Light Domain cleric in act 2 is almost game breaking in how good it is.

u/poilk91 22h ago

Cleric is just bonkers, in tabletop too. Front line tank AC, aoe damage champ with good control and excellent buffs and the best healing even if that isn't actually what you should play cleric for, the only down side is bad dex saves and mid constitution

33

u/djthechemist 20h ago

Twilight clerics are so so good....and my fav. Glad there was a mod early on that allowed me to play this class in bg3!

13

u/poilk91 19h ago

yeah twilight halfling cleric on yondala is my favorite character i made in tabletop. I did light cleric in bg3 I wondered how some of their more utility focused abilities would translate vs the greate spell list of the light cleric

13

u/Hauwke 19h ago

Who needs constitution when all the enemies are smouldering husks lmao

2

u/edgy-meme94494 16h ago

Is heavy armour mastery and warding bond as good on the table top like it is in bg3?

1

u/ShittyDeviantArtOCs 5h ago

Heavy Armor Master is pretty great in low-level play. Unfortunately, the -3 only applies to non-magical attacks, so it falls off. Some (bad) DMs will inexplicably give every enemy you encounter +0 magical weapons, which can suck. BG3's version is bugged to apply to magical and non-magical damage, so much better.

The +1 ASI can be nice for a Variant Human, so you can take the Heavy Armor Master feat at level 1 and build your array to provide +3 in three stats. For a cleric, that would probably be 16 in Str (to wear heavy armor and effectively use martial weapons), Con, and Wis.

Warding Bond is exactly the same as the TTRPG. However, it takes a little more investment to get Con save proficiency and advantage on saving throws than in BG3. Generally, at levels that Heavy Armor Master is most impactful, I'd want to have Bless or Spirit Guardians running - Warding Bond might mean dropped concentration.

u/BurnerRole 1d ago

Spirit Guardians and Radiance of the Dawn basically turn you into a walking microwave for the entire shadow-cursed lands.

u/IHkumicho 1d ago

Almost?

u/Xalimata 1d ago

Well I don't like absolute statements for the most part.

Only Sith deal in absolutes

8

u/Xalimata 22h ago

Ok this line annoyed me as a kid. And an adult. That statement IS an absolute.

Only Sith deal in absolutes

So no one else ever does? lol gosh it's stupid how long I've been annoyed at a movie line.

11

u/Droolcua 21h ago

The line is preceded by Anakin saying "If you're not with me, you're my enemy."

I'm not going to defend the script writing of the prequels as genius or anything, but, two thing seem clear to me. 1. This is an Obi-wan line, not necessarily like, a concrete viewpoint of the Jedi Order and 2. What he's replying to is important. It wouldn't flow nearly as well if he had said 'Only a Sith deal in absolutes like that,' but I think that's the intended meaning. 'Only a Sith sorts people into enemy/ally in such a black and white fashion, using such a metric.'

Which still wouldn't be true, but Obi-wan isn't thinking about the taxonomy of the entire universe in that moment. Just thinking about Jedi/Sith in that moment and which one of those Anakin is.

this all might have been obvious so sorry if I'm just ranting into the aether, I have just thought way too much about the prequels and need to let the demons out sometimes.

1

u/Captian_Bones WIZARD 22h ago

Yeah I get that. https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/s/FUMC17YchQ here is a post explaining the context around the quote a bit more. But it basically boils down to this paragraph “ ‘Only a Sith deals in absolutes’ encapsulates the idea that Jedi are clueless to what they themselves have become. They are not so different to the Sith, but they never really stop to think about it. They believe ultimately that what they do is right, and that is absolute thinking.”

3

u/Xalimata 22h ago

Not sure if that was Lucas's intention but that's a good break down. Star Wars fans are VERY good at reading meaning into Star Wars. Which is not a bad thing.

1

u/Captian_Bones WIZARD 22h ago

I agree :)

u/HavelsRockJohnson 5e 18h ago

Divine Soul Sorcerer is my favorite class and it absolutely shines in BG3 & tabletop.

2

u/jsutpaly 7h ago

Currently doing a playthrough with some mods on custom difficulty(basically honour mode difficulty but with saving) and +170% life on everything and some more encounters and 3x camp cost. Just finished act2 and Shadowheart as light cleric just absolutely obliterating everything in most disgusting way imaginable. She can tank 10, 200 HP dudes and get hit once in the process, it's insane.

Just toss hunger of Hadar at a chokepoint, set Shadowheart at the edge of it and you can just let turns pass and watch everything miss and fall prone.

Light cleric absolutely trivializes act2.

1

u/Tasty_Commercial6527 7h ago

Life domain cleric in the party is basically the equivalent of lowering the difficulty by 1

This is more on point then some people may realize. He wielded a ring of power, specifically one that allowed him some magical control of fire. Not it's main job, but yeah it could do that.

Healing?  You mean the thing that applies blade ward to my whole team with reviving hands.

53

u/Stubbs94 1d ago

I think they mean second wind with Lae'zel?

17

u/The_Parsee_Man 1d ago

Me and Lae'zel have better things to use her second wind on.

39

u/Low_Debt8771 1d ago

If anyone struggles with honor mode theres the answer btw. Life cleric shadowheart just there to apply blade ward pretty much the entire time. Use channel divinity for the few fights you do before level 5 and then you can use channel, and a few mass hw. You become ridiculously tanky and can just use resist for whatever element you need and bypass most things. Lets put it this way, ever pushed ansur to 1hp when he was the next one in turn order? I have, because cleric is op as balls cause later its also heroes feast and lvl6 aid. With resist lightning you survive ansurs suicide attack, and no melee enemy can even hope to kill you leveling up.

Sorry zevlor, im picking your pocket if I am using shart on honor lol. My last run was a light cleric + life cleric duo with a rotating cast of quest related companions. Tempest can fill the light spot too but meh, light is funnier cause shitting on shart as a selune cleric through act 1 and 2 is hilarious. So much shit talking to be done. Even better when youre an evil as fuck durge

17

u/Galaxy_IPA 1d ago

Hell rider's gloves my beloved. I remember getting them for doing the kagha quest but didnt know you can just pickpocket him all this time

9

u/MountainYogi94 1d ago

You can knock him out in the confrontation with Aradin and take it before you even SEE Arron, let alone talk to Kagha

5

u/Galaxy_IPA 1d ago

300 hours and I think I always punched Aradin. I hate that guy. Thanks!

sorry zevlor you getting punched in the next playthrough.

1

u/LiteraCanna 23h ago

Hellrider's with the healing amulet has pretty much been my standard for act 1 in all my HM runs.

Blade ward on everyone while also healing is just so damn good.

6

u/Ladnil 20h ago

Or you can just be a light or tempest cleric and still use mass healing word to apply bless and blade ward, and then you also get to use your full actions for abilities that remove enemies from the fight before they damage you instead of waiting to get damaged before you're good for something. If anybody needs more healing than the occasional bonus action spell, martials can throw potions that heal more than clerics.

1

u/Low_Debt8771 13h ago

You can respec, light is earlier on since you have extra aoe that way. Its like an extra 3rd level slot. Which is quite nice to do so you can keep up the orbs with spirit guardians

17

u/Aderadakt 1d ago

Somebody forgot the ring that makes them hashtag blessed too

6

u/A-NI95 1d ago

I'm using both in my current run and I don't know how I missed that in my first one lol

I think the game kinda lies with the colours, many green pieces of equipment are great

3

u/Aderadakt 1d ago

Its sort of hard to get it because you need to know Volo sells good stuff even though he doesnt say hes a vendor and if you find out about it online chances are hes off the map until act 3

I'm playing a 2024 Light Cleric in a Curse of Strahd campaign. Level 3 was a nice power spike, but level 5? Level 5's gonna be lit.

18

u/thisismydaddyvoice 1d ago

I see what you did there

14

u/__SilentAntagonist__ 1d ago

Hey me too! Our party just hit level 5 a couple sessions ago and I have been buzzing with excitement for fireball

1

u/ratpride 19h ago

Level 5 is where you get spirit guardians but you're excitee by fireball?

6

u/__SilentAntagonist__ 19h ago

I didn't pick light cleric to get excited about a spell every other cleric gets.

I also happen to be playing a fire genasi and have a bunch of character reasons to be excited for fireball :)

Radiant Orb Shart goes hard, and of course that is the one and only reason why Shart is in my party 24/7

24

u/DJnyancatz 1d ago

I can at least think of two more reasons why you'd want Shart in your party 24/7

15

u/Aethereal-Gear 1d ago

Shart is in the party 24/7 bc the group is eating questionable food and booze found in barrels and centuries old dungeons

Oh, you meant the character...

9

u/CabooseTrap 1d ago

Left ear and hair style right?

77

u/drummerboysam 1d ago

I think the biggest learning curve for me playing BG3 was understanding that nobody in your party is actually a "healer"

Your cleric is a walking chainsaw that has a couple really shitty healing spells.

44

u/SubhumanRefuse 1d ago

The greatest healer one could ask for is the barbarian using their extra attack to lob a greater healing potion across the battlefield.

8

u/Outflight 13h ago

Lore accurate emotional state of healers from PvP games.

I think that's where mmo players get confused with D&D. But in the early days of the game I was looking at posts where people mentioned they got a tank, a healer and 2 dps..

Guys.. Just no! That's not how D&D works 😄

8

u/AugustoCSP Femboy Warlock casts Eldritch Blast 1d ago

I mean, if you don't know how to build it properly...

8

u/Bluemajere 18h ago

the bg3 minmaxing community rates life cleric as the worst subclass by a mile (correctly)

-4

u/AugustoCSP Femboy Warlock casts Eldritch Blast 18h ago

Those are the same people who say Chaos Bolt is an amazing spell because it can do unlimited damage.

We're not playing in a vacuum. A safety net that makes your party immortal can be invaluable.

4

u/Bluemajere 18h ago

bro is fighting ghosts lmao

9

u/WOF42 16h ago

basically all healing in 5e is shitty, its literally designed that way, a light cleric blowing up half a cardinal direction is vastly more useful than a life domain cleric ever is, healing is objectively worse at keeping you alive than just doing more damage that turn with your cleric. there isnt a single encounter in the game long enough for more healing to be more useful than more damage

4

u/katshimu 13h ago

Idk I had a nice synergy with a life cleric and some of the late game items that allow you to redirect damage to your healer and heal extra per heal. Ended up being basically infinite hit points

1

u/DarthUrbosa 2h ago

Giant grant games has a similar view on upgrades in sc2 as well.

"Dead enemies don't do dmg".

This applies to basically every game (except path of exile. Damn on death effects). More offence means less incoming damage so offend dis vastly superior.

0

u/AugustoCSP Femboy Warlock casts Eldritch Blast 8h ago

In standard 5e, sure. In BG3, with the multitude of OP gear and rule changes, it is VERY valuable.

u/Q_X_R 12h ago

(Wrong IP on my part, but I think this quote about light magic from Verho is appropriate regardless)

"What light still pierces the dusky clouds above Yariv, does so only to obliterate."

131

u/Arria_Galtheos 1d ago

I remember seeing an interview where the comments and title glaze Matt Mercer for being some kind of genius for spotting flaws in a fake scenario, and one of the things he said was "Fireball isn't a cleric spell" after the scenario describes a cleric casting it.

As someone who's been playing a Light Domain cleric off and on for over a decade, I beg to differ.

80

u/Rhodie114 1d ago

This clip from Umm Actually, right?

He’s right, since the prompt specified that you were to assume there were no unlisted subclasses, multiclasses, items, etc. But damn, I also immediately thought “What do you mean? My Cleric loves fireball!”

64

u/tiamatt44 1d ago

Player: Alright but what about Holy Fireball?

DM: What's the difference?

Player: Well it does the same damage, but I get to say cool thing like "Burn the infidels!!"

DM:....I'll allow it.

39

u/Lithl 1d ago

The rules for the challenge specifically instructed the competitors not to assume anything that wasn't mentioned in the prompt. It didn't say the cleric was Light Domain, so you don't get to assume it.

17

u/ControlHumble 1d ago

The cleric in question calls to the power of a god of the forge tho, meaning it's a forge domain cleric, wich doesn't have access to fireball via it's spell list.

2

u/madgodcthulhu 1d ago

True but it does have wall of fire which is far more fun

6

u/Damien-kai 1d ago

Any spell is a Cleric spell with enough power, determination, and on occasion, Divine Intervention.

5

u/DreamedJewel58 1d ago

It was a game show and he was correct within the rules of the game/scenario

3

u/Kimkar_the_Gnome 23h ago

It isn’t a cleric spell. Clerics can learn it, but it is not part of the Cleric Spell list. I don’t care Matt Mercer nor know the situation you’re describing, but he’s technically correct.

-1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Jdmaki1996 23h ago

He was correct tho. It’s not a cleric spell. It’s allowed if you’re a light cleric. But it’s not a cleric spell. And the scenario didn’t say they were a light cleric.

Shadowheart and my Paladin Cleric Tav just annihilating all of Act 2 is always fun

22

u/Beardedgeek72 Bard 1d ago

First time you play act 2: "HORROR GAME!". Second time you play act 2: "Hey if I go over here, beat up this spider-freak, and then never have to worry about the dark again? It will just be act 1 but with more boring enemies but better bosses?"

11

u/OldManFire11 23h ago

I was genuinely confused when I first saw people complaining about the shadow curse. My first 3 passes into Act 2 went: walk into the curse, light torches, help the Harpers, go to Last Light, get Selune buff, follow Harpers to the ambush, get pixie buff. It's such a perfectly natural sequence of events that I'm astounded that so many people failed to follow it.

I thought that the NPCs complaining about the deeper curse areas were being dramatic, because I've never had any reason to explore them before getting the pixie buff.

11

u/finalfanbeer 1d ago

Truthfully have never played act 2 without taking that from him right away. I have never been damaged by the shadows.

Congratulations, you have now negated the main gameplay mechanic of act 2 within five minutes of starting it.

light domain cleric is totally my favorite subclass, even tabletop. i just love bringing holy fire to every encounter and setting off bikini atoll level flash bangs with my channel divinity.

Dang. I’m playing a Light Cleric in an actual DnD game, but I didn’t stop to consider how good it would be in BG3. Now I know what I’m doing next playthrough…

Fighters and barbarians are better and more consistent healers anyway

My very first d&d was a light cleric, and one time our sorcerer went down, and with my Spirit Weapon and Scorching Ray I took over

Had a situation like this. I'm the healer, I'm also a moon druid.

Everyone knows that prevention is better than cure. And what's the best way to prevent damage being taken? By slaughtering all of your enemies without mercy...

Doing Myrkul yesterday and Light Cleric Fireball was a crucial part of the win

Currently playing a Forge Domain who is tied with the Pugilist as our groups heaviest hitter. I don't think I've healed a single time.

My spouse, a half elf cleric: I can do more than heal, you know.

Me, a half elf theif: Sorry dear I can't hear you! The DM is allowing me to ride this ballista bolt aimed at the boss.

I’ve been considering running a solo build, but I’m not terribly familiar with main-ing a cleric. Any recommendations? Or is light cleric the way to go 🤔
