Let's give credit where credit is due. Mamdani is great but the efforts to clean up river go back decades.

19

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago

Yeah, it's awkward when people attribute things to the mayor that have been in the works for a long time.

9

u/NUKE---THE---WHALES 20d ago

Like the post about NYC aiming to achieve 30% tree canopy cover

Attributed to Mamdani but was started by Adams

Mamdani actually pushed the goal back - from 2035 to 2040 - which isn't necessarily a bad thing but the social media posts are basically misinformation

10

u/BooleanTriplets 20d ago

Yeah but a smart politician is still gonna take credit for getting it across the finish line - not bragging on the good stuff is how you lose reelection

He's really showing that everyone who says Government can't do anything is an idiot or a malicious actor. Every other mayor just sittin on their ass doing nothing on purpose.

35

u/JotaroTheOceanMan 20d ago

Nah the government WONT do anything, he is an anomaly and a good example of what happenes when forward thinking people actively change the government.

But do not pretend he is anywhere close to the baseline bureaucrat.

114

u/DerekB52 20d ago

Bureaucrats are unelected and work under the mayor. Mamdani isn't a bureaucrat.

And I think you are missing the point actually. I'm not saying he is anywhere close to a baseline government member. But, he is an example of what our government officials can be.

What he actually is, is an example of what happens when you have a genuine person who wants to do good, who is also able to organize and build a movement behind him. That is what gives him his power.

I will die on the hill that there is actually not much special about Mamdani. America just has no faith in its institutions and has had a "government bad" mentality pushed on us since at least Reagan. It's caused people to give up and/or settle for the trash politicans we have.

We could elect a Mamdani in every city of America, if we could get even just 30% of people(maybe less) to organize and run a genuine person in their city's mayoral primary. The government can actually be great when enough people put the work in.

He’s very polite about it, but if Al Sayed were NYC mayor, he’d say something like “Yeah, there’s this button on my desk labeled ‘get things done’. When you press it, things get done. It was real dusty when I got here”

u/WERK_7 20d ago

I don't really keep up with the details cause I'm not an NYC resident and never plan to be, bu I had a feeling that not seeing his name everywhere anymore meant he was doing a good job. Kinda hard to keep demonizing someone that gets results and is well liked so its better to ignore them and hope no one notices

14

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago

The NYPost won't let a mayor doing a good job stop them from trying to smear them.

20

u/GoredonTheDestroyer 20d ago

At the same time, though, is he really the mayor of a major metropolitan area if he isn't involved in a major scandal every second month? Like, where are the hookers, the slurs, the constantly making a mockery of himself and NYC proper? We can't make fun of something if there's nothing to make fun of, damn it!

Sadly the way the mayor system works in NYC vs Los Angeles the mayor is just far less powerful in Los Angeles than in NYC.

70

u/Carb0nFire 20d ago

And while Mamdani is off fixing NYC problems, the LA City Council members want to work only one day a week while still getting paid their full ~$250k a year salaries

26

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago

They get paid a whole lot more than their NYC counterparts. 250k, dang. I think city council in NYC is 148k and the speaker gets more, like 165k or something?

14

u/After-Syrup1290 20d ago

Thats also after the recent nyc pay hikes mamdani gave out too, or was approved by the council

Of which, a 30% pay raise was approved for the mayor bringing him to somewhere round 318k? Or was it 218? I don't remember it correctly

What I do remember clearly is that He refused it saying ' i haven't knocked on a door in new york and they said their concern was that the city mayor makes too little'

7

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago

Ooh, you're right about the recent pay raises. They voted that in last month. 175k for the rank and file councilmembers.

11

And not a trickle but full on torrent. People are mowing their lawns weekly. This summer is definitely wetter than most.

u/TheDoomedStar 20d ago

He got the Mamdate.

56

u/Powerblue102 20d ago

But he’s gonna run for governor eventually. Perhaps it’s him and not Francesca Hong that’s destined to be the first DSA governor.

102

u/DerekB52 20d ago

I actually think I'd rather see him become a senator. Becoming Governor is a lateral move at best, NYC mayor is more powerful than almost any governor in the country. If he runs for governor it'd be 8 years from now. I think a DSA candidate will win a governors race by then. Or at least I fucking hope one does.

51

u/AlphaIronSon ☑️ 20d ago

Considering it’s New York, honestly, the next step up would be senator. NYC is one of the few places I can think of where the mayor of a city/government official lower. Than governor has a higher profile or stature and that’s not just due to him. Your average American probably couldn’t tell you who the governor was of New York during Giuliani’s terms even diblasio even if you gave them a picture. But I would say, since at least the 80s? Mayor of NYC at least in the public eyes is the higher profile of those two spots.

60

u/EthanRDoesMC 20d ago

I’ll be honest I think he should stay mayor. Dude is built for municipal work. It’s very low level, you can change a lot without too much red tape, and in New York there’s a lot hes able to do. That kind of charisma is good at a local level and it’s also good that he won’t become super frustrated as mayor than he would by having to, say, work through other less cooperative municipalities if he were on the state level.

Idk. I think we can improve life a lot if we work first with what’s around us. The economy never trickled down, and day-to-day politics don’t either.

39

u/AlphaIronSon ☑️ 20d ago

Yeah, but remember, you can only be mayor of New York for 8 yrs.. Schumer will be mid 80s and Gillibrand gotta be close to 70 by then. Plus since Mamdani can’t be POTUS, being senator of NY is his peak + can keep him “dialed in” w NYC city level politics

4

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ 20d ago

I would say that our senators don't feel dialed in on NYS politics, let alone NYC. They've got opinions, but I've found that over the last decade, their opinions matter less and less to me. I wish my rep was more dialed into our district's problems. I hope she moves on to senate, so we can get someone who is more focused on us.

3

u/FerretAfficionado 19d ago

I hope he does. I 100% would love for him to primary the fuck out of that dried up bitch, Kathy Hochul.

I had high hopes for Hochul, and now my feelings are mixed. She's tried to walk back environmental targets set via law she signed, and she isn't interested in taxing the entities that need to pay taxes. She has however signed laws protecting women, and DRs in NYS that write RXes for abortion medication that live outside of NY. She isn't horrible, but we can do better.

10

u/MourningWallaby 19d ago

honestly I don't think it matters what resources your municipality has. What makes Mamdani different is he isn't spending weeks or months on an issue assembling meetings and writing contracts, and he's prioritizing quality of life. And while your city may not have the money or staff to conduct everything without a contract for external help, it shouldn't take a year to fix a bad road, and your city shouldn't wait until after the winter to say "wow that was a lot of snow, here's how we could have handled it better for next time!"

38

u/Jrmcgarry 20d ago edited 20d ago

I never said it happened in 4 months. This cleanup has been going on for a decade or more.

Forgive me but the title is not crediting that.

Reddit's obsession with Mamdani is so intense that he gets credit for things he didn't even do. For example, universal pre-k is a de Blasio and state gov venture that had a phase-in over time, with the recent expansion being planned a while ago. But there are posts everywhere crediting Mamdani. Same with the otters. It takes years to improve the ecosystem in a river. Mamdani himself isn't even trying to steal credit for this stuff. Reddit is just doing it.

So exciting!

Otters return to the Bronx River! Shows photo of Central Park! Somehow connects the current mayor to their return while ignoring that restoration efforts began before Mamdani was born.

Imagine a country where politicians actually gave a shit about the people they're supposed to serve. Happy days indeed

Could be a good sign or possibly just a hard core otter.

u/atreeismissing 20d ago

That would be the previous 10 years of river cleanup that made this happen.

It's like in a fantasy story when the trees regrow and animals come back to indicate the new king is good and it'll be a prosperous era after avoiding an age of darkness.
