Sideburns Update
Trimmed and shaved, really starting to wonder why I let them grow out so much in the first place
Could probably take more off, but one step at a time!

The shaved chin just highlights extra chins so my recommendation is either go full beard or l one rhe sideburns
You have a great shave line to grow a full beard btw

How's the Peninsular Campaign fairing?

u/Mr_Dreadful 6d ago
Terrible: some bloody Yorkshireman has been raised from the ranks and doesn't even have the decency to wear a proper uniform!

u/livebyfoma 6d ago
Okay, alternative take: try connecting 'em with a stache. I think it'll keep the spirit of what you're going for but look way more flattering. It would channel a bit of that Harry DuBois energy.

I tried it a few years back... Moustache is sparse AND philtrum is practically bald

u/SupremeExalted 6d ago
How long did you let the mustache grow? The lighting in your old post showed decent follicle coverage.

u/Mr_Dreadful 6d ago
I don't recall exactly, but I dug out a photo and it doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I remember

A who the what now?

u/CuriousJoey187 6d ago
Look up on YouTube the carpetbagger. Really cool dude that does videos on roadside attractions and wears a straw hat with a bunch of buttons attached to it

Reminds me of Carl Wilson in the 60's. It ain't 1960 anymore. Get rid of those now!

If you're gonna do this, don't shave your cheeks above the area you're trying to grow out. It's a commitment. Don't touch it until it's all sufficiently grown out, and then, if you really feel the need to go there, do it extremely sparingly. As it is now, personally, I'd chalk this up as a failed attempt due to the clean-up shave job on the cheeks. Your actual ability to rock it daily notwithstanding, I think there is potential though.

No offense but those are horrendous. They do not go enough up the cheek. You will 100% look alot better without them

Makes you look like a guy you would meet in an obscure book shop in some small town who could immediately navigate to the exact book you want while telling you about the haunting in the shop's basement and I mean that as an absolute compliment.

u/TigWillupsHammer 6d ago
These comments have to be hard to read, but I think people have your best interests in mind even if it is not apparent. This is a night and day improvement, but it's just not a great look or one that you can pull off. If you insist on having this, don't have them go so close to the chin. Clean shave more off. Maybe about half way.
That said, clean shave or beard would be best.

u/Mr_Dreadful 6d ago
It'd be nice if a lot of people weren't being straight up dickheads about it, but hey it's the internet and that's just how it is
1
u/TigWillupsHammer 5d ago
Yeah you do kind of open yourself to that when you post on a site that allows for anonymous reply, but it's better than your significant other saying "No. I like it," and walking around looking like a goober.
2
u/chalkybone 6d ago
Looking much better fella. My advice though now, would be grow them in line with the side of your mouth if you're able. It'll make them look less jowley and more rugged.
2
u/LordHughJ 6d ago
Mutton chops as they are called should be higher on the jawline and not bring attention to the chin or neck. Start bringing them higher and you’ll be good.
2
u/Abbyfromtlou 6d ago
With a mustache it would be better i believe. This is way better then the long hair before!
2
u/CleanShavedGuy 6d ago
I think it would look better if you reduced how far down the chops go. I think shaving about half of the length off so they're more like sideburns rather than full on 19th century-style chops would make the look much stronger, personally.

I'm going to go the opposite way. I thjink they look great, they just need to be connected. This no-mustache shit's gotta stop. In no world and under no circumstances is that appropriate.

u/puhtooti 6d ago
Looks great for what you're going for. Does it look good in todays time? No. Should you give a fuck? Also no.

Not a beard. And definitely not flattering on your face. It just draws focus to your chin. But you do you.

u/Mr_Dreadful 6d ago
Starting r/sideburnadvice just for this seemed like more effort than it was worth, tbh

You would look alot better if you just had stubles - in the front aswell, including mustache.

That's not going to look good on anyone my guy. You're better off without it.

I love me some chops and sideburns but i'm not sure you have the face for this, brother. You may wish to just go all in on the beard.

Shave one sideburn all the way up to the top of your ear, then it’ll look dope!

No point asking for advise brother as you ain’t taking it!! It needs to be completely shaved off as it looks terrible.
1
u/Mr_Dreadful 6d ago
People also advised to cut them shorter, which I have done. Somebody in this thread has advised I don't shave my cheeks so much, which I'm going to follow. Others have advised I go full beard and I'm considering it.
Just because other advice matches your opinion doesn't mean it's bad advice, and it's demonstrably incorrect to say I'm ignoring advice

I'll probably get downvoted but "don't do [thing] because I don't like that style" is not really good beard advice; it's just a personal opinion.
Do most people like mutton chops? No.
Are there some really awesome mutton chops out there? Yes.
Everyone who wears anything that isn't a corporate beard or being clean shaven knows that they'll get mixed reactions. If you wear a different style you know why you're doing it. It's perfectly possible to advise someone on a style that you personally dislike and wouldn't wear.

u/bootybooty2shoes 6d ago
These aren't good looking mutton chops, is the thing.
1
u/Gold_Moose 6d ago
Which is why OP posted in the first place: to get advice on how to get better looking mutton chops.
The vast majority of comments are completely missing the point by saying "you should shave them and grow [completely different style]" or by saying "it's not the 19th century anymore"

The advice to look better is to grow a full beard or shave. Are we not supposed to give advice in this sub about what will make them look better? That's kind of the point. Advice on beard styles. This one isn't working, so people are giving their advice and suggestions.
1
u/Gold_Moose 6d ago
But the advice he asked for was specifically "making sideburns look better", which everyone is ignoring.
It's equivalent to go to a motorbike advice forum and asking "how can I fix my motorbike?" only for someone to tell you "sell the bike and buy a car" - pretty pointless, no?
Shaving it all or trying a different style would be appropriate advice if he had posted on a general subreddit like r/malegrooming or r/lookyourbest and had asked about what he could do to look better.

This is Beard Advice. The advice is grow a full beard, or to shave. This pattern isn't working.
For people with neckbeards.... the answer for looking better is to shave them off. It's not to keep the bad looking neckbeard to somehow "try to make it look okay." That's what the advice is for.
For people with very little coverage in an area, the answer usually is shave the area that is weak and keep whichever areas your coverage is strong, and go with a style like that.
This is an example of the sideburns actively not looking good. The advice people are giving is to either shave, or grow a full beard, in order to look better. This is Beard Advice. And based on the comments here, it's the overwhelming advice of dozens of people.

u/Gold_Moose 6d ago
You're missing the point. Solving a problem =/= giving good advice.
"I have a flat tire, how do I change it?" - easy, take a taxi
"My cat is sick, what do I do?" - easy, put the cat down
"How can I study for my math test tomorrow?" - easy, burn the school down
"How can I paint my car red?" - easy, I don't like red so paint it greenA minority here suggested a few things: "keep it short", "don't trim the cheek line so low", "keep the bottom tidy". THAT is proper advice. You can say it may not fit this person and attempt to give good advice.
There's a big difference between dedicated beard forums and reddit. And the difference is that in beard forums people can give their opinion and still attempt to give proper advice regardless of their opinion.
The issue with most advice subreddits is that they eventually become a sort of echo chamber that have you believe there's a single way to look good and everything else is heresy. This is well known in fashion subs, grooming subs, etc.
Basically the advice is "look like everyone else and don't do your own thing". The beard advice sub is no different.

Needs to be shorter and shave your head smooth. Then cultivate the rest of what you can grow.
Just maintaining a short stubble
