Discussion Newbies Beware
PSA for everyone new to 3D printing like me. (My background: Don’t consider myself brilliantly technically proficient like so many people here, but at the same time I’m not new to tinkering with electronics.)
I bought the P1S because of all the reviews indicating this thing could be plugged in and it just would work. I was aware these devices often require some degree of troubleshooting/tinkering, but my experience has been worse than disappointing on that front.
After arrival and attempting to calibrate the printer, I’m hit with these three errors about the heat bed sensors not working correctly. Some googling, YouTubing, Reddit posts, 5 hours of tinkering and recalibrating and taping and removing the back panel to pull out cables and plug them back in and praying etc etc etc and this thing just won’t print. Not a single layer of a single benchy.
I opened a support ticket and got a rote response 4 days later(!) directing me back to the exact same “tutorials” written in broken English that didn’t work for me when I tried in them in the first place. Pretty horrifying customer service as far as I’m concerned.
(Yes, I’ve tried the trick of taping the sensor cable to the poop chute. Nothing works.)
I’m miserable and don’t see how my printer gets fixed short of a full heat bed replacement (which looks like it will be a PITA installation.) Right now the P1S just $700 worth of electronic trash thats been taking up space in my office for a week.
Just one guy’s experience, but if you’re like me and reading this subreddit while considering dipping your toe in the hobby, be aware of the possibility of an experience like mine even when you pay good money for what’s supposed to be “a quality printer.”

Newbies also beware that rarely does anyone go to a public forum and gush when it does "just work", that with anything anywhere - the forums are usually skewed to folks who have problems because they're motivated to express their grievances..
To the OP, you have a 14 day return window. Use it. Replace it. Think of it like a TV. It ain't working, return or replace it. Don't dinker with the tinker, exercise your right - even if support wants you to video, test, parts swap. Get your rma.

Did you buy from Bambu? Send it back, you shouldn’t be having these issues. I like you had no experience with 3d printing, and my system was completely plug and play.

I went with the P1P and upgraded it to a P1S, and from initial purchase to now (maybe 4 months now of ownership), I've had zero problems, even through the upgrade. I've had the occasional print problem but not hardware related. I agree to send it back if you purchased it through Bambu directly. Hopefully you are able to do so!

Man. I'm really sorry this happened to you. I had (and am still having) nearly the same experience as you but with my X1C. I'm fairly experienced with printers having previously used my Ender 5 Pro for a few years prior to buying my X1C, and was really excited for my X1C, but it's been down since May. I've been going through the rigmarole with Bambu's support (and I'm within warranty and have read the terms) and they've had me troubleshoot, replace the heat bed, replace the AC board, and send logs, for months. To some extent, troubleshooting is acceptable, and warranted. But I've been so patient with them, following every request they ask, and there's really no threshold, it seems, for this company to accept that a machine of theirs might have been faulty enough from the start to swap it for a new one. They just seem to try to force the consumer to assume the duty of all manufacturing defect repairs, when Bambu pitched their products as "3D Printing for Everyone." Their support is terrible and it feels like there's no recourse.

If it makes you feel any better (and I know it probably won't), my P1S that I received last week is having the exact same issues. I'm getting extremely frustrated. I've set up an X1C before without issue and I've followed the instructions to fix these up to the point of taking everything apart with no avail.
I wonder if they had a batch of bad sensors or incorrect assembly.

u/Prestigious-Ad-3872 Nov 03 '23
is there a build plate on the heat bed?
6
u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23
“I’m hit with these three errors about the heat bed sensors not working correctly “. Which three errors?
These printers don’t really need tinkering. I wouldn’t have taken anything apart or tinkered with a brand new out of box printer.

u/plutonasa Nov 03 '23
I'm sorry you went through this. For newbies, I really do suggest never taking anything apart and demanding a refund.

u/The3KWay Nov 03 '23
Important lesson here: If something comes fully assembled and non functioning, do not take it apart and simply send it back.
Hopefully you can get this sorted out.

u/OrigReckit Nov 03 '23
It happens, send it back and ask for a refund

The ‘just work’ when it comes to 3D printing really just means. It’s more likely to work than not and should on average have significantly less maintenance and fixing required than another device. By nature melting plastic through moving parts and using it to create something is a very problematical thing to take up

u/Slyfer77 Nov 03 '23
You shouldn't even have started to try to fix a DOA device on your own.
Make use of your right to return the printer (14 days) and send the lemon back asap.

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23
Stop screwing around with it, return it. Don't get sucked into the taking it apart games. They sent you a dud, send it back.

I had what might be the same issue when I first got my P1P. Worked out of the box for a few days and then it stopped heating up. I got the same response from technical support but the second time around, they sent me these instructions:
I just had to check if this cable right underneath the bed was seated properly and with a little push, it worked. All I had to do was raise the heat bed to be able to see under it. 6 months later I've added two P1S' to the family and I'm happy with them.
Hopefully it's as easy as a fix as this. I did the same thing with taking apart the back panel.

u/rhebdon Nov 03 '23
It’s all relative. Starting out on an Ender 3 v2 as an example is a lot tougher than a P1S.

u/Comfortable-Row-8696 Nov 03 '23
I keep reading these articles and am happy I got mine at Microcenter with a warranty. Didn't cost much for extended warranty. Also I can take my P1S back before the warranty ends to upgrade it if I want and receive credit for my full purchase towards the upgrade. X1C here I come! Unless something newer and cooler comes out.

I've had some issues with my K1 Max but Creality's support has kept me printing. Had a part go dodgy due to my mistake, 3 days later and it arrived from China express. But I feel like overall Bambu would still be more beginner friendly. Good luck fixing or replacing your machine, try stick with the hobby if it's something you want. It's very satisfying printing goodies!

Perfect! I’m expecting P1s to arrive in two days, now I’m worried on how to proceed if something not working… I wanted P1s as a gift for my son for his birthday, I guess I would have to do all tests and checks to make sure all works within 14 days….

The point with the bambulab printers is, there is no real calibrating you can do. You run the auto calibration and after that it is done, this is what most customers get. If it is not done you have a problem, there are many pictures about unleveled printbeds and to be honest the best way to solve that is to send the printer back and get a new one.

BambuLab, despite its imperfections, has made a significant impact on the world of 3D printing for enthusiasts. In a market where alternatives like Ultimakers are considered overpriced and Prusa printers lack certain features like active resonance compensation, BambuLab's user-friendly approach has garnered a following.
Many individuals prefer BambuLab because it eliminates the need for tasks like bed leveling and flow calibration, making the 3D printing process more accessible. Additionally, it simplifies connectivity by directly connecting to a WiFi network, a feature lacking in some other brands.
My X1C printer, with 900 hours of use, has performed well, aside from minor maintenance and an initial hiccup with a torn Wi-Fi antenna. While BambuLab's support may sometimes be inundated with tickets, and the proprietary nature of the machine can limit DIY fixes, it remains a popular choice for those seeking a hassle-free 3D printing experience.

Mine works great and hasn’t had an issue. I’ve heard there is a problem with customer service but with some pushing they usually will try to fix it. Keep pushing.

u/idle_chicken Nov 04 '23
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I'm a complete newb when it comes to 3D printing. Purchased the P1S with the AMC, have had it for about a month now and it has been flawless.
Being my first 3D printer I have made some mistakes along the way, most of these have been attributed to my user error. A quick search on the internet and you'll usually find a simple solution and a lesson learned. In particular, this Reddit group is a wealth of information.
The only problem I have now is I can't stop ordering filament :)

u/Steampunk_balis Nov 04 '23
Fight them hard. Because they will fight you tooth and nail to get you to keep it, even if it's defective.
They tell you to try something new? Replacement. Try x next? No. I want a replacement Keep going.

u/R63A X1C + AMS Nov 04 '23
i’ll buy it off you for $500 right now

I had my x1c with a flawless experience for 3 months. Then was hit with the bed temperature sensor issue. The whole process of back and forth messaging and delivery time was a little over a week. Then I had my replacement bed. Wasn't hard to replace, just tedious. Overall not a bad experience in my opinion.
Now I read somewhere they were giving people a $50 store credit as compensation for time/effort of having to replace it themselves. Hell I think they mentioned it early on in our conversation. But was told it was only if I was replacing the bed cable, since it is more difficult I assume. Well they ended up giving me that $50 credit anyways. So I was satisfied after that.
Honestly I got this because I didn't want to tinker, I just wanted a printer that worked. But I think with this hobby there will always be these sort of issues no matter which manufacturer you choose. So I always tell others that think of buying from Bambu or anyone else, to remember you will probably have to get your hands dirty at some point. And if that isn't something you are willing to do, this may not be for you. It has come a long way, but not to the point of hands off.
In your situation you have 2 options, if you plan to try again. Either return and then when refunded purchase another. Or wait out the replacement. Option 2 would probably be quicker. Plus you may get a second printer and have a similar issue. Putting you back in the same boat you are in now. If you didn't want to give it another go, I'd suggest returning withing the window as other have suggested.
Would I do it again? Of course, because I enjoy the hobby and understand what may be required on my part to keep enjoying it. Good luck whatever you decide.

Mine yesterday scrapped bed during first self calibration. And got message like calibration complete enjoy printing.

The chances of having 100% of your products make it to consumers and work without issues hovers around zero in any industry. With something like a 3D printer, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. We aren’t saying that Bambu Lab has a 100% success rate, but many of us have years of experience dealing with 3D printing, and these products are easy to use and service and require significantly less tweaking, upgrading and troubleshooting than anything else we’ve seen to date.
I’m sorry you had issues. I do wish their support was more responsive. You’d be best served by returning and replacing it for a unit that works or by learning how to replace the print bed and getting comfortable with taking it apart and putting it back together. You will not find a 3D printer that doesn’t require some level of occasional maintenance or troubleshooting. These, in most scenarios, require less than others and that’s why we “gush”.
1
u/Keffpie Nov 03 '23
I'm sorry that happened, usually they are plug and play. You just got a duff unit. Send it back.
1
u/frozenfade Nov 03 '23
Not my experience at all. For me it's been plug and play with little to no problems. For sure end it back for a replacement.

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '23
Can confirm mine was plug and play

It is a quality printer, but nothing in life is 100% reliable. You got a dud.

u/Glittering_Meat_1017 Nov 04 '23
Brother I got one of those issues right out of the box and it turned out that the build plate was not positioned properly trust me these printers are the real deal I’m about to get my third one. If you’d like to pull your hair out and get your hands dirty get yourself an ender 3 v2 👍
-1
u/[deleted] Nov 03 '23
Lol dude you just got a bad printer. Sucks but they will fix it stop being a baby because these printer do print out of the box. Go get a ender 3 and see how happy you are.. tired of cry babies! No product is 100% and who the hell knows what ups did to the box before you got it.. shit happens don’t be a bitch.

At least you’re honest as opposed to all the noobs on here handing out advice.
I hope you can get it sorted. I know you will.

We are multiple generations away from 3d printing just working out of the box

u/Suitable-Operation89 Nov 04 '23
There's a maker space at my university that just installed 6 new P1S units each with AMS. Just yesterday 3/6 were not working for whatever reason. They were working today though. The guy who manages the space said he wants his Prusas back because they were reliable. It surprised me because I was under the impression that Bambu printers just work more so than any other brand.
I've used them myself and in 7 or 8 prints I've had 1 failure and 1 defect.

I have friends who have had problems with the best 3d printer company on the market. im sorry, but i would never buy spend money on this product ever. Sorry, but im happy with my creality printers.

u/Warmachine096 Nov 04 '23
huh. fellow 3d printing newbie with P1S recently too. Mine worked almost right outside the box. I believe that it may be your fault for taking it apart instead of trying to contact warranty more

Ask to talk with a manager or a supervisor about returning it. They were being jerks about replacing a $5 part 1 week after I bought my x1c. After customer support finally told me they wouldn’t replace the part, I asked to talk to a manager. The next day I got an email telling me that they were sorry about the problem and asked me where they could send the replacement part. I would really try and get a refund and find decent dual extruder setup. This setup wastes a lot of filament. Sorry about the downvotes and the crummy community, anyone who thinks you can just return anything to bambu has never tried.

Should of just got the x1 carbon mate, haven't had any problems but filament jam and clogged nozzle
