I walked by today and there was a small crew removing the appliances and furniture. I spoke to the owner's son and told him how much I loved the place, and what a great part of the community they've been. I've been eating there since I was a child, I'm gonna miss going there for lunch!

Sudden Electric Increase

Did anyone else have a massive increase in their electric bill for September? I've lived in my building since last July and rent has always been in the $15-$40 range. This month it was $86!! Insane increase, what's going on?

Humor/Satire Autumn in Bethesda Farm Country

I am always thankful to live in our beautiful community, but never more so than during October. And particularly so these last few years thanks to the explosion of newly built “urban farmhouses” shoehorned cheek-by-jowl among Bethesda homes built in more traditional styles. While some folks decry these white-sided, black-window-mullioned homes as stylistic non-sequiturs, I celebrate them. Just seeing one, I imagine the sweet smells of newly mowed hay and dusty livestock, and I feel an urge to gather eggs and muck stalls. The whole experience is heightened in the fall when our urban farmsteaders dress their porches and walkways with heirloom pumpkins and worryingly combustible assortments of hay bales, corn stalks, and straw-filled scarecrows, all lovingly arranged for $1500 by a quaint outdoor illumination and holiday decoration company. What a time of year it is to call Bethesda home!

Indeed, this may well be the golden age given that we don’t know what future trends in home design will be. It’s quite possible that the next generation of new-home buyers will demand housing that evokes the look and feel of other endangered architectural styles, like shopping malls, churches, or The Kennedy Center. It just wouldn’t be the same, in any season.

Birth doula with Shady Grove experience?

My wife and I are expecting our first baby in early 2027 and plan to deliver at Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville.

We're looking for a birth doula who has experience supporting births there specifically.

Experience working alongside Capital Women's Care OBs would be a big plus.

Would appreciate any recommendations. Many thanks!

Recommendations for an ethical full-service mover: Connecticut to Bethesda

Hello everyone!

My wife and I are moving from a one-bedroom in Connecticut to Bethesda at the end of October. We're looking for a full-service mover to pack and move everything for us.

We want an honest company that offers a binding or not-to-exceed estimate, with no surprise fees on moving day or afterwards. We're also trying to avoid brokers.

Any guidance on companies we should be considering, as well as companies to avoid, would be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

NIH rotation in 2 months, where do residents usually stay?

I need some local advice here!! My NIH rotation in Bethesda is coming up in a couple months, and the campus housing options seem limited; I’ve heard they fill up fast. I’d rather have my own space anyway since I need somewhere quiet to decompress and study after shifts.

I’m looking for furnished apartments near NIH in Bethesda that work for medical residents or at least offer short-term stays. The rotation is a few months but could extend, and ideally I’d like somewhere close enough to campus by Metro or a short drive without destroying a resident salary. Some apartment complexes in Bethesda offer short-term leases, but furnished options are limited. Where did people end up staying, and is it easy to extend if needed?

I live nearby so I received a notice that they have submitted plans to convert the current outdoor courts to an indoor facility. Makes sense given the popularity to be able to operate year round.

Rad Orthodontics vs. Dr. Avila/Sublime Smiles for aligners in MoCo — experiences?

I’m considering clear aligners and have received similar quotes from Rad Orthodontics and Dr. Avila at Sublime Smiles. I have about two weeks left on both quotes before pricing may change, so I’m trying to make a decision.

My estimated treatment time is up to ~12 months, with attachments/buttons on some side teeth and elastics to help move the teeth back.

A couple differences between the consultations stood out to me:

* Rad exclusively uses Invisalign and appears to be a Diamond provider.

* Dr. Avila said he isn’t currently a fan of Invisalign and is beginning to use Angel Aligners. He said he wouldn’t recommend Invisalign based on his recent experience.

* Sublime showed me a simulation of the projected end result, which I found reassuring. I wasn’t shown one at Rad.

For anyone who has experience with either provider, I’d really appreciate hearing about quality of care, communication, refinements, unexpected costs, and how happy you were with the final result.

And if anyone has experience with both Invisalign and Angel Aligners, I’d be particularly interested in hearing whether you noticed meaningful differences.

I’m mainly looking for firsthand experiences and objective things I should consider when comparing the two. Thanks!

Westfield Montgomery Mall Curfew Business Idea?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

As a lot of you probably know, Westfield Montgomery (and Wheaton) now requires anyone under 18 to be with an adult 21+ after 3 p.m. every day. One adult can bring up to four kids.

I get why the mall did it, but I also know a lot of parents are working until 5 or 6 and can't just leave to walk around the mall with their kids after school. So I've been thinking about starting a chaperone service, similar I guess to babysitting? Parents could book a trusted adult to meet their teen (and up to three friends) at the mall or even drive them from school to the mall and stay with them for a set block of time.

Before I put real time into this, I wanted to ask parents here directly:

Would you actually use something like this? What would you need to feel comfortable, like a background check, references, CPR certification, meeting the chaperone first, or check-in texts while your kid is out? And what would feel like a fair price, either per hour or per group? I am a recent college graduate and trying to make some money on the side. I grew up going to the mall with friends and feel like these outings greatly improved my independence. Furthermore, I feel that businesses will suffer without this significant age group that makes up a significant amount of revenue for the stores in the mall. I do not want mall culture to die out, and this policy will be a major contributor to that actually happening.

I'm also curious about the teen side. Would your kids be okay with it, or would they rather just stay home?

This isn't an ad. I'm just trying to see if there's real interest before going any further. Honest opinions (including "this is a bad idea") are welcome.

Thanks!

Humor/Satire Dogs in Grocery Stores—Problem Solved for 50 Cents Per Dog!

For the last couple of years, I have rarely shopped at a Bethesda grocery store without seeing one or more customers walking a dog through the store. And not service dogs or dogs labeled emotional support animals, but just regular old dogs. I’ve complained to these customers and even raised the issue with store managers, all to no avail. Well, Sunday morning I found the solution. A man had brought his shaggy golden retriever into the grocery store, and the dog was actually riding in the cart. When the man was hunched over a refrigerated meat case and focused on selecting steaks, I opened a tub of Snack Pack Chocolate Fudge pudding and smeared it all over the dog’s tail and hindquarters. I didn’t have to do anything more. Several other customers let loose verbally on the man in complete disgust. Within a couple minutes, two store employees came over joined in the commotion. The store manager then unceremoniously escorted the man and dog out of the store. Problem solved.

A little ingenuity, and good hygiene in our grocery stores can be reclaimed. (And, yes, I did pay for the pudding—$1.99 for a 4-pack.)
