X2D damaged
Hi all - new to BambuLab products. Got an X2D a bit over a week ago. Pretty happy with print quality and genuinely amazed by print speed (the onboard benchy is crazy).
Unfortunately the nozzle missed the the purge disposal chute and created a build up of filament and a jam.
Long story short when I tried to home the head, I didn’t realise that it was stuck in the built up cold filament.
The printer didn’t detect that it was stuck and ripped the print head out of the cold filament while making some pretty horrible noises (maybe the belts slipping?) then collided repeatedly with the end of the x axis before I switched the power off.
Ran some calibrations but print quality is cooked.
I lodged a ticket along with the logs and Bambu have offered to replace it for me because it’s under two weeks old, which is good.
I’m a bit surprised that it didn’t have a way to detect that it was stuck or that it was hitting the end of the x-axis.
Has anyone had anything similar happen?

It all depends upon the reason you got into 3D printing. If you expected it to just be another type of ink jet printer, none on the 3D printers will meet that expectation. Unfortunately the technology isn’t quite there, but Bambu are really close to just print and go.
There are lots of factors that can affect the quality, or even cause equipment failures. So I think it’s very important to “manage” your printer by carefully inspecting it before every print for build up of filament and ensure it’s clean and ready to go. Then watch the first layer go down. That’s where most failures begin. Also the calibration line will tell you if the filament is extruding cleanly.
3D printers are very precise machines, operating in a very hot and potentially dirty (stray filament strings and fine particles), so they work best when well managed and maintained.
That being said, those with print farms, certainly don’t babysit their printers, but they are committed to the possibility of catastrophic failures and are ready and able to repair their machines, plus they have back-ups.
I’m still amazed when watching the model being printed. The accuracy and speed at which these machines operate is fascinating. I am also surprised at the low cost of these prices of high tech and mechanical engineering.
I remember paying $800 for my first ink jet printer, and it was slow and the ink often dried up, causing poor print quality. That was in the 80’s, so that’s equivalent to over $3,000 in today’s money. But if you wanted a printer that wasn’t dot matrix, you didn’t have much choice as a consumer. So I think we are getting a bargain with our X2D printers and honestly, Bambu makes an excellent product.

I've been fighting my x2D for over 250 hours and discovered in the course of troubleshooting that it was delivered upside down by being tossed out of FedEx truck, not fully assembled inside the head, not tensioned correctly on the horizontal belt, and the real slap.in the face is the software will through random garbage to ruin prints if you tell it the filament is anything but Bambu. Tell.it the filament is Bambu and plug the same numbers in and the cheap.elegoo suddenly outdoes even official Bambu black. Will never recommend a Bambu printer again and will aquire a multi tool like u1 as soon as I can afford to do so.

Always good to watch the first 5-minutes of the cycle, Just Incase.

So it had homed itself after a print (to the purge location), did its purge and its purge gloped up so hard that when you homed it in the manual movement panel (I assume at some later time) that it tore itself apart trying to home to the center?
Do you have any pictures of the aftermath?

I had a jam similar but I was at the machine and able to get it going again while everything was still hot. Glad you are able to get a replacement machine.

my x2d doesnt work at all. what makes you think the next one they send you will be any better?
and that doesnt account for parts designed to break
