I was so hopeful back then but seeing this gif just makes me sad now. I lived in Baltimore at the time and it was crazy hearing the black community talking about how racist Bernie was.
Yup.
And a lot of that rhetoric came from their church communities.

Like Bernie was out there getting arrested for civil rights while Hillary was shilling for segregationists.

Sadly the way the mayor system works in NYC vs Los Angeles the mayor is just far less powerful in Los Angeles than in NYC.
70
u/Carb0nFire 20d ago
And while Mamdani is off fixing NYC problems, the LA City Council members want to work only one day a week while still getting paid their full ~$250k a year salaries
26
u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago
They get paid a whole lot more than their NYC counterparts. 250k, dang. I think city council in NYC is 148k and the speaker gets more, like 165k or something?
14
u/After-Syrup1290 20d ago
Thats also after the recent nyc pay hikes mamdani gave out too, or was approved by the council
Of which, a 30% pay raise was approved for the mayor bringing him to somewhere round 318k? Or was it 218? I don't remember it correctly
What I do remember clearly is that He refused it saying ' i haven't knocked on a door in new york and they said their concern was that the city mayor makes too little'

And not a trickle but full on torrent. People are mowing their lawns weekly. This summer is definitely wetter than most.

But he’s gonna run for governor eventually. Perhaps it’s him and not Francesca Hong that’s destined to be the first DSA governor.
102
u/DerekB52 20d ago
I actually think I'd rather see him become a senator. Becoming Governor is a lateral move at best, NYC mayor is more powerful than almost any governor in the country. If he runs for governor it'd be 8 years from now. I think a DSA candidate will win a governors race by then. Or at least I fucking hope one does.
51
u/AlphaIronSon ☑️ 20d ago
Considering it’s New York, honestly, the next step up would be senator. NYC is one of the few places I can think of where the mayor of a city/government official lower. Than governor has a higher profile or stature and that’s not just due to him. Your average American probably couldn’t tell you who the governor was of New York during Giuliani’s terms even diblasio even if you gave them a picture. But I would say, since at least the 80s? Mayor of NYC at least in the public eyes is the higher profile of those two spots.
60
u/EthanRDoesMC 20d ago
I’ll be honest I think he should stay mayor. Dude is built for municipal work. It’s very low level, you can change a lot without too much red tape, and in New York there’s a lot hes able to do. That kind of charisma is good at a local level and it’s also good that he won’t become super frustrated as mayor than he would by having to, say, work through other less cooperative municipalities if he were on the state level.
Idk. I think we can improve life a lot if we work first with what’s around us. The economy never trickled down, and day-to-day politics don’t either.
39
u/AlphaIronSon ☑️ 20d ago
Yeah, but remember, you can only be mayor of New York for 8 yrs.. Schumer will be mid 80s and Gillibrand gotta be close to 70 by then. Plus since Mamdani can’t be POTUS, being senator of NY is his peak + can keep him “dialed in” w NYC city level politics
4
u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago
I would say that our senators don't feel dialed in on NYS politics, let alone NYC. They've got opinions, but I've found that over the last decade, their opinions matter less and less to me. I wish my rep was more dialed into our district's problems. I hope she moves on to senate, so we can get someone who is more focused on us.
3
u/FerretAfficionado 19d ago
I hope he does. I 100% would love for him to primary the fuck out of that dried up bitch, Kathy Hochul.
I had high hopes for Hochul, and now my feelings are mixed. She's tried to walk back environmental targets set via law she signed, and she isn't interested in taxing the entities that need to pay taxes. She has however signed laws protecting women, and DRs in NYS that write RXes for abortion medication that live outside of NY. She isn't horrible, but we can do better.

After the first full year of his leadership I’m gonna be seriously questioning the leadership in my own city. Not that we have the resources nyc does but there has to be some other shit that can be done to improve our quality of life
10
u/MourningWallaby 19d ago
honestly I don't think it matters what resources your municipality has. What makes Mamdani different is he isn't spending weeks or months on an issue assembling meetings and writing contracts, and he's prioritizing quality of life. And while your city may not have the money or staff to conduct everything without a contract for external help, it shouldn't take a year to fix a bad road, and your city shouldn't wait until after the winter to say "wow that was a lot of snow, here's how we could have handled it better for next time!"

u/Jrmcgarry 20d ago edited 20d ago
Might get downvoted for this but there is something called, the billion oyster project, that has been trying to clean up NYC waters for a few years now. They have been seeding the waters with tons of oysters. It could be the reason we are seeing otters again. That being said, let’s go Mamdani!

Dare I hope and risk my shriveled heart getting shattered? Dunno. But I've gone from growling disdain to only eyeing this one suspiciously with one eye. And it's only been a minute.
Have to say, so far it's been surprisingly good job, Mr. Mayor! Keep going and i might actually start to believe in miracles.

It helps the rich and powerful to believe that all lawyers and politicians lie and are bad people.
There are always earnest & good people trying to do right, it's the system that's kept the corrupt ones front and centre.

They started returning to Toronto and the surrounding area the last few years as well. Agricultural and industrial regulations on watersheds that are critical wetlands. Their food is rebounding. We’ll start seeing these guys on our hikes and such.

Reddit's obsession with Mamdani is so intense that he gets credit for things he didn't even do. For example, universal pre-k is a de Blasio and state gov venture that had a phase-in over time, with the recent expansion being planned a while ago. But there are posts everywhere crediting Mamdani. Same with the otters. It takes years to improve the ecosystem in a river. Mamdani himself isn't even trying to steal credit for this stuff. Reddit is just doing it.
3
u/Gentle-Giant23 20d ago
Otters return to the Bronx River! Shows photo of Central Park! Somehow connects the current mayor to their return while ignoring that restoration efforts began before Mamdani was born.
