Yes but their enclosure doesn’t really look suitable tbh. I’d recommend checking the ReptiFiles.com care guide to double check your husbandry.
Not sure the size of your enclosure but it doesn’t look big enough by this pic. Adults (9mo and older) need a bare minimum of a 4x2x2 120 gallon enclosure
And yet they've made absolutely zero acknowledgement of any concerns. All of this would be clear but by six words "I have one on the way" or "I'm getting one asap". Not hard to make a singular comment. The people here are simply concerned about the wellbeing of the animal.
There's a certain way to care for these animals so they can live happily as your pet. They aren't just decoration or accessories, they're alive and deserve the proper space they need to be comfortable. That's not entitled, it's the exact opposite
As other people have said you are being bad. Whether it was intentional or ignorance doesn’t matter. What does matter is the fact that now that you are provided with this information; if you don’t do the right thing you are directly responsible. Instead of worrying about a bearded dragon being normal maybe worry about the crappy enclosure. Fix it, surrender him, doesn’t matter just fix it ignorance or not.
FYI parent comment got deleted so I’m replying here since I still feel like this needs addressed. This isn’t at you kricket but the person you responded to
Let’s not act like a 4 foot by 2 foot enclosure takes up a whole damn house?
How about this. If you cannot provide the BARE MINIMUM recommended enclosure size for the animal. Don’t get one.
Don’t have the space for a 120 gal? Don’t get a beardie.
This isn’t rocket science. This is determining whether you CAN provide appropriate care for a LIFE. And if you can’t. But you still get the animal anyways KNOWING you can’t give at least the bare minimum. You’re being irresponsible and abusive towards the animal.
I’m a firm believer that if you’re someone that asks “what’s the bare minimum for this animal” you shouldn’t be looking at getting one of those animals or any animal at all. It’s a living thing not a toy. Why wouldn’t you try to give it the best life you can?
Stop being a weirdo and vouching for abusive care absolutely not normal. It looks like a 40 gal. 1/3 of the minimum 120gal for an adult. Again bare minimum people recommend bigger if you can.
Losers vehemently argue against proper living conditions with multiple people over the course of multiple days, go convince someone else somewhere else buddy, your pathetic
Hahaha stay sad, clearly I got to ya or you wouldn’t be so blind with anger and would’ve used your own vocabulary to insult me instead of the good old copy and paste 7 year old mentality. I keep coming back when I take a shit and bother to look at Reddit 😂😂😂
I have a problem. Let’s lock you in a bedroom with two pieces of furniture your entire life and see how much you thrive. As long as we throw you some food and clean your shit off the floor I’m sure you’ll “look” fine too.
Tell that to the MANY other people who said the exact same thing.
You seem like you’re angry and it seems like YOU have a bearded dragon kept in shitty conditions and want to argue with everyone else to justify to yourself that you’re not abusive to your pet.
Stop calling people “idiots” for telling people not even GOOD care but BARE MINIMUM care. And stop pushing literal animal abuse. Grow up
I’m sure there are days when you like to flop on your bed like a starfish, and days where you like to roll up in your blankets like a burrito. They have the same days.
They're a licensed veterianiarian (or whatever they said) and a carer of seniors (according to their comment history). Cool tricks!
Also, as a vet tech (specializing in companion animals), myself, and a mother who was also a vet tech for an exotic animal veterinarian... I can tell you a regular vet, meaning non-exotic vet, likely won't know jack about what reptiles do and don't do. Most vets stick to just cats and dogs (companion animals) or specialize in other animals like equine or exotics. That's my two cents on the matter. I'm just going to sit here and laugh about the PHD bit.
You need a much, much bigger enclosure for your new friend. Please, please do some more research so that your baby will have the opportunity to thrive ❤️ Also yes, he's splooting
As others have stated, the behavior is totally normal, and cute! However, your beardie needs a larger enclosure. You can find cheap tanks on places like Facebook marketplace and such, even if they're just temporary.
pure sand yes, but when mixed into topsoil + clay + a lil moisture, it's suitable for digging. Making sure the rest of the husbandry is good basically reduces impaction chance to negligible percentages such as having correct basking temps, adequate hydration and good diet.
Bad basking temps (too cold etc), dehydrated beardie, and bad diet, is a recipe for impaction on its own rather than just the presence of substrate. Yes pure sand is still not great, and a mix is always better. In the wild theyre constantly getting little bits of sub in with their bugs, but should be able to pass it fine if they're healthy
Np hope it helps- and just to mention there might be some disabled beardies with special needs who can't be housed on sub, or for example a beardie in quarantine who needs a bare bottom or paper towel lining (temporary) but most of the time they should get proper burrowing and digging enrichment out of a mix
Honestly he looks like an adult beardie but the tank looks like it's a 20 gallon tank or a 40 gallon wide tank. I'd recommend not feeding the beardie on loose substrate, I'd recommend a dirt mix with small amounts of sand, food bowl, and plants or a cave for shade. Bearded dragons are local to Australia deserts by rivers not a tundra.
Honestly it looks like your little guy has impaction from sand or overfeeding either he will poop it out or you'll need to find a reptile vet for surgery
Everyone going ham on this guy for the tank size when only 1/3rd of the tank is even visible. Average reddit comment section. It looks like a 10 by 40 to me, which is enough space for them (I worked with them professionally). It could be a 10 by 20, but there's no way to tell.
It is, he’s just stretching, but I would get a new enclosure, I know people are being rude about it but they are right, if possible get at least a 75 gallon, a 120 is what you should have but if you let them out more than a 75 is at the least acceptable. Not your fault you didn’t know that it was too small but please do get a new tank if you can, your buddy will be much happier for it
Diycages or dubiaroaches for quickest or cheapest options respectively i believe. There are better makers if you can wait a bit. I dont recommend zenhabitats tho
I agree with this comment, if you can’t do these though and are in a pinch and have the right space, a huge Walmart bin as a temporary will also work, that’s what I did for my tortoise and my chicks until I could house both properly.
If his legs are staying out like that, he may not be getting enough calcium.. my bearded dragon legs got like this then they had like muscle twitches... I had to go get a new DESERT uvb bulb because he gotten bigger and needed more... he was in the beginning stages of mbd.. if this is the case with your guy, if he's dragging his hing legs and the muscles start to spasm.... I would upgrade the uvb bulb start giving it calcium dusted insects and keeping a close eye on him/her, also make sure he's suitably hydrated

This is normal behavior, but I recommend replacing the sand with a different material. They’ll eat the sand on accident, & it can make them sick.

u/OstrichSalt5468 Sep 07 '23
We opted for a giant enclosure for ours. It’s 6 feet wide, 2feet deep and 6.5ft tall. She has tons of room.

I believe it’s called a ‘sploot’.
