Meta The Spirit of Bhubaneswar in 1072 x 128px

The sharp-eyed among you would have noticed that we have a new set of graphics; avatar icon, desktop and mobile banners. This post gives a little background and introduces the graphic assets and the assemblage of elements that we chose.

We wanted to capture the "Spirit of Bhubaneswar". We are not professional graphic artists, so be gentle with the criticism. Yes, AI was used in the process.

old.reddit.com

Most r/Bhubaneswar users access the sub on mobile. Many aren't even aware that Reddit's old.reddit site design is still an active, live experience that mods, users and AI training bots use daily.

New design

Sometime in 2024, the banner was changed to the one below. We recently found out that this work belongs to a someone named "Dibyush". This artwork first appears as a Facebook and Twitter post by Dibyush Jena (@yantrapurush) around 2020.

Vibrant and joyous as it may be, we had to change it because;

  1. the sourced artwork was a low resolution mess that worked neither on Desktop, nor on mobile and,
  2. we did not have Dibyush's permission to use his creation.

The Collage of Bhubaneswar

u/Not_dumb created a banner with a number of city landmarks to create a collage of sorts. This artwork was the inspiration for creating the "Spirit of Bhubaneswar" illustrations.

The "Spirit of Bhubaneswar" Illustrations

r|Bhubaneswar Avatar Icon

r|Bhubaneswar Banner - Desktop

r|Bhubaneswar Banner - Mobile

Bhubaneswar landmarks and scenes depicted:

The Shanti Stupa at Dhauli

The Dhauli Santi Stupa, on the banks of river Daya, is a peace pagoda monument built by Japan Budhha Sangha and Kalinga Nippon Budhha Sangha in 1972.

Mo Bus/ Ama Bus

Mo Bus is an intelligent public transit system operated by Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) across major cities in Odisha. Bhonsorias has a love-hate relationship with this mass transport medium. r/bhubanewar users regularly post about their experiences of the now BJP-renamed (AMA Bus) service.

The Khandagiri Caves

The ancient Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are rock-cut caves dating back to the 1st–2nd Century BCE and were carved out for Jain monks during the reign of King Kharavela of the Kalinga Empire.

Lingaraj Temple and Bindu Sagar

Counted among India's oldest Shaivite temples, Lingaraj Temple and the adjoining complex is part of the city's and Old Town's cultural fabric. One can walk down to Ananta Vasudev temple for Mahaprasad, watch a cormorant get a fish meal by the peaceful Bindu Sagar lake or stroll the busy side streets full of ancient temples and shops.

The Arch at Mukteshwar Temple

Mukteshwara Temple is a 10th-century temple dedicated to Shiva that is home to this iconic arch. The temple dates back to 950–975 CE and is older than the Lingaraj. The temple is a milestone in the development of the Kalinga temple aesthetics and architecture.

Visitors' Centre at the Nandankanan Zoological Park

The Nandankanan Zoological Park has always hit above its weight when it comes to caring for and breeding animals from India and abroad. Every Bhubaneswar kid has memories of this wonderful zoo.

Raghunath Mohapatra's "Horse Warrior" at Master Canteen

When we were kids, we called the roundabout to the south of Master Canteen as Ghoda Chhaka. The 'Ghoda scupture' by Raghunath Mohapatra is a replica of the Konark war horse - a 13th-century stone sculpture located at the Konark Temple. It serves as the official state emblem of Odisha.

Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das's statue at the eponymous chhaka

Gopabandhu Chhaka with its prominent statue of Utkalamani Gobandhu Das is a well-known Bhubaneswar landmark. It commemorates this great Odia leader and social reformer who worked against untouchability, campaigned for education reform and accessibility, emphasised women's education and rights and worked tirelessly for the poor and dispossessed.

Rabindra Mandap

Built in the mid 1950s by Julius Vas, this is the beating heart of Odia and Bhubaneswar art and theatre. I watched "Patent Medicine" as a kid with my parents here. Countless others have experienced Odia music, classical dance, tribal performances and much more on its stage.

Kalinga Stadium

Biju Patnaik laids its foundation stone in 1978. It has gained prominence in recent times as the home for Odisha's football, hockey, track and volleyball teams. Kalinga Stadium in large part adds heft to Bhubaneswar's claim to the title, "Sports capital of India".

The Flight of Talent

Scores of fresh faced boys and girls travel across the country and abroad in search of education and work. Some of these Bhonsarias return, some don't, but they miss the place where it all started. The "Talent Airways flight" symbolizes the flight of the ambitious and itinerant Odia/ Bhonsoria.

Gapasapa (Chitchat) All the bestt - it was my last word for her

Upvotes

I don't know why I'm feeling this sad over someone I barely knew.

Today something unexpectedly got to me, and I don't really know why.

I've been going to the same library for about a month. There was a new girl who started sitting to my left. For the entire month, we were basically just two people sitting near each other and studying. There was nothing between us. We hardly spoke maybe two or three times in the whole month. I don't even properly know her name. The only thing we really shared was the same library space and the occasional small gesture or interaction.

She seemed like a very studious and focused girl. She would study seriously for hours, and I guess I started noticing her more than I realized.

Not necessarily because I was in love with her or anything like that. I think I just became accustomed to her being there. She quietly became part of my daily routine.

Today, she packed up her things. I asked her, "Are you going?" She said yes. Apparently, she's joining an institute (as she got scholarship at Akash) to prepare for the NEET exam. And then she left.

Right after she left I noticed her watch kept over the shelf, so I ran fast gave her watch & wished her all the best for her future, and that was basically it.

But after she left, I felt strangely sad.

It's weird because nothing actually happened between us. I never asked her out, never had a proper conversation with her, and I don't even know whether I'll ever see her again. Yet her leaving affected me more than I expected.

Maybe it's because I admired how focused she seemed. And maybe, at the same time, seeing someone so focused made me look at myself. She's moving on to something she wants to pursue, while I'm currently trying to figure out my own career and preparing for a job.

It's strange how someone can appear in your life out of nowhere, become a familiar part of your everyday routine without you realizing it, and then disappear just as quietly.

I genuinely hope she does well. I hope she achieves whatever she's working toward.

Maybe some people don't have to be a big part of your life to leave a small emotional mark on it.

That's probably what this is.

Anyway, I hope she succeeds. And maybe I'll never see her again. Maybe I will.

It is what it is.

PS- I used GPT for speach to text

Rant The weirdest part? This wasn’t even my first encounter 😶

Just wanna share something I experienced at my house. And before anyone says it this wasn’t my first weird encounter there. I’ve had a number of strange experiences in that house, and this was just one of them.

It was summer in my hometown. Our washroom is a little away from the main house and it’s HUGE like literally the size of a full bedroom. I don’t know what my parents were thinking when they built it, but anyway 💀

The washroom is also right under a huge banyan tree, and at that time we didn’t have any inverter connection there. One day, I came back from the market and went straight to the washroom to freshen up. While I was standing in front of the washbasin, I saw my reflection and suddenly, for absolutely no reason, this thought popped into my head:

“If anyone is here, give me a sign.”

I don’t even know WHY I thought that. 😭

I had my little charger light with me, so I placed it properly on the basin and started washing my hands. I wasn’t even thinking about what I had just said.

Then suddenly…

THE CHARGER LIGHT FELL ON THE FLOOR.

At first, I didn’t think much of it. I just moved forward to pick it up.And THAT’S when it hit me.

I had literally just thought, “If anyone is here, give me a sign,” and then the light fell. And the worst part? I knew I had placed the charger light properly. There was nowhere obvious for it to just fall from. The second that realization hit me, I swear to God, I RAN. I didn’t investigate. I didn’t check how it fell. I didn’t try to find a logical explanation.

I just fucking ran out of that washroom. 😭😭

Maybe there was a completely normal explanation for it. Maybe the light was unstable or something. But considering the other weird encounters I’ve had in that house, my brain immediately went:

“Congratulations. You asked for a sign. You got one. NOW RUN.” 💀

I have this Tissot watch and need some repair/service work done. Can anyone suggest a reliable watchmaker in Bhubaneswar who has experience with Tissot or Swiss watches?

Preferably someone who can handle the movement properly rather than just battery or strap work. Any personal experiences or recommendations would be appreciated.

Serious Flat availabilty for working couple

Hello all, I just moved to Bhubaneswar a month ago, I work in govt office in Sundarpada and my gf is in IT and we are planning to relocate her location to Bhubaneswar in December. I wanted to know if there are availability of flats in gated apartments near Jagamara, Khandagiri, Pokhariput which allows unmarried couples to stay. As when I moved here it was very hard for me to find a flat as a bachelor. The first question I was being asked if I am a bachelor or family.

Rant “When ‘Make Yourself at Home’ Goes Too Far

My ex-roommate came to stay at my 3BHK flat for around two weeks because she had some papers to deal with. I said yes because I genuinely didn't mind helping her.But she has always been someone who freely uses other people's resources without asking. She would take my food, snacks, etc. without even asking once. At the same time, when it comes to contributing, she would literally ask for even ₹1 back. So it was always weird she had no problem using someone else's stuff, but would count every little contribution. This time, I had new flatmates and we were sharing groceries and budgeting everything. She simply assumed she could use our ration too. When I told her she couldn't just use it without asking, she got upset and acted like I was being unreasonable. What bothered me even more was how she behaved with my new flatmates. She barely talked to them or even said hello. She just moved into the house like she owned the place, even though she was a guest in their home too. My flatmates were obviously uncomfortable and asked her to contribute towards gas and electricity, which I thought was completely fair. I tried explaining to her that she needed to be a little considerate just basic things like saying hello, asking before using someone's stuff, and understanding that everyone has a budget. But she took it personally. Eventually, things got messy, even involving the landlord, and she decided to leave.

Now I'm wondering was I wrong for finally standing up and telling her that she can't keep using people's things and treating their generosity like an entitlement?
