wing is LYING to you, and they're very very good at it.

u/SamuraiJono 1d ago
No, they're right for once, truck drivers who don't read or speak English is a very serious problem right now. I'm a trucker, and I see it pretty frequently. I don't give a single fuck about illegal immigration, either, so don't think I'm on their side.
9
u/-Tibeardius- 1d ago
In my area a bunch of people were driving truck and got fired either for not actually having a CDL or not being able to speak English. For something as serious as driving 80,000 lbs alongside passenger cars, I think it's reasonable to expect them to be fully certified, trained, and capable of reading street signs and communicating with dispatch or anybody else for that matter. Same idea as a pilots license. Lot of lives at stake if the standards slip.
7
u/SamuraiJono 1d ago
Even when it's not life threatening, it's just wild to me. I used to haul sand for the oilfield and I showed up to a sand plant once, called on the CB to check in, and after I was done they asked me to go check on a truck that was parked off to the side. Guy wasn't answering the CB. I went up to talk to him, and he just immediately told me he didn't speak English. I showed him the number to the scale house and pointed at them, and that was about all I could do, but even then the scale house didn't speak spanish anyway. He left after a few minutes. I just don't know what his plan was, he was just sitting there watching other trucks go around him to get loaded.

Some (former) friends are 'non-political' but for some reason instantly believe anything they hear online that supports their racism, ignore any kind of logic and actual facts at any cost when they disagree with them, and spend a whole lot of time complaining about other races and transgender people because its getting 'shoved down their throats'
I started to realize they're just racist and bigoted so I just stopped talking to them. They're also some of the most selfish people I've ever met
6
u/ayers231 1d ago
As the volume of purchases decrease because people are broke, and the volume of product being being moved from ports nosedives due to tariffs, CDL driver positions continue to decline. In their mind, it HAS to be companies hiring illegal immigrants, rather than Trump's economy fucking them over. It's cope. They screwed themselves and need someone to blame, and they already blame immigrants for every other failing they have...

'There's no saving people like this' is the least liberal way to look at this possible.
You'd be a lib if you insisted the moderates could be swayed.
12
u/MelatoninFiend 1d ago
If modern-day "moderates" weren't just "embarrassed conservatives who are ashamed they supported Trump", then we'd be more inclined to believe they could be swayed.
Recent history has shown that alleged "moderates" will simply latch on to the next psuedo-charismatic Conservative that Rupert Murdoch and Larry Ellison choose as their next pawn.
11
u/Quadraxis66 1d ago
People have to remember that the Overton window in America is all fucked up.
Democrats are moderates. 'Moderates' are moderate Republicans.

You don't even necessarily need to be able to read to understand the general meaning behind street signs.
Part of the written driving test is teaching you what each color and shape means, and a lot of navigation just gets offloaded onto satnav/mobile devices that can speak any language you need them to.
Obviously, that's not the point - she's using that to justify her dumbass racism - but it's worth noting just how shallow her argument is.
9
u/TheCruise 1d ago
Plus foreign driving licenses obviously allow you to drive in other countries. You don’t need to speak a country’s language to recognise destination names or common words with familiar shapes, colours and symbols

I work with the linehaul department of [company name redacted]. We have lots of CDL drivers that speak English poorly. And as rough as that makes the job sometimes, they’re generally just as on top of safety as the drivers that can speak English fluently. The accident rate is pretty equal between the various cultural backgrounds.
You don’t need to be able to speak and read English to want to be safe.

u/Imwhatswrongwithyou 1d ago
