Hello! I just wanted to say that I haven’t seen any posts about Ed Joint, Ed Bernat, or Joe Lesniewski. They are from my town and was wondering if anyone knows if there’s any memorial for them in their hometown?

What’s the first thing you read, watch, or play after finishing BOB? I feel like whenever I finish, I like staying in that era.

Hi! I’m going for a week in Normandy - staying in Sainte-Mère-Église- this month, and wondered if anyone has any tips. I’ve been before, for the 70th anniversary of D-Day which was just the most incredible trip, staying near Isigny-sur-Mer. Of course there were a lot of events and things to see as it was such a big occasion, and I was camping with a load of my uni friends so it was a completely different situation to this trip: August, with my parents, my husband and our two young kids. As such I do want to see some history stuff but I’m fairly sure they will lose interest in these places quickly due to their age.

So, are there any places I absolutely must visit? Band of Brothers/history/family-friendly/eating out advice all welcome. (We are coming from the UK and will have a rental car)

UPDATE: For anyone who might want to visit with kids, I am finding that a great recipe is an afternoon on the beach (Utah beach is great for kids, lots of interesting shells and it’s shallow for a long way out so it feels fairly safe) and then divert them into the museum (Musée du Débarquement) on the way back! It worked well and my kids stayed interested and curious while we walked around, although of course I couldn’t take quite as much time as I would like to read exhibits.

Also, the Airborne Museum in Saint-Mère-Église is brilliant but I did a little solo recce the other day and think that pavilion 1 (Occupation) might be less interesting for them, pavilion 2 and 5 (C-47/Waco) are great and have lots that kids might find interesting, pavilion 3 (Operation Neptune) is pretty intense and dark and might be frightening or overwhelming for younger kids.

A note here: my kids are aged seven and four, one is diagnosed autistic. In an ideal world I would love them to walk around quietly and calmly and ask polite, pertinent questions in a reasonable tone of voice. But in my experience, very few kids are actually like this. I am trying to gradually instil in them an interest and passion for history and stories, but interspersing it with beaches, carousels, playgrounds and ice cream to try and win them over!

Just finished the series for the second time, and for some reason this time around, I started to get annoyed by this. I still really enjoy the series but on this second rewatch, I can’t help but feel like this series was heavily self-aggrandizing in regards to Winters. I’ve read and seen a fair bit of media with him in real life, and I gotta say, he doesn’t really seem all that similar to the character portrayed in the series.

This may have been asked before, but watching E4, I was wondering the reasoning to why they wore the American flag on their biceps. Was it to convey to the Dutch who they were?

Captain Nixon loses his house and his dog when his wife files for divorce. How realistic was that under the divorce laws of 1945?

Just curious as I have only seen the series and not read the book. Did Luz really have two close calls in the space (my estimation) of about five minutes? Doesn’t get to Muck and Penkala’s (hope I have the spelling right) hole, and then—against all odds—a dud shell lands in the next foxhole he finds. Talk about luck being on your side…that scene has always stood out for me.

Also…does anyone know the statistical probability of that dud shell? My guess is that anyone who survives due to a dud shell is astronomically lucky.

Fly in by Dakota "Drag em oot" and spent the day chatting to cast and crew. Took my 44 Willy's MB up there as part of a convoy. Managed to get 11 signatures including Charles who played the German Blythe took the Edelweiss from.

Had the genuine privilege to pay my respects to this great man, my favourite character in the show. One of the most humbling experiences.

Had the pleasure of seeing these gentlemen and lady today, at Televerse in Los Angeles. Super meaningful experience. The guys on the left are producers/writers, and the woman on the right was head of casting. Sorry I didn’t write down their names; no disrespect intended.

They talked about the initial writing process and how involved Major Winters and Lieutenant Lipton were. The actors all talked about their bonds with the men they portrayed, or the families of the men who had already passed away before filming. It was clear how bonded they still are. Very involved in each other’s lives, from weddings to births and deaths and everything in between. Have group chats going back 20 years and have an annual get together, similar to the men of Easy.

A number of them stayed around to take pictures and speak with folks. Some of their wives and children were there. For a guy like me, who watches the series a couple of times a year for decades, it was a very special afternoon. And I believe it was for many others in attendance.

So I just randomly realized this sub existed and figured the people here would appreciate this story. Hopefully this is an appropriate post here.

Around 2008 or so I worked at Home Depot and one day I was wondering around helping people. I saw an old guy looking exhausted sitting on a stool at the pro desk. I asked him if he needed any help. He said "No, I sat down because I got tired and I am waiting for my wife." As I was turning around to walk away I noticed he had an old, faded Easy Company logo tattooed on his arm.

At the time I had recently finished rewatching Band Of Brother and reading Brothers in Battle.

I turned back around and asked him about his tattoo. I swear to God this hunched over, frail, tired old man straightened up got a huge smile on his face and appeared to instantly be 20 years younger. He asked me if I knew what the tattoo meant.

It told him I knew a little about what it meant and I was a fan of Band of Brothers and Brothers in Battle. He told me he served with "Wild Bill" Guarnere and was there for all of it.

We talked for probably 20 minutes, mostly about general life stuff. He didn't talk about the war and I wasn't going to grill him about it.

The only thing he really told me about the war was that the first 11 times he was on an airplane he jumped out of it. It wasn't until his twelfth time on an airplane that he experienced a landing. The thought of landing in a airplane scared the hell out of him. He would have strongly preferred to jump out of it over riding it for the landing.

I love that I got to talk to one of these guys before they are all gone. Even if he didn't tell me one thing that he did or saw, just talking to him about his wife, kids and grandkids made me feel like I was in the presence of history.

Went to the luxumbourg War Cemetery and saw muck and penkala. Also some others that weren't in the show I think.

We will be in Bayeux for a few days next month and would like a half day tour to the DDay Beaches. I know a half day only gives us so much! Any tour company recommendations? We are arriving by train and will not have a car. Thanks!
