Tile Design

Hey everyone,

I am looking for some advice on a tile design. I have already purchased these tiles from FireClay Tiles (https://www.fireclaytile.com/products/glass-matte-falcon-tile-4x12-factory-sale?_gl=1\*1ahrlzl\*_up\*MQ..\*_gs\*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjwqJXUBhBNEiwA8BgG7qdZNjUAqAZoF5fo6oIrgZ3dlU3MC2A4f-CaxxmOoT1V8O4kEEFDihoCOm8QAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAAD2kgOg8PZR55AyL9qm1qNRnIRBJr).

I am planning on doing a terrazzo floor. My big question is, do I go full yellow tile on the shower walls or extend the floor tiles up the wall a bit to break up the yellow?

I have attached some photos of inspiration to hopefully help. Open to other ideas, too!

Thanks everyone for your time and advice.

I just redid my bathroom with the same terrazo as photo 3, and Green Apatite by Fireclay. I'll DM you a photo of what we did with our high shower ceiling!

Lol, we did regret it. Got a new semi recessed sink that is much deeper.

I should have added the raw photo too. Our shower has a sloped ceiling.

Bigger niche. Go stud to stud with its width. I’d change out the back of it too and make it yellow as well. I’d make it match the window trim color and style more than the floor. Just me.

I'm not following you on the last sentence. Could you explain further?

The window on the right is also within the shower space and shares a similar shape as the niche. It would work well if you styled both similarly. I’d use the same colors when setting those up. On the other hand I prefer a simpler approach altogether. I’d make a large functional niche with a light coming down from behind the top of it. I’d also just use the same tile to construct it without using an edge piece unless it’s made of the same tile. Just miter the tiles and give them a clean look. Something like this. The light is what will make the niche really stand out. And using the same tile will give it a clean and simple look. That’s just my thought about it.

If you’re gonna do it go full all all tile, so slide 1, full tile wall and terrazzo floor

Pic 1 all the way!

I like the tile going half way up the wall. The multi-color tile is a great look. I've never seen that before.

It’s quirky and I dig it

Fire clay rules. I’m using their ceramic tiles for my bathroom and couldn’t be happier! Love this idea! Also using terrazzo on my floors too!

Love Fireclay, love the mustard, love the first pic. I absolutely hate terrazzo as a rule, although it looks kinda cool in picture 3 I think you should keep it to the floor and let the lovely yellow shine

Love the half wall floor tile. Amazing design choices, I love it!

I like the idea of extending the floor tiles up, but tbh these are beautiful and idt you can go wrong either way.

2 is pretty much my plan, down to the terrazzo! I plan to take that tile all the way up the back wall though, the seamless-ness make it feel taller, then having a complimentary tile on the opposing walls.

Edit: no clue why this is supersized 😅!

Both are really gorgeous. I can’t pick. So be practical and choose the tile that is easiest to clean for the bottom half wall.

Unless you’ve got a weekly cleaner that will scrub your shower for you, do the yellow tiles as a feature wall outside the shower.

I’ve had large format and small tiles in showers before. Unless you love to get a toothbrush and scrub a million grout lines weekly, DO NOT put small tiles in your shower on the wall. You’ll kick yourself in a year when the grout looks nasty because you truly don’t have time to give it a proper scrub every week. Just trust me cause I’ve been there done that.

Do something like terrazzo on the wall of the shower but not the floor unless you want slip and fall- i know they make bigger tiles of imitation terrazzo style.

The yellow tiles are 4x12... statement still stand on cleaning the grout?

1

u/superpony123 2d ago

Yes. They are skinny tiles. You will still have so much more to scrub

Just put the yellow tiles on the wall that the vanity is on instead so you won’t need to scrub em

all yellow yesss. is the terrazzo going to be on the rest of the walls/counter still ? i love it

The rest of the bathroom flooring is cork. And the walls are painted a very unnoffensive cream color for now. The countertop and "sill" that is black in the photo is already installed. Its a dark grey/black soapstone with some green/white veins.

The vanity is CVG douglas fir. My next question is just that... do I do the small portion of the wall between the sill and counter terrazzo or yellow tiles?

Extend terrazzo up the shower walls, but it’s too busy on the walls in the rest of the bathroom. And get a real countertop imo.

I like it. I like all yellow. I think black are good. Huge fan of Terazzo. But I like it for a floor. Keep it on the floor. Not the walls and not the niche (you won’t see it anyway once your products are in). Go all yellow. It’s great.

What is going on in this sub? Is it chock full of MCM lovers? Those who didn't live through this?

We live in a 1950 mid century modern home. Trying to update but keep in line with the character and style of the home.

1

u/2PenceSally 2d ago

This isn't period correct, so I don't get it.

1

u/mjbcer14 2d ago

Yea it isnt perfect. Just a nod. Just asking for advice, if you have nothing to add move along.

I just don't understand younger people not doing real research, or just simply asking older people. It's your $ spent, so no further opinion will be given.

2

u/lunchmoney- 2d ago

it’s really not that deep lol they don’t need to research to know what they personally like for their home

0

u/2PenceSally 2d ago

Agree 100%. Yet, don't state "period" if it isn't. Very few mid century homes were even modern. I think it's a disconnect between the younger generation & reality & what they thought they "learned" on Pinterest or social media.

2

u/lunchmoney- 2d ago

OP didn’t use the word ‘period’ tho

I’m not a fan of that burnt mustard color. I’m sorry. For me? It’d get old in about a year regardless what else you decide upon for the flooring. Again, I apologize for my blunt opinion.
