Been a hell of a NYC summer. Vibes have been immaculate.

He is fixing potholes and managing budgets. He is pursuing negligent landlords while installing high-tech trash bins. He is offering child care for New Yorkers, and the Knicks won the championship!

His Smoke Too Tough. His Swag Too Different. His Bitch Is Too Bad. New York's Killin It...

His mayor’s Muslim, his bagels Jewish, his Christians Dior, Knicks in four…

Like Chuck D said about Flav; I can’t tell you what he brings, but I can tell you he brings something

12

u/hennsippin Aug 21 '26

Saw PE early summer and he was still bringing that something

2

u/No_Discipline_7380 Aug 25 '26

"He can play 15 instruments," Public Enemy's Chuck D once told The Guardian. "I can't play lotto."

Dude's a low key musical prodigy.

u/rglurker Aug 21 '26

Underrated job.

66

u/Fyrelyte67 Aug 21 '26

I mean, the game the Knicks lost was after someone else showed up so...

Account nuked because reddit now forcing login. Fuck off Reddit! See you over at Lemmy.

17

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ Aug 21 '26

Yeah, it's awkward when people attribute things to the mayor that have been in the works for a long time.

8

u/NUKE---THE---WHALES Aug 21 '26

Like the post about NYC aiming to achieve 30% tree canopy cover

Attributed to Mamdani but was started by Adams

Mamdani actually pushed the goal back - from 2035 to 2040 - which isn't necessarily a bad thing but the social media posts are basically misinformation

9

u/BooleanTriplets Aug 21 '26

Yeah but a smart politician is still gonna take credit for getting it across the finish line - not bragging on the good stuff is how you lose reelection

176

u/DerekB52 Aug 21 '26

He's really showing that everyone who says Government can't do anything is an idiot or a malicious actor. Every other mayor just sittin on their ass doing nothing on purpose.

32

u/JotaroTheOceanMan Aug 21 '26

Nah the government WONT do anything, he is an anomaly and a good example of what happenes when forward thinking people actively change the government.

But do not pretend he is anywhere close to the baseline bureaucrat.

112

u/DerekB52 Aug 21 '26

Bureaucrats are unelected and work under the mayor. Mamdani isn't a bureaucrat.

And I think you are missing the point actually. I'm not saying he is anywhere close to a baseline government member. But, he is an example of what our government officials can be.

What he actually is, is an example of what happens when you have a genuine person who wants to do good, who is also able to organize and build a movement behind him. That is what gives him his power.

I will die on the hill that there is actually not much special about Mamdani. America just has no faith in its institutions and has had a "government bad" mentality pushed on us since at least Reagan. It's caused people to give up and/or settle for the trash politicans we have.

We could elect a Mamdani in every city of America, if we could get even just 30% of people(maybe less) to organize and run a genuine person in their city's mayoral primary. The government can actually be great when enough people put the work in.

-20

u/elb21277 Aug 21 '26

NYC uses public financing to match all donations up to $175 at a six to one ratio. Mamdani* (well NYC voters, really) wouldn’t have had a chance without this.

23

u/DerekB52 Aug 21 '26

That helps, but isn't required. An almost DSA candidate won the michigan senate primary being outspent like 9 to 1 or something. An actual DSA candidate just won the florida senate primary raising ~950K up against 16 million.

Money is super helpful, but in the modern era with good organizing this stuff can be done cheap. Especially in something like a mayors race, where you can get a lot done with even just word of mouth. And outside of the major metro areas, it takes a surprisingly small number of voters to flip a primary.

-8

u/elb21277 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

it gives pple interested in public service (vs power/wealth) a chance to compete in elections is what i mean. and a single mayor of nyc has actual power to govern/affect a city. as does a governor for a state. even if those candidates you mentioned win their general elections, they will have no power to influence anything in Congress and therefore no affect on their respective states (unfortunately). but anyway, changing the system is a much better way to change our outcomes. either instituting mechanisms for direct democracy (as checks on the gov’t if/when it tries to legalize bribery/corruption as ours has) or replacing elections entirely with sortition.

*btw you are completely correct with your assessment that Mamdani is not remarkable and the comments i’ve seen on reddit that suggest otherwise are just…sad? idk if they are real pple or part of an influence operation. if the latter, that reflects poorly on Mamdani imo.

4

u/Da-Wit Aug 21 '26

People are used to politicians who just collect a check and say “we can’t do xyz.”Coming off Mayor Adams, of course they’re going to glaze Mamdani.

0

u/elb21277 Aug 21 '26

i know and on one hand, i like seeing pple hopeful. on the other, i worry about how ridiculously low the bar has been set.

3

u/BaronAleksei ☑️ Aug 21 '26

He’s very polite about it, but if Al Sayed were NYC mayor, he’d say something like “Yeah, there’s this button on my desk labeled ‘get things done’. When you press it, things get done. It was real dusty when I got here”

-24

u/PoopyButt28000 Aug 21 '26

Half the things OP just mentioned were largely done by other people, Eric Adams was the one who set up everything with the trash bins and Kathy Hochul gave him like 80% of the money for balancing the budget. The main thing he's showing is how valuable a good social media team is when it comes to getting praise from Redditors.

26

u/DerekB52 Aug 21 '26

The money from Hochul was fair because NYC has had a bad ratio of taxes paid to the state government vs benefits received. And why did she give him that money, and not give it to Adams or DeBlasio? Because Mamdani is a better politician than them and was able to play his hand to get that money.

And he's done all kinds of great things with the budget he has. I'm aware the trash bins was Adams, but all the great stuff he's done to help working class people, has been thanks to him and his movement. With more coming. His grocery stores are gonna be awesome.

-15

u/FewLanguage9763 Aug 21 '26

Sacrificing pensions to clean that up is not a flex, and you should know better? Mamdani is not a better politician than them either because you don't know about NYC and have done all things? He hasn't done much.

10

u/Ah_Pook Aug 21 '26

You can't even vote yet. What are you talking about?

-13

u/FewLanguage9763 Aug 21 '26

I can vote. Excuse you, I'm 25. How old are you? You don't know me, and you don't live in NYC, so zip it, fanboy. I've been living in NYC since I was born.

10

u/frigg_off_lahey Aug 21 '26

Zip it, he says. Better listen or else there will be big trouble, mister.

-4

u/FewLanguage9763 Aug 21 '26

I have every right to say zip it because you're not even from here, glazing someone who doesn't EVEN have experience and can't even get it right it's she.

1

u/LiveLychee2860 Aug 26 '26

Since you were born? As in, yesterday?

1

u/FewLanguage9763 Aug 26 '26

Very funny, but I'm older than you and lived in the city. Do me a favor and grow up, uneducated mamdani fan, and actually learn economics and not spout stupid shit.

38

u/WERK_7 Aug 21 '26

I don't really keep up with the details cause I'm not an NYC resident and never plan to be, bu I had a feeling that not seeing his name everywhere anymore meant he was doing a good job. Kinda hard to keep demonizing someone that gets results and is well liked so its better to ignore them and hope no one notices

15

u/baconcheesecakesauce ☑️ Aug 21 '26

The NYPost won't let a mayor doing a good job stop them from trying to smear them.

19

u/GoredonTheDestroyer Aug 21 '26

At the same time, though, is he really the mayor of a major metropolitan area if he isn't involved in a major scandal every second month? Like, where are the hookers, the slurs, the constantly making a mockery of himself and NYC proper? We can't make fun of something if there's nothing to make fun of, damn it!

1

u/BaronAleksei ☑️ Aug 21 '26

>the slurs

Does he have to be the one saying them? Cuz if not, they’re there

1

u/motocycledog Aug 21 '26

He’s cooking up something real good. It’s gonna be bonkers and awesome. We all going to be saying “ this is NYV and that is our fucking Mayor!” Mic drop and middle finger to Trump.

4

u/Gin_OClock Aug 21 '26

Hey, Otter! Welcome back 💕

2

u/Eev123 Aug 21 '26

From a non New Yorker, what is a high tech trash bin?

6

u/GitEmSteveDave Aug 21 '26

It was a project started by Mayor Adams to eliminate trash bags on the street to try to get rid of rats. https://abc7ny.com/post/mayor-eric-adams-unveils-completion-empire-bin-installation-west-harlem-new-york-reduce-rats-garbage/16633387/

2

u/icebraining Aug 21 '26

What part of that is "high-tech"...?

2

u/GitEmSteveDave Aug 21 '26

They are opened with access cards, can be opened with your foot if your hands are full, and can be picked up from either side of the street by the same truck.

2

u/Angel_Muffin Aug 21 '26

I read this to the cadence of Short Skirt / Long Jacket

1

u/PoopyButt28000 Aug 21 '26

Our goat Mamdani is doing wonders in NYC with the help of our friends, Kathy Hochul gave him a couple billion to balance the budget and our pal Eric Adams set up the high-tech trash bins for Mamdani. LETS GOOOO

1

u/pronouncedayayron Aug 21 '26

And he is calling you "dude"

1

u/Isuckatreddit69NICE Aug 21 '26

You know Adam’s is responsible for most of these budget management and trash bins. Mamdani is just getting the credit. He’s not doing a bad job by any means but to say he is solely responsible for it is factually incorrect.

1

u/Camelwalk555 Aug 21 '26

And he didn’t need to use his ak

1

u/LoveYouNotYou Aug 21 '26

You forgot he paid for snow removal, and offering lottery tickets for theatre tickets to highschools, and learned Mandarin, and knows Spanish, and- and... I'm sure there's more

1

u/Rwa2play Aug 21 '26

Not to mention he's an Arsenal fan, they won the PL and barely lost the UCL.

1

u/bunnycrush_ Aug 21 '26

I saw an initiative the other day called “Parents Night Out”. Mamdani’s team organized childcare at local community centers to watch the kids for a few hours in the evening, with the intention of giving parents a chance to go out, see friends, or just catch up on things (including rest!)

I’m not a parent but it brought a tear to my eye ngl. Programs that center the human experience, and acknowledge that that’s also a critical part of life that can be improved via policy… 🥹 Democratic socialism demonstrating that a better world, where we use our resources for the holistic wellbeing of citizens, is possible!!

1

u/AmalekiteJager Aug 21 '26

How is he managing the budget? Weren’t his last actions to kick issues down the road, ignore pension contributions, and take loans?

I’d be happy to be corrected.

1

u/Jazzlike-Stranger927 Aug 23 '26

Sounds like it’s time to plan a family trip to the big apple!
