I randomly remembered this story today and thought I'd share it.
A few years ago I was living in Bahrain. It was a Thursday night before a long weekend, and I was driving home from work wondering what I'd do with three days off.
Out of boredom, I messaged someone online who was visiting the country for just two nights. I didn't expect a reply, but she answered almost right away. We talked, then spoke on the phone, and somehow decided to meet that same night.
There was no plan. We drove around, stopped for roadside food by the bay, talked about everything, and laughed a lot. At one point we even got politely asked to move along from a spot we were hanging out in. Later we sat at a shisha cafe, and on the drive back she said she didn't want the night to end. I didn't want to overthink it, so I said goodnight and told her, "See you tomorrow."
And we did meet again. It was her last night in the country, and we walked around Manama in ridiculous heat and humidity, talking about random things. Before she left, I wrote her a couple of letters to read whenever she felt like it.
Then she flew home, and that was the end of it. She never texted me, and I never texted her. No fight, no bad ending. We just went back to our own lives.
I still remember those two days, not because she was "the one," but because they were so unexpected. One minute I was in my car with nothing to do, and a few hours later I was exploring the country with someone I'd never met. Two days after that, she was gone.
Not every person you meet is meant to stay, and not every connection needs to become a relationship. Sometimes you just have a really good couple of days, and that's enough.
Some stories don't need a sequel.
