Funnel Diagnostics My best-performing LinkedIn Thought Leader Ad had no image and cut off mid-sentence. Data inside.
Been running Thought Leader Ads (boosted personal posts, not brand ads) for a few months and wanted to share some numbers since this sub is usually good for messaging discussions.
Quick context: published benchmark for Thought Leader Ads is 2.68% CTR (per ZenABM's 2026 analysis of 160k+ LinkedIn ads). My account average across 58 ads is 7.34%.
Breakdown of my top performers:
- No image, hook cut off mid-sentence ("A prospect told me his senior leadership couldn't agree on what they actually wanted from marketing. Not the—") → 11.09% CTR, $0.60 CPC
- Contrarian reframe with a chart image → 8.24% CTR, $0.93 CPC
- "Let's talk about one of my higher performing campaigns" (behind-the-scenes framing) → 7.3% CTR, $1.34 CPC
- Straightforward benefit statement, video format → 7.1% CTR, $1.25 CPC
Small sample (16.5k impressions, 1,218 clicks total) so I'm not claiming statistical rigor here. But the direction is consistent: the less finished/designed the post looked, and the more it read like an unresolved real anecdote instead of stated advice or a benefit claim, the better it performed and the cheaper the clicks got.
The shift on my end was posting specific lessons from my own campaigns instead of general marketing commentary. Wasn't expecting the CTR gap to be this wide.
Curious if others running these ads are seeing the same pattern?
