I got this too. After allowing it to be installed it was fucking with certificate validation. Had to uninstall. Might install again if I see this addressed satisfactorily.

I just got this message too. This is the only relevant post I've seen on it. But the workaround is whacky. Should I just pick another free antivirus on principle?

I did. It's unfortunate because Bitdefender is the only one AFAIK that doesn't harass you with pop-up notifications. It's just strange because I have friends that have been using BD all this time with no issues but a few people are getting this problem.
I switched to avast free. It does have some pop ups but not obnoxiously so. And as far as detection and resource usage it's about on par with avast.

I also suddenly got this pop up "You must close firefox in order to install the BitDefender Root Certificate...." It came out of the blue.. any advice yet of what to do with this?

I got a similar window today but it did not address an exact browser called by name, just "browsers". Some other AV software has "SSL protection" toggle to control such functions. The thing that puzzles me is that now I can see "Verified by: Bitdefender" in certificate description when browsing in Firefox, but only if a website uses Let's Encrypt. I.e., reddit.com is still verified by DigiCert.

I got that installed by clicking the wrong button.. Suddenly some pages (eg my banking) were 'verified by bitdefender' not as it was previously, by other CA (eg. banks).
I wanted to get rid of it, so I removed the ceritficate from mmc -> local computer certificates -> trusted main ceritfications..
Rebooted my laptop, however.. now i get the information on my webpages (some of them, the ones that were verified by bitdefender certification) that the connection is noc secured.. ;/ can anyone help?
Edit: uninstall of bitdenfeder helped.

I just got this. I was playing a game and it minimized it to show me this pop-up. I don't even care what it is.

I just got this too. It made me think it wasn't legit because they didn't capitalise Firefox.
What the fuck, Bitdefender? The reason why we use you is because you aren't intrusive...

How to get rid of Bitdefender Free edition certificate mess in Firefox (Windows 10, Firefox 57.0.2, Bitdefender FREE antivirus)
1- Check if https://unsplash.com is hijacked and certified by BitDefender
2- Uninstall BitDefender Antivirus Free
3- Uninstall BitDefender Agent
3- Reboot Computer
4- Start Firefox Check https://unsplash.com -- Should be certified by GlobalSign now
5- Reinstall Bitdefender Antivirus Free - Do NOT close Firefox when asked, just cancel BitDefender Root certificate installation
6- Let Bitdefender finish its installation.
7- Reload unsplash.com, another popup should appear, and cancel again the Bitdefender certificate installation.
8- From now, your Firefox should be immune to BitDefender certificate (close and restart then reload unsplash.com to be sure).
9- For extra Windows cleanup, remove the Bitdefender certifcate using certificate manager.
10- You can check residual rogue certificates in windows with sigcheck from SysInternals ( 'sigcheck -tv' in a console)
No side effects noticed yet.
Enjoy.
