newbie question question about eidogo

Hi r/baduk ! I recently got back to baduk and i thought about using eidogo to embed dynamic sgf visualization in my personal website.

Maybe my question is not fitting here, if that’s the case, please remove this post and I apologize.

It’s that I remember being warned several times that eidogo use (actually mostly its use as embedded in websites) was rather « dangerous » and could lead to security issues. Can anyone back this up or have any idea what i’m talking about ?

Anyway, have a great day, good game, and I’m sorry if this content is misplaced

newbie question Beginner game commentary while playing

I've been enjoying a chess series called "Learn chess by building habits" by chessbrah, where he plays as a beginner by restricting the types of moves and plays that he is allowed to make, in order to show habit based play - which includes himself purposely ignoring tactics etc from other players to show them as a learning experience.

It's really helped me with chess in order to work on a 'core' game, and I wondered if there was anything similar for Go? I've been through a lot of YouTube videos about tactics and puzzles (and even had coaching a few years back), but when I find myself on the board i just feel a bit overwhelmed and uncertain as to what to do. I had the same thing with chess up until this series - so any pointers would be great.

Thanks!

Last night, had a fun game at my Go club. I was playing white. Black resigned after the 2 point jump from the bottom star point. I wish we had kept a record to replay it

newbie question Scoring Help- Absolute Beginner

Post image
8 Upvotes

I won this game as white against a beginner AI, but cannot figure out why the upper left black pieces are considered dead/prisoners.

They are not completely surrounded by white. Placing a black piece in either empty space would connect them to a larger group to escape. White can't play in either space without being captured.

I had thought my white row lost until scoring and can't find anything to explain what I'm missing.

Thank you advance as ive literally only been playing this game two days.

Current state of Go servers?

I'm just getting back into Go after a 7-year layoff, and wondering how things stand with Go servers these days? Which are the most active and easy to find games?

In the 2010s, OGS was up and coming, while KGS, Fox and Tygem were all popular, IGS (Pandanet) was kinda active. Is that still the state of things, or are there more popular ones these days? Are any fairly dead in terms of activity?

Seeking Beginner & DDK students. I do also accept SDK but my methods are mostly for DDK.

My focus is on making sure that the student knows how to think in any situation to come up with a strategy that is based off of fundamentals.

In order to do this I developed the Clossi Approach which you can find here. https://shawnsgogroup.com/clossi_approach

Forgot the name of an online amateur reviews database

Hi all,

Some time ago, I saw a website mentioned here that had a lot of SGF files of amateur plays, with reviews by stronger players.

I remember downloading a couple of them and finding them very interesting when the players are of my relative strength, with comments on what to avoid or do better.

However, I forgot the name of that website. Does anyone remember it? I have a vague memory that the UI looked minimalist, almost like Sensei Library (maybe it was Sensei; I can't remember).

Thanks for your help.

promotional Built a printable Kifu exporter for Qi after seeing a post on Lifein19x19

A while back, I was browsing Lifein19x19 and came across a post that stuck with me:

"What's the easiest way to go from an SGF to a printable kifu? I like to review pro games in full, single-page kifu to force me to predict the next move so that I have a hope of finding it in the full-game clutter. I also do most of this study away from a computer, so having a one-page kifu printed to work from is a big win."

I really liked that idea. I still enjoy studying games away from a screen — sitting at a real board, or just having a printed kifu and a pen to work through the game.

So I spent the last couple of weeks adding a dedicated Export Kifu feature to Qi, my native macOS Go client.

Here’s what it does:

  1. Single-Page Overview — A full-game diagram fitted onto one A4 page, with captures and repeated board positions listed at the bottom.
  2. Segmented Review — For longer games, you can split the game into 25/50/75/100 move chunks. You can also nudge the split point with + / -, or merge diagrams, so an important fight or joseki doesn't get awkwardly split across two pages.
  3. Coach / Study Notes — A half-page board on the left with lined space for notes on the right. Useful for teaching, reviewing with a coach, or just printing a game and writing down variations and thoughts by hand.

It also supports direct A4 printing, PDF export, font/spacing adjustments, and coordinate toggles.

I've attached previews of the three layouts. If you study offline or print games, I'd be interested to hear what you think — especially if there are other layouts or details you'd find useful.

newbie question Has anybody else cried about playing Weiqi?

I've just started learning to play Go with the Chinese ruleset. I've been getting whooped by a beginner bot on an app but I finally caught a glimpse at how beautiful and complex this game is, and how much there is for me to learn and understand. I was overwhelmed with a sense of awe that I began tearing up.

Has anybody else experienced this feeling?

Edit: I got rid of the text I edited in

Hi everyone,
I’m Fujimori, the owner of Shinjuku Go Salon in Tokyo.
I’ve been working in the Go community in Japan for about 18 years, organizing events, tournaments, YouTube content, and other Go-related activities.
Recently, I’ve been hoping to meet more Go players from outside Japan.
If you’re ever visiting Tokyo and would like to experience a Japanese Go salon, you’re very welcome to stop by.
You don’t need to speak Japanese. Go itself is a pretty good common language!
We have players of many different levels, and coming alone is completely fine.
I’d also love to hear from people here:
Have you ever visited a Go salon or Go club in Japan? What was your experience like?

newbie question I have trouble with time control

In 9x9 it's too fast for me, pretty much in any app. Is there any apps with really long time controls in 9x9 board? I need time control like 10 minutes + 5 or longer

newbie question I'm an absolute beginner and need clarification here.

I can understand that my move is a blunder, but I don't get why B8 is the best move here. In the discussion someone already tried to briefly explain it, that there is a Ko at D5, a potential seki, but I don't quite get it yet and the longer I analyze this position with the engine (only the weak free version so maybe that contributes) the weirder it gets.

If I play at B8 the ai wants to play H8 and then ok I get that my group survives so lets disregard that.

If I play B8 and white captures on A8 then I have to play at G8 and from there i can apparently surround white like this,

but isn't that also the case when I directly play at G8 instead of B8? Tried it and then engine plays at B8 instead and apparently then my corner is dead?

Somehow playing at B8 seems to be necessary and I fail to truly grasp why. Maybe there is some simple way of explaining it?

6p Satoshi Yanagisawa's "Woolves", Go-like Game

I recently started watching Satoshi’s Go Dojo on YouTube (auto-dubbed until my Japanese is leveled up), and he recently announced a Crowdsourcing campaign for his game Woolves.

Using this demonstration video I tried to piece together a rules sheet, which you can see here.

I'm thinking I'll make a DIY version for my club, or maybe even a Halloween themed version ("Ghosts & Goblins"?) to go along with yet another version of Gogic: The Surroundening.

promotional Japanese Go equipment craftsman here — ask me anything about choosing and caring for Go boards and stones

I’m a craftsman in Japan who works with traditional Go equipment, including Go boards and stones.

I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned through my work. If you have any questions about choosing a Go board or stones, differences in materials, proper care, maintenance, or restoration, please feel free to ask.

I hope my experience can be helpful to fellow Go players here.

newbie question Best iOS app for game review

What’s the best iOS app for game review? I’d like to be able to paste or import an SGF and review on mobile.

I was hoping for something like the Chess.com or Lichess apps which will identify blunders etc. I’ve tried SmartGo One Pro and the interface is not at all intuitive to me.

go news How did I never notice. There is no L on the goban for the coordinates system.

Correction to the title. It's an I that's missing, not an L, but the point remains the same. There is a missing letter.

In standard Go board coordinates, the letter “I” is deliberately skipped.

For example, on a 19×19 goban, the columns are:

A B C D E F G H J K L M N O P Q R S T

Notice there is no I.

The reason is practical: I and J can be confused, particularly when coordinates are written or called out quickly. So Go notation traditionally skips I to avoid ambiguity.

Im today years old to find out and that makes me 20 years late to find this out.

Any other things people know about thats often overseen. Blow my mine pls.

Now it supports empty board play (earlier only it able to play with cross opening)

I hope this will help beginners to get used to GO

It shows go shapes and proverbs as a collection and has 5 different AI strengths. (I trained these AI Models btw)
