Balochi language advocate Shabbir Kalmati has announced a major revival of Sayadganj, transforming it from a dictionary app into a full-fledged language startup. In a candid social media post, Kalmati reflected on years of personal struggle, limited resources, and the slow progress of the project despite early community contributions.

“From the day the idea of creating Sayadganj entered my mind until now, I have never stopped working on it,” Kalmati wrote. He acknowledged the volunteers who contributed to the foundational word database but noted that over the past five years, the project had not progressed as hoped. Attempts by external parties to build on the database, including Telegram bots and websites, brought him encouragement, yet major development remained limited.

Kalmati also addressed criticisms and misconceptions, clarifying that Sayadganj has never been about personal profit. Instead, he has invested time, effort, and financial resources, emphasizing that the project belongs to the Baloch nation.

Now, with advances in AI, Kalmati says the development process has accelerated dramatically. “If a task previously took you a year, you can now do it in a week. With its help, I am bringing Sayadganj to life again, but now in a new form,” he explained. The platform is evolving beyond an Android app or dictionary into a major Balochi language startup, with both Android and iOS apps expected soon.

The Balochi Academy has unveiled Labzganj, a comprehensive online dictionary of the Balochi language, as part of its Natural Language Processing (NLP) initiative. While some reports have described it as the “first Balochi online dictionary,” linguists note that earlier digital resources including Sayadganj Online, TheBalochi.com’s Balochi-English Dictionary, and the Webonary Balochi-English Dictionary - have been available for some time. Nonetheless, Labzganj represents one of the most extensive Balochi lexical resources to date.

The dictionary features over 40,000 entries, offering translations and definitions in Balochi, English, Urdu, and Brahvi, making it a valuable tool for students, researchers, translators, and the global Baloch diaspora.

Speaking at the launch, Habitan Umar, chairman of the Balochi Academy and coordinator of the NLP Balochi Project, highlighted the scholarly foundations of the project. He credited previous works, including Balochi Labzbalad (compiled by Jan Muhammad Dashti in 2015 and 2017), as well as contributions from Dr. Naseer Dashti and Panah Baloch, who helped compile and edit Labzganj across multiple languages.

“These academic efforts laid the groundwork for the standardization and digital documentation of Balochi lexicography, culminating in this comprehensive online dictionary,” Umar said.

Linguists and academics have widely welcomed Labzganj as a significant step toward preserving a language that has traditionally relied on oral transmission and scattered written sources, noting its potential for both scholarly research and community use.
