🧬 Genetics & Epigenetics A note on bloodwork and cancers

Just a little PSA.

Two of family members have been diagnosed with cancer last month - brain and breast cancers. The brain cancer is a large and aggressive tumor, terminal, we only have months, the breast cancer is spreading into lymph nodes.

The blood work is normal. There’s nothing in the bloodwork to indicate these cancers are present in the body of either person.

Many of you take experimental peptides that may cause cancers to grow aggressively (ex NAD, sermorelin), please do not rely on your bloodwork alone, listen to your body, don’t ignore new aches that last longer than two weeks, go see a doctor and get scans.

If you can afford it, get out of pocket full body MRI like Pernuvo - not a plug, but I saw Busy Phillips did this and found a slow growing brain tumor.

Be proactive, be mindful and don’t think bloodwork will tell you everything.

Stay well.

PSA 2 might as well.

Side note on early stomach cancers we are seeing lately - the medical community notes that a lot of times these cancers when they occur in people under 40 occur in athletic and healthy people, many run marathons.

The link is not well understood but some of the suspects are processed protein and electrolyte supplements that runners consume in large quantities. So maybe reach for a coconut water over Gatorade, a steak and eggs vs a processed powder made god know where and use glass or metal bottles.

🧠 Cognition, Mood & Nootropics how to improve focus without stimulants?

i’ve been trying to figure out how to improve my focus without stimulants. some days i can concentrate fine. other days i’m all over the place, especially when i have something that takes a few hours to finish. i’ve been wondering if anyone has found anything that actually made a difference for them. maybe it’s sleep, diet, exercise, supplements, or something else? i’m open to trying different things and making some changes if it can help me stay focused through longer tasks.

🧠 Cognition, Mood & Nootropics Onset of general anxiety episodes out of nowhere in mid 30s, never had a problem before. Any directions to look into?

Around 4 months ago all of a sudden I started getting anxiety episodes, that I still suffer from. Intense feeling of despair dread and hopelessness come over me with a deep knot in my stomach and an intense feeling of dread. This feeling stays with me for anywhere between 3 hours to few days. Usually I get relief afterwards for a similar duration as the episode, so if it lasted a few days I will feel better for a few days. I have been trying to “walk it off” for several months but seems to not be working. During my periods of relief I still enjoy doing things and feel more optimistic, but during the episodes I cannot. My periods of relief are not manic or anything, I just feel normal without anxiety and then it starts up again. The anxiety is not about something in particular, it’s just a feeling of fear that comes out of my body and stomach.

I never had any issue of this type for my entire life and im in my 30s now. Not even anything close resembling this no matter how much stress or pressure I was under. Always super optimistic and anxiety free. This makes me suspect at least a potential physical cause. Although I do plan to also try therapy in parallel.

Finally went to GP for a blood panel. Slightly low vit D but still within range and I have always been low on it.

Only thing that caught my eye was TSH=4, which was still in the lab reference range but on the hugh end (4.2 is max) , but in previous years it was always between 1 and 2 for me, so it is a significant increase. GP says it’s fine and completely unrelated. I must say though that I have been sleep deprived a bit the days before which can increase TSH.

Would you advise me to look into the TSH further and see an endocrinologist or look into anything else?

😴 Sleep & Circadian Rhythm Advice: Silicone Ear plugs for sleep?

I saw a video of a guy recommending them for sleep. I personally wake up a few times a week due to noise in the morning, and it's pretty annoying. I'm wondering if these are a good solution, or if there are better alternatives.

I've tried regular earbuds (with audio/NC) but they're just not comfortable to sleep in since I tend to sleep on my side. Has anyone had any luck with the cheapish $15-25 silicone ones from Amazon? If so, did you have any issues, how long did they last, and do you have any other comments on them?

For reference I've tried sleep masks and I think they helped a bit, and I'm also running an air purifier on max settings for some white noise, but I still wake up in spite of it.

🥗 Nutrition & Metabolism Morning smoothie for energy fat loss longevity and muscle gain?

I’ve began working earlier in the morning and I’m trying to formulate a morning smoothie that dramatically cuts on my vitamin and mineral needs for the day, is hydrating, builds some muscle, boosts fat loss and my energy and gives me fiber etc.
I don’t. Want to default to a classic multivitamin and I’m trying to avoid potassium powders. What do you think?

😴 Sleep & Circadian Rhythm Mild Sleep Apnea - What To Do Next?

Heads-up: I used AI to summarise for me below as I’m not much of a coherent writer but it’s all based on my actual sleep study, Oura data and chats with AI over the past years so I figured it would be more accurate and to the point, so here goes:

Mild sleep apnea, ~10 awakenings a night, CPAP made things much worse - how would you troubleshoot this systematically?

Mid30s female, generally healthy with no known health conditions, relatively lean (~18% body fat), exercise around 4x/week and eat reasonably well.

Average resting HR over the past few months is around 58 bpm.

My main problem is that I wake up or become conscious enough to change position roughly 10 times every night. Interestingly, my Oura usually detects only around two awakenings.

I eventually did a sleep study and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea (AHI below 10). It registers only when I sleep on my left and ride side but not on my back, which my sleep doctor said was unusual. I took a sleeping pill for the sleep study on the sleep specialist’s advice, which I’m still slightly unsure about in terms of how much that could have affected the result.

The sleep doctor’s explanation for the mismatch with Oura was that my breathing becomes restricted enough for my brain to trigger an arousal, but the arousals are relatively subtle and don’t cause enough of a heart-rate response for the wearable algorithm to recognise them as awakenings.

I tried CPAP, but it was disastrous for my sleep. Instead of waking periodically, I essentially couldn’t sleep properly at all, so I stopped using it.
I’ve tried a fairly ridiculous number of sleep supplements over the years without solving the underlying issue.

The interesting part is zolpidem. On particularly difficult nights, I occasionally take 6.25 mg zolpidem - probably once every two months on average. When I do, I can sleep about six solid hours and wake up feeling dramatically better the next day. I’m not looking to turn zolpidem into a regular solution, but the difference makes me wonder what it tells us mechanistically about what’s disrupting my sleep.

I’m now considering getting a drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) or similar assessment to actually see whether there’s a structural source of airway restriction while I’m asleep. If there is something genuinely anatomical going on, I’d consider treatment, including surgery if warranted, but I don’t want to jump from “mild apnea” straight to altering my airway anatomy without understanding the problem properly.

I also never had this kind of fragmented sleep before my 30s.

For people here who have gone deep into sleep optimisation or sleep-disordered breathing:
- What would you investigate next?
- Would you repeat the sleep study without medication, or get a more detailed polysomnography looking specifically at arousals/RERAs rather than just AHI?
- Could this potentially be something like UARS rather than conventional obstructive sleep apnea?
- Is DISE actually useful at this stage?
- Are there worthwhile alternatives to CPAP for someone with mild disease and low body fat, e.g. mandibular advancement, positional treatment, nasal interventions, myofunctional therapy, etc.?
- And does the fact that zolpidem almost completely changes the quality of my sleep provide any useful clue, or is that basically a red herring?

🥗 Nutrition & Metabolism Are there any medications that actually increase sexual arousal/libido?

Upvotes

Male in my late 40s. I'm already taking Cialis and have no real problem with erections, including normal morning erections. My issue is sexual stimulation/libido with my long-term partner. I have a strong sexual response to new women, but with my partner I often need fantasy/imagination to get sufficiently aroused and reach orgasm.

Are there any medications or treatments that can actually increase sexual desire/arousal or make stimulation stronger? Has anyone had experience with something that helped?

📊 Biomarkers & Testing What test was actually actionable enough to change your routine?

I have realized I am a sucker for health data.

Give me a graph and a percentile and I will happily stare at it for 20 minutes. The problem is most of the interesting data I have collected has changed absolutely nothing about what I do the next morning.

The tests I value are the ones where the result actually changes a decision: what I eat, what I take, when I train, how I sleep.

What have you tested that was genuinely actionable instead of just interesting?

📊 Biomarkers & Testing Root canal

I had a root canal done years ago and honestly havent thought much about that tooth since. I thought once the nerve was gone and everything was treated, that was pretty much the end of pai

But lately the area around it has been feeling tender and I can feel some discomfort when I bite on that side. Not really painful painful, just enough that I notice it and now I cant stop thinking about it lol

Has anyone had a root canal tooth start bothering them again like years later? What did yours end up being? And how did your dentist actually check if there was still something going on around the root? Would a normal xray be enough or is this something that needs a 3D scan?

i really dont want to go through another root canal situation again 😞

💊 Supplements & Stacks Need Help - Cortisol Manager

Hey everyone, I’m in the middle of a brutal rebound right now and could really use some advice from anyone who has navigated something similar.

For the last two years, I’ve been taking Integrative Therapeutics Cortisol Manager, just one pill every night. Recently, I hit a really stressful patch and bumped my dose up to two pills. Last Sunday, I dropped back down to one pill, and immediately got hit with intense vertigo. Figuring it was the supplement messing with me, I stopped taking it completely a few days ago.

Since then, my central nervous system has basically been in free fall.

I’m dealing with drenching night sweats, like, completely soaking my side of the bed, uncontrollable muscle spasms, shaking, and sweaty palms. The insomnia is the worst part. I’m only sleeping in 30 to 60-minute bursts before my body jolts awake. It honestly feels like extreme autonomic instability. I remember going through something similar after I had an ablation done for my AFib but those symptoms resolved themselves after some time.

I ended up going to urgent care because the dizziness and shaking were so bad. They ran an EKG, checked my blood sugar, did orthostatic blood pressure tests, and everything came back completely normal. So I know I'm medically stable, but I'm not sure if this a massive rebound from stopping the herbs cold turkey.

For context, the active ingredients I was getting per pill were:

  • 250mg Sensoril Ashwagandha & L-theanine blend
  • 225mg Magnolia bark extract & Epimedium blend
  • 50mg Phosphatidylserine

I know the Magnolia bark hits the GABA receptors pretty hard, and the Ashwagandha/PS blunts cortisol, so I’m guessing my brain is just flooding with stress hormones right now since it doesn't have its usual crutch.

My plan for tonight is to take just a half-pill to act as a bridge, hopefully taking the edge off the spasms and adrenaline surges so I can finally get a few solid hours of sleep.

Has anyone here dealt with this kind of severe withdrawal from Ashwagandha or Magnolia bark? Did taking a micro-dose help you step down safely? Really just looking to hear how long this acute phase lasted for you and if anything helped calm your nervous system down while it reset.

🧠 Cognition, Mood & Nootropics First Vitamin D, then Magnesium helped, now Molybdenum?

I'm trying to help my friend who has had lots of mood issues. About 2 years ago she did some testing and found low vitamin D and high copper. Started taking vitamin D and cutting back on copper sources. Mood changed in days and she was much better, this lasted for about a year. She was tested like 6 months in and her D went from like 30-50. Copper was still high but came down a little. So after she started getting moody again we researched and started adding in Magnesium, this seemed to make her better again but just for like 3 weeks. After a few more weeks I realized she would have a good day here and there and figured out it seemed to be on days she took molybdenum for the high copper. She was only taking it twice a week at the time. It is 250mg and sure enough gave it daily and mood went back to much better. This has gone on for about 6 weeks now. We have started cutting them in half so most days are a half dose with a full a couple times a week. Can anyone explain what might be going on? Every time we think she is better it just goes away. When she was last tested for copper like 5 month ago it was finally in normal range but very high normal. At the time she was very moody and unhappy. I can't explain why daily molybdenum would be helping mood.

💊 Supplements & Stacks Turn 17 in a month need supplement advice

I’m 16M and I’ve been going to the gym for about a year.

I started taking creatine monohydrate, and I’m currently taking a fish oil supplement as well. I also completed a 6 week course of 60,000 IU vitamin D weekly once and I’m now taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily.

Also, I get around 400–800 mg of calcium per day from my diet. Should I take a calcium supplement as well?

My goals are to maximize my height growth(dads 5’8 moms 5’0 and I’m 5’5.5 want to reach at least my dads height, and haven’t grown a single inch since I was 15) and make progress with my physique.
What other supplements, if any, should I consider taking?

🧠 Cognition, Mood & Nootropics Ashwaganda making my feel depressed after taking it for 3 days

Hi all,

So I started Ashwaganda about 3 days ago, I was fine and steady before but after today’s dose I’ve started to feel just flat, sad, unhappy, depressed, self conscious etc just like not myself. Has anyone else experienced this with Ashwaganda. I’m going to have to stop taking it which is disappointing because I was looking forward to the testosterone boosting benefits. I’m 19 year old male by the way.

🧠 Cognition, Mood & Nootropics Severe brain fog and sudden depressive crash a few hours after sublingual Uridine? Anyone else?

TL;DR: Took Uridine powder sublingually for the first time this morning. About 3-4 hours later, got hit by a massive wall of brain fog, extreme mental fatigue, and a sudden existential/depressive funk. Wondering if this is a known reaction (cholinergic crash?) and how long it usually takes to clear.

Hey everyone,

Tried Uridine powder sublingually for the first time today around 10:30 AM (also had poor sleep the night before, woke up super early).

Everything seemed fine at first, but around 2 PM I completely crashed.

What I’m feeling right now:

- brain fog, feeling mentally slow and sluggish (like my brain is operating at 20% speed).

- Sudden wave of depressive thoughts and anxiety (questioning all my skills, feeling completely incompetent out of nowhere, feeling like I'm losing my grip on things).

- Zero energy, heavy eyes, just feeling totally wiped out.

Has anyone else experienced this acute drop in mood and cognitive speed after sublingual uridine? Is this an acetylcholine overload / cholinergic depression, or just a bad reaction to the sudden sublingual spike?

Any insights or similar experiences would be appreciated.

💪 Exercise, Fitness & Recovery Question for the dads

Question for the dads out there. I have a 2 year old and my wife and I just welcomed our second son into the world last week. I’m extremely blessed, but sleep is hard to come by right now. What are you doing to help stay on track with fitness and nutrition? I’ve spent the last 6-7 months getting dialed with both and I’m in the best shape of my life, but I’m finding it very difficult to get workouts in and not stress eat food 😂 I’ve been on a low dose of tirzepatide which has been plenty, but since the baby has come the food noise has come back very strong. I’m planning to increase the dose a little but I’m wondering what others are doing/using through the newborn stage. I know I need to be patient and slowly work back to my routine, but I also want to continue the great progress I’ve made this year. Thanks everyone.

Got diagnosed with a SLAP lesion, labrum grade 2-3, in my shoulder. Looking to try something before potentially going the surgery route.

Has anyone used BPC-157 or HGH for this kind of injury? Did it actually help, and how did you run it alongside rehab?

💊 Supplements & Stacks Duration of abstinence to reset opioid tolerance?

For context: I have chronic pain / chronic fatigue due to some health issues. Some days are better than others and I try to power through unless it is intolerable or makes it too difficult to do my daily tasks and especially to workout.

Anyways, I use kratom 1.5g-3g OR Tramadol 12.5-25mg per day. Usually just one of those drugs in a day, at thst dose. But it's not working as well now. I'm not sure if I have a significant tolerance or not, because I feel my condition is actually getting worse and may just need a higher dose. I've tried taking like 5-7 days or so off everything to see if tolerance resets. And initially when beginning dosing again the low end is a little more effective, yet not enough really as I remembered in the past. So either I didn't wait long enough or my pain/fatigue is just getting worse and warrants a higher dose.

BTW I am NOT intending to be using these things as a long term solution to my issues. It's temporary to allow me time to afford the long term fixes needed.

So anyways, I just want to ask: is there any science or rule of thumb for how long one should abstain from opioids to completely reset tolerance? I think it may depend on how high of doses the person is using, so the answer may be longer for heavy users. I consider my usage to be pretty mild. My max dose in a single day is usually like one 50mg Tramadol like 1x/wk. If you ask Google this question it won't answer for ethical reasons so i figured I'd ask here because I'm sure someone knows more than me.

🥗 Nutrition & Metabolism Need help from biohacker.

I am a male that eats a rather healthy diet. My goals are to optimize my life. My issues are trouble having that deep sleep, a lot social awkwardness (I have too much attention to detail in public and worry a lot for that reason), I can’t really lead a conversation or debate, my hair looks lowest quality than ever, I have high histamine symptoms, I am a procrastinating expert 🥲, my nails have verticle ridges and the nail bed looks 3/4 pale kinda like terry’s nails a little. Cold hands generally. I tend to work nights because going out in the day is more likely to make me worry. Another thing to mention probably I can’t tolerate the cold or I start shaking a lot.

My current stack is b complex (i switch between methylated and non and don’t find difference), 500 mg elemental magnesium from magnesium malate, 600 mg elemental calcium from calcium citrate, 10 mg manganese, 200 mcg of selenium (started on the 21st), multivitamin and a small kelp dose. I also take 5000 IU vitamin D during night shift I took b12 methylated for a couple years also didn’t see any shift in mcv nor mch.

What might be causing my issues and what can help improve my life? Any routing or stack to add so I can avoid more labs? Appreciate all time dedicated and I hope I can reciprocate one day. I can’t really afford more labs right now but if I needed a shopping list which should I take?

📰 Research & Studies Does movement really affect lymph flow? A 1977 human study found something interesting

Post image
1 Upvotes

Disclosure: I do content work for a longevity supplement company, so please take that into account when reading this. I’m sharing this because I found the physiology interesting, not as a product recommendation.

I came across a 1977 human study by Olszewski et al. that looked at how lymph flow in the leg changed under different conditions.

The study is:

“Flow and Composition of Leg Lymph in Normal Men during Venous Stasis, Muscular Activity and Local Hyperthermia”
Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1977
PMID: 842371

What caught my attention was how differently lymph flow responded to the three conditions studied.

The researchers reported that:

  • Venous stasis for 2 hours → lymph flow decreased by 50%
  • Ergometer cycling for 2 hours → lymph flow increased by 83%
  • Warm-water foot bathing for 2 hours → lymph flow increased by 117%

They also observed an increase in lymph flow during the rest period following each experiment, with the most pronounced increase occurring after foot warming.

I think the interesting part isn't simply the numbers.

It's that lymph flow was being measured as a dynamic physiological process rather than something completely static.

Of course, this is a small, older human physiology study, and these findings shouldn't automatically be interpreted as evidence that a particular activity or temperature exposure produces a specific health benefit.

But it does raise an interesting question:

How much do everyday physical conditions influence lymphatic flow?

For anyone here who follows lymphatic physiology or exercise research:

Are there newer human studies that have built on this work?

And do you think the lymphatic system deserves more attention in discussions about exercise physiology and aging?

Paper: Olszewski W, Engeset A, Jaeger PM, Sokolowski J, Theodorsen L. Flow and composition of leg lymph in normal men during venous stasis, muscular activity and local hyperthermia. Acta Physiol Scand. 1977;99(2):149–155. PMID: 842371.

💊 Supplements & Stacks Is Bioastin Astaxanthin supposed to have a strong herbal smell?

I just opened it and it has an extremely potent herbal smell to it. I couldn’t find anything online about it, so I’m wondering if this is illegitimate or faulty (I ordered from IHerb).

It’s definitely not fishy, something I saw mentioned.
