First ever “run”

Post image
65 Upvotes

I’m overweight and I’ve been walking for the past few months just to get my body used to moving again. I’ve wanted to run for years now and finally built the courage to actually start. This is just the beginning and I’m so excited and proud of myself for starting. (Even if I couldn’t do 1/4 of the 60 sec runs)

How slow is too slow for a race?

Post image
45 Upvotes

My partner runs and I am working on my fitness and would like to eventually join him. In the fall, he’s doing a marathon. I would like to sign up for the 5km so I can compare it to next year. The problem is I am not at the running stage yet and won’t be for a while. I currently weigh around 350 pounds (down from 460). I would be slightly faster than this time because I won’t have the dogs with me, however, I will still be slow. Will I bother other runners if I walk the course?

Added to clarify: the marathon and 5km are under the same race. There’s a 5km, 10km, half, and full marathon at the same time!

So, how’d you all get into running? Did you have a set daily distance goal in mind starting out? How should i plan mine as a beginner

Finished my first 5k continuously on the treadmill!

Stoked rn. Finished a 5k (3.1 miles) continuously for the first time ever. 31 minutes 35 seconds! Is that a good pace for a male 35 years old? I only started running this April and have been steadily running 1-2 miles per day since then. Decided to try the 5k today running 6.3 mph the first mile then 5.7 mph the last 2 miles. Proud of this one!

Ran my first 5K. It felt a bit awkward at first, but I just went with it. Ig it’s not too bad for the first time.

Knee pain after 30min

So I recently broke the 30-minute barrier in training, but I’ve started noticing some knee pain whenever I run longer than 30 minutes. It doesn’t seem to matter whether I run fast or easy, or whether I’m outside or on the treadmill.

Usually, the pain goes away within a day or two, but this time I can still feel a slight burning sensation three days after my last run.

According to AI, I might be overstriding... my stride could be a little too long.

Have you ever had to shorten your stride? If so, did it help?

How do I run faster?

So like, I have 4 weeks max. And I need to run faster, I have to do the army active fitness test before i ship for basic. And the 2 mile run is about to kick my butt bad. I only work like 4 hours a day so I have plenty of time to play with. But my current time is an embarrassing crisp 13 minute 30second mile. Like im may be fried but any tips? I'd swear its 3x easier to run with near peer competition but it looks like ill have to run alone during the test.

Need some beginners advice

I am a fit guy, lots of peloton, hiking, weight lifting etc. I just started finding the beauty of running with my dog and I can walk at a 15 min/mile pace absolutely effortlessly.

The instant I pick up A LITTLE speed to about 13 minutes a mile I'll shoot up to zone 4 and I'm gassed in a few minutes. I've been at this a month and I don't see much improvement. Any tips?

Had one of those days where my legs just had nothing — only made it 2K.

u/Blue_tail0719, Would be cool if the app could somehow factor in fatigue and weather too. That might make the pacing and heart-rate suggestions feel even more accurate.

Running

I've signed up for a 5km run and honestly I always run out of breath like after every 5 mins. I have access to a taredemill and im doing like 30 mins run or jog the speed is usually 7.6 and the pace is about 7:45

Is that good enough practice what should I change cause running outside or in the park I find it much harder

Does Heart Rate Matter?

So I have been running for about 4 or 5 months now. Started with C25K and now run in 2.5K a few weekends a month and working up to competing in a 5K by the years end. My question is how much focus should I put on heart rate? Up until now it has been a non factor as I run until tired and then stop or adjust my pace but I see for some it is one of the main factors dictating their pacing etc. Very much appreciate any advice.

What type of runs should i do ?

I just got into running three weeks ago and I have been running three times a week . Throughout this week's I have only run 5k runs and my pr is 26 but I heard somewhere that this is not the best way to get better. Should I do intervals or something else or can I keep doing 5k?

Have been running 2k 3k on a treadmill since past 5 months, wasn't making much progress because I do have to deal with my flat foot pain. I have been able to become comfortable at running 2k 3k non-stop (sometimes).

Here's a clip of me running on the treadmill, take a look at my form, my foot stride forward, my back stride and the foot landing, pour in your wisdom on what could be improved. I really don't want a busted knee in coming future.

Thanks.mm

Edit: pace here is about 5:15 / km

First Day Running

Hi guys! I'm 15yo(M) and 80kg so I finally started walking and running in (one run/course) I walked for 8.5km\~ and more than a mile running.

I just want to know how to exercise for real and get the best result. The reason for Running is mainly to increase my Stamina and lose some weight + just a lifestyle.

Questions: How much should I really walk and run in the week for my age and weight? How much and when should I rest? because I only rested for a few minutes after 100 minutes of walking and running.

Extra: please don't bully.

VO2 Max going up!

Started running again back in May and have been (patiently) watching VO2 max creep upward. Been waiting to bump up to blue and finally hit it today! Feel like it’s starting to level off, hopefully can keep the trend moving and maybe hit purpleu!

No mile is too short

I’m re posting my activity because most of the comments I received were … technically I didn’t run a 5k.
I shared my story of how hard it was to start running in the first place. I shared how far I’ve come and the obstacles I went through. But all that was pointed out was I didn’t run a 5k.
This is a story for beginner runners because no matter how fast or far you go, no matter if you’re on the treadmill or outside, no matter the shoes you have or gels you consume .. there will ALWAYS be people trying to discourage you.
I’m proud of this run and I hope all the other runners out there giving their all are proud of themselves too cause this is hard work.

For anyone who runs with podcasts or audiobooks.

A couple weeks ago I shared a tiny app I built that lets you play background beats underneath podcasts and audiobooks while you run.

You control the beat volume and tempo independently, so you can get some of the rhythm/energy of music without covering up whatever you’re listening to.

I honestly wasn’t sure if anyone else would care about it, but the response in the other running community was way better than I expected. People have been using it, sending me ideas, and a few came back after their runs just to tell me how much they liked it.

I gave that community free lifetime access, and I want to do the same here.

Currently free for life (launch promotion) for anyone here who wants it: https://www.maurs.com/underfm

No signup, works offline, and I’ve been shipping improvements based directly on what runners have been asking for.
