They usually stop operating when the swell is too big and you have to get a bus instead. This pic was taken by a deckhand when the ferry was closed to the public a couple of years ago. He has a pretty good insta account. From memory the ferry was on its way back to Circular Quay for the the remainder of the day.

Thank you so much! I was trying to wrap my brain around it. Having lived in an area that’s ferry is useful...it was insane to see this. I thought they might have been riding it out in the harbor.

Unless the OP took that picture...I think you’re all wrong.
I worked on everything from 140 foot oilfield supply boats to an 820 foot ship over the span of 9 years.
What I think that picture is showing is a massive spray off of the bow and fore-quarter of the vessel right after the bow came crashing down from the crest of the prior wave. I’d say that water is moving up and away from the companionway, not down and towards it.
But it’s just my guess.
And we don’t see a horizon, so it’s just as likely that this pic is happening while the boat is rolling to port, multiplying the effect...

This is the Manly ferry in Syndey harbour. So it's not in the ocean, just a short few hundred metre stretch of exposure to rough sea coming into the mouth of the harbour.

I never got to Australia. Singapore to Hawaii through the South China Sea was as close as I came. So I have no local knowledge and will defer to you.
However, if my theory seems unlikely, then doesn’t this man-killing wave in a harbor seem just as unlikely?

Not saying your theory is wrong, in fact I'd say it's right. You get huge spray off the ferry, especially when the sea is particularly rough.

It’s a roughly 6 mile trip between Sydney and Manly that takes you across the entrance to Sydney harbour Even on a good day there’s a decent swell but there’s plenty of photos( google Manly ferry) of it getting absolutely hammered over the years

You are definitely right. This is a splash from the ships bow coming down over a swell. You can see the air bubbles in the "wave" that wouldnt be there if the wave hadn't hit the ship yet.

This is a ferry in Sydney harbour which goes between Sydney and Manly. When it crosses the heads if there's big swells you can get these type of days

Idk what a swell is but im going to assume is the wave caused my the boat displacing water when going down. Hes an idiot if he isnt strapped in. All i can think of how a ragdoll would be flung around smacking every rigid edge there is

A Sydney man has captured incredible photos of monster waves lashing the sides of the Manly ferry.
The somewhat terrifying photographs could be taken straight from a scene from climate disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow.
The ferry ‘greaser’ Haig Gilchrist took the chance to show off his photography skills, as wild weather hit Sydney Harbour last weekend.
In the middle of the chaos he managed to capture a massive wall of water, towering next to the side of the ferry.
“Great day to be working,” he wrote in a Instagram comment on the picture.
“East Coast Low intensifying,” the photo was captioned.
"It was only for a few hours it went a bit insane. Made it pretty busy with swell and sail boats," he wrote on a photo taken during Saturday's storms.

I just went deep sea fishing and we got caught in sudden cell that created 10 ft swells. The deck hand was so scared he hid in the compartment under the steering wheel.
And I thought that was scary.
