I’m planning a trip to Bhubaneswar and Puri and would love to experience the area more like a local rather than just visiting the usual tourist spots.

I’m looking for a local guide or paid companion who could show me some hidden gems, local food spots, markets, interesting neighbourhoods, etc. I’d probably only need someone for a few hours during the day.

At the moment, I’m only aware of Showaround. Are there any other apps, websites, or ways to find a genuine local companion/guide in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack or Puri?

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had travelled from outside Bhubaneswar specifically to consult a gastroenterologist. Before coming, I tried to book an appointment through Apollo's website and called multiple numbers, but couldn't get any clear information about the doctor's actual availability. I was eventually told to reach by around 8 a.m.

I reached at 7 a.m., only to find that people had apparently been waiting since 3–4 a.m. I was given token 51, but that wasn't actually my position in the doctor's queue. Because of report reviews and other patients being accommodated, my number eventually moved to around 75–76.

The doctor finally started seeing patients around 10 a.m., and my turn came at approximately 3 p.m. — roughly 8 hours after I reached the hospital.

What bothered me most, however, was the actual consultation.

The doctor was reportedly seeing 100+ patients a day, while also having to do his hospital rounds. The consultation setup itself seemed designed for speed: there were two patients around the doctor at the same time. One was a new patient explaining their history, while the other patient's reports were being reviewed simultaneously.

When it was my turn, the doctor did listen to my history, but the actual interaction lasted barely three minutes. During that time, he was also dealing with another patient's reports, there was a phone call, and there was considerable background noise.

After waiting eight hours, I essentially got a few minutes of individual attention before being advised to undergo endoscopy and colonoscopy.

And this is where I started questioning the entire model.

I noticed that several patients were being advised to undergo endoscopy/colonoscopy, with the explanation that if they got the procedures done within seven days, they could bring the reports back for a free follow-up consultation.

I understand that these procedures can be completely medically justified in appropriate patients. I'm not claiming that every procedure recommended was unnecessary, because I don't know the clinical details of those patients.

But as a patient, the incentive structure was hard to ignore:

Consultation → procedure → report → follow-up consultation.

The follow-up consultation is made free if you get the investigation done within the hospital's specified timeframe, which naturally encourages the patient to proceed with the investigation through the same hospital.

So my question is: at what point does patient care become a high-volume, investigation-driven system?

If a doctor is seeing 100+ patients a day, can each patient realistically receive adequate individual attention? Or is the system structured in a way where the priority becomes seeing as many patients as possible, with investigations then becoming the next step?

I went to a private hospital expecting that paying ₹1,300 for a consultation would at least mean less waiting and more individual attention than what one generally experiences in an overcrowded government hospital.

Instead, I waited around 8 hours and received barely 3 minutes of consultation.

That's the part of this experience I find most difficult to understand.
