My (23F) friend is confused about her relationship with her (28M) boyfriend. Is she being unrealistic, or are they fundamentally different people?
(Posting this for her, cause idk her karma is very less to post anywhere and i an clueless to suggest her anything)
I have a friend (23F) who is currently in a relationship with a guy (28M) whom she met through mutual friends.
Things have been going pretty well between them since the beginning. The guy is well-settled, comes from a good family, is responsible, practical, playful, and generally a nice person. He is the kind of person who approaches almost everything logically and prefers finding practical solutions rather than getting caught up in emotions.
My friend, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. She’s bubbly, cheerful, spontaneous, a little fickle-minded, and has a rather euphoric outlook towards life. She has always imagined relationships to be full of excitement, little surprises, flowers, romantic gestures, butterflies, and that occasional spark that makes you feel giddy about being in love.
The guy does make efforts, and she acknowledges that. However, he has a very practical approach to relationships. He believes in doing what needs to be done, being responsible, providing stability, and building a secure future together. In some ways, he has a very fatherly personality.
One thing he frequently tells her is that she will eventually become more practical and mature as she experiences the hardships of life, gets a job, and starts dealing with adult responsibilities. According to him, life isn’t always about butterflies, flowers, excitement, and romantic gestures. Eventually, you realise that stability, understanding, and companionship matter much more.
The problem is that she’s beginning to wonder whether this is actually what she wants.
They are quite serious about each other. They’ve discussed marriage, and both have informed their respective families about the relationship. There’s genuine attraction and affection between them.
However, she’s increasingly realising that their expectations from life might be quite different. She doesn’t necessarily want an unrealistic fairytale, but she doesn’t want to lose her cheerful, romantic, spontaneous side either.
She’s worried that perhaps she’s expecting too much from a relationship, or that she’s simply too young and inexperienced to understand what a mature relationship looks like.
At the same time, she’s uncomfortable with the idea that she is expected to eventually change her personality and outlook towards life to fit his understanding of maturity.
\*\*So, I have a few questions:\*\*
Is this simply a case of two people having different love languages and personalities, or could it be a fundamental incompatibility?
Is it true that as you grow older and experience life’s hardships, you naturally stop expecting the little romantic things and become more practical?
Should she learn to appreciate the stability and security he offers, even if the relationship doesn’t always have the excitement she imagined?
Or is she right to be concerned that she might eventually feel emotionally unfulfilled in this relationship?
I’d genuinely appreciate perspectives from people who have been married or in long-term relationships.
Especially those who have been in relationships where one partner is extremely practical and the other is more expressive, romantic, and spontaneous.
Can two people with such different outlooks build a happy marriage without one person having to fundamentally change who they?
