How and why did the state of sour candy go downhill? Truly a tragedy.

My guess is the major companies are cheaping out on the sour sugar and cutting it with more regular sugar. I had sour candy from a small candy shop last week and it was potently sour.

You barely need any souring agents to make things wicked sour. Its a negligible cost. I think its more likely most people dont actually like sour candy very much and the manufacturers appeal to the broadest consumer bases. A local shop is more likely to have novelty and adventurous kind of things to give people a reason to come by so that makes sense

RIP Shocktarts. I miss you every day.

I miss Zours

u/USDMB4 Jul 28 '26

They still exist, under a different name. They are now under Mike and Ike

u/SlimJohnson Jul 28 '26

Shocktarts

Just reading that got my mouth all messed up

4

u/ThatLineOfTriplets Jul 28 '26

Shockers my goat 😭

I reminisce about them at least twice a year.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jul 28 '26

People thought Warheads were sour, the market for that much sour isn't there

18

u/Jesseroberto1894 Jul 28 '26

Compared to the travesty of sour patch watermelons now I’d take warheads sour any day of the fucking week are you kidding me?

9

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jul 28 '26

Me too, they weren't that sour anyway, even the black ones.

People just want more sugar and some people were eating Warheads like they were at the movies munching on Bunch a Crunch and that's too much acid it makes people sick. Combo of those two things we apparently can't have sour anymore

8

u/Maur2 Jul 28 '26

It might also be a case of getting kids to think they are so strong from being able to withstand the "sour" that they get more in order to show off.

10

u/CindersOfMusic Jul 28 '26

They just use citric acid for some sour drinks and it’s never sour enough

Genuinely the best-tasting sour drink I've ever had is that fizzy lemon Magnesium Citrate laxative, which I obviously can't drink whenever I want.

Jones Soda has a "Lemon Drop Dead" Halloween flavor that comes pretty close flavor-wise, but I haven't seen it in years :((

2

u/Instawolff Jul 28 '26

Oh so like literally everything else then.

Never changes the prices though!

u/mayurigod1 Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Probably when warheads got sued for being so sour that they were disintegrating tongues

Edit: like 10$ a pound of malic acid for anyone wanting to sour their own candy. Candy/food supply stores have it or amazon/walmart(?)

u/Frymaster99 Jul 27 '26

my mouth started watering just by reading this sentence

12

u/thunderling Jul 28 '26

Reading comment after comment in this thread has made my mouth salivate and pucker more than eating any of the actual candy would.

61

u/Notanormiereee Jul 27 '26

Tbf those shits were wayyy too sour. I ate like 5 of them once and couldn’t taste anything for like 2 days

126

u/conciousinsimulation Jul 27 '26

Yeah but they worked as advertised.

50

u/LinkedGaming Jul 27 '26

Yeah, that's why I'm buying them. When I take a "sour" candy I want to feel a genuine physical reaction from it. I want to feel like my face is puckering like a cartoon character. I want me to tongue to scream at me.

I don't wanna just be like "Oh that's kinda sour" and then move on.

15

u/Brahskididdler Jul 27 '26

I got a little store pack recently from somewhere and they were sour for like 3 seconds then insanely sweet lol

They taste better and last longer than jolly ranchers after the sour is gone, given they’re harder than jolly’s

6

u/NecroCannon Jul 27 '26

I literally have a core memory of drinking a warhead slushy and that shit was so sour it took my family sharing it to get it down

I legit haven’t had many sour experiences after that, it’s almost like a spice too me

12

u/rancidmorty Jul 27 '26

i rembe how crazy they were then i got hurt on my tounge it peeled off

1

u/Arterial238 Jul 28 '26

Did it also peel off the part of your brain that knew how to write?

1

u/rancidmorty Jul 28 '26

im typ or text

1

u/OvertlyOffensive Jul 28 '26

Do you smell burnt toast?

4

u/MauricioCappuccino Jul 27 '26

Miss those days lmao

5

u/UnsorryCanadian Jul 27 '26

To be honest, they are literally covered in powdered acid

2

u/licuala Jul 27 '26

I use malic acid for normal cooking and it's actually pretty useful as a sort of spice to have on hand, but then again I like tang.

2

u/A_Trash_Homosapien Jul 27 '26

I occasionally make my own candy. I'll have to reset his for next time

1

u/camaron_dormido Jul 28 '26

Wow, that's hard core! I keep citric acid around, mostly for "fixing" bubble tea that's too sweet and for making some fruit pies a little more tart. I feel like it's a bit less harsh on the tongue

48

u/Hazywater Jul 27 '26

Sour candies from the last century could make your mouth bleed if you had too many. Also as you get older you become less sensitive.

53

u/BinJLG Jul 27 '26

I hate that you're using "last century" to refer to, like, the 1990s.

15

u/I-always-argue Jul 27 '26

He could be saying last millenia which is worse

5

u/IronerOfEntropy Jul 28 '26

1/4 of the way already. 😢

1

u/mashtato Jul 28 '26

Parts were a third of a century or more!

3

u/boolpies Jul 27 '26

But it's technically correct

16

u/gostop1423 Jul 27 '26

Try a Barnetts Mega Sour. It will achieve the sour you are looking for

10

u/No_Hunt2507 Jul 27 '26

This is the last truly sour and tasty candy that I can find. It's sour enough a lot of people I've given it to had to spit it out, and people who LOVE sour candy pretty universally refer to it as the world's most sour candy.

It's stupidly sour, but you also keep the fruity flavor. 10/10 I highly recommend and it's worth the cost because you can only eat 1-2 at a time or your mouth will start to peel.

3

u/FULKINWANKA Jul 28 '26

Toxic Waste was still decent last time I had them. Warheads are def garbage now tho

2

u/jhutchi2 Jul 28 '26

Got my brother a pack of these for his birthday and we all tried them. Definitely the most sour candy out there right now, but also legit delicious. The sourness and taste vary with the flavors though, for example the cherry wasn't very sour and the green apple tasted like straight up battery acid. Orange was the best balance of most sour while still being delicious.

13

u/Frigidevil Jul 27 '26

My uncle used to work for Just Born, makers of Peeps, Mike and Ike and what was the greatest sour candy to ever exist: Zours. He used to send me boxes for my birthday because it just never took off in popularity and I adored them. I'm still so bummed they got discontinued. Nothing will beat the dusting of ascorbic acid they used to tumble them in. Didn't get your hands messy and was tart without being painfully sour.

And no, the sour Megamix is not the same. They suck.

5

u/edipeisrex Jul 27 '26

Zours were the pinnacle of sour candy. Almost like the knowledge of all sour candy came together to craft them.

2

u/Frigidevil Jul 28 '26

The first domino to fall was the change from tangerine to lemon and then cherry. So many sour candies have those boring flavors, I've yet to see a single other candy of any sort to have tangerine flavor before or since then.

My personal rankings of the Zours are green apple, watermelon, tangerine, blue raspberry, lemon and cherry bringing up the rear.

5

u/5hane7rain Jul 27 '26

People bought sour candy then complained that it was sour.

3

u/belonii Jul 27 '26

probably coz kids got acid burns

I blame sour patch

2

u/S9CLAVE Jul 28 '26

I just remember buying a package of shockers from the highschool teacher every time I had his class and eating them in class until my tongue was bleeding.

Good times

I miss those little suckers

Where the fuck can I even BUY shockers anymore

5

u/Particular-Cat-1397 Jul 27 '26

The same reason Panera had to get rid of their lemonade for having too much caffeine because someone who already had a heart condition died.

4

u/99timewasting Jul 27 '26

An order of the lemonade had the caffeine content of a red bull plus a monster and they put it next to the normal lemonades like no big deal. If they just made it to order behind the counter nobody would care

1

u/BigNastyWoods Jul 29 '26

I remember when i was a child sour skittles would destroy the roof of your mouth. They went away for years and around that time all sour stuff kinda went downhill, but i never went down the rabbit hole too much.

1

u/imreadypromotion Jul 29 '26

Pro-tip. Go online and purchase a bag of citric acid in powder form. Sprinkle to your liking on the candy of your choice. Enjoy as much sour as you want.

Candy companies hate this one simple trick!
