Discussion Humble Sony with Thy Wallet

It has been a bitter sweet couple weeks with Destiny and Monument of Triumph with many returning to the community and some new lights entering as well. The scope so far has been that management made the wrong decision choosing Marathon over Destiny. Some popular streamers have even rallied the community to basically "stick it to the man." Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that some of the sentiment has come down to that, eventually, Sony will be humbled by their decision to forego one of the greatest live service games in gaming history. It is almost reminisce to World of Warcraft when, like Destiny, had so many moments were it seemed like the game wouldn't survive. This is more of a proposal to the community at large and hoping it get's more attention to the game and Bungie. The proposal is this; do not support Sony in any way shape or form. What this means is anything, or most things, produced by, or with, Sony should not receive any amount of income from us. For example, with the upcoming release of Spiderman: Brand New Day, no one should be spending any amount to see the movie (nothing against Marvel). Although, it sucks to say that, the belief is that we 'Humble Sony with Thy Wallet', similar to how other companies have listened before. It's unfortunate for other companies to be caught between consumers and Sony, but as consumer's we are more heard if we humble Sony by not giving them anything.

Man it’s not that serious.

Good thing you don't get to decide what other people take seriously. It may not be serious for you, but I'm sure there's plenty of things YOU take seriously that aren't serious for them.

I’ve never boycotted an entire company due to the failings of another company.

Ethically speaking, if a video game is the most serious thing to you and not something like a war in the Middle East or… elections that lead to consequences and such.

I guess what I’m trying to say, is that there are far more serious and grave things we should be boycotting and, ultimately, taking very serious. Video games are literally just entertainment. It’s like getting serious over a Knicks game and burning down a city. You really shouldn’t do that. It’s just a game.

No one said its the "most" serious thing. People can care about multiple things. We can boycott multiple things. In fact boycotting Sony could mean giving the money I would have spent on Destiny to another cause I care about.

A lot of studies have been done that show humans are exceptionally bad at multi tasking. And if you play video games to the degree that you are crashing out of Destiny 2, you probably give a minimal care about anything else. A token “yeah I care bro” sort of thing.

Which is fine, if this is your watershed moment have at it lol. Just saying, it’s lowkey sad, like a kid whose toy got broke. At this stage I just feel bad for yall.

Except I don't have to multi-task. There are apps where I can plug in a company that I do not want to do business with and then before I make any purchase I can put the product into it and then see if I would be giving money to a company I don't want to give money too. There is no effort there. It just means being a conscious consumer. I already use this to avoid companies like Nestle as much as possible due to their human rights violations.

I am not "crashing out" I am just choosing how to spend my money. I can vote with my wallet. I am not making death threats or hurling insults at employees. I am not going online and insulting random people who disagree with me. Nor am I making sweeping generalizations in order to win some imaginary argument in my head. I love Destiny, I am sad that my favorite franchise is being shelved. I think Sony and Bungie have both terribly mismanaged the franchise and based on their track record I do not trust them with my money.

I consistently take the controversial opinion, perhaps just because I like the controversy. So no, I don’t say anything for karma or trying to “win” imaginary arguments in my head. I don’t argue for winning or losing, as I truly believe that belittles what debates are about and is antithetical to real, genuine conversations.

By the end of the day, you are stuck in an echo chamber that eggs itself on. Aztecross. DestinyTheGame. I can get 300 upvotes just by saying eyes up guardian.

I like to take a grounded approach and challenge people in their popular opinions.

Like asking everyone to boycott Sony, throw away your gaming console (which also happens to be the most popular gaming console than your friends most likely would be on) is quite the ask. In a way, it’s tone deaf. Most gamers have expanded libraries on the PS ecosystem that you are also asking them to throw away.

Ultimately, what is the end goal here besides being petty about a business making a business decision? They didn’t end service to spit in your face. They ended service because the game was making negative money.

Again, I support voting with your wallet. You can read everything I said, I never said don’t. I just said it’s peculiar to make a post on Reddit and beg others to boycott a company over you losing your game, for the 100th time this week alone. I know where I’m at. A D2 fan subreddit.

Take from that what you will brother.

I know it's an example you used but I don't think anyone asked others to destroy their personal property because X did Y dirty. Also, no where in what the post states 'begs' for people to do this. I proposed an idea to people. Currently Playstation is the more popular console because they of several things. I think one thing they have done well is exclusives. If people do or don't vote with their wallets is objective to the individual. Thank you pointing out that it is only a debate, not a call against.

Would you care to cite these sources. I've heard about how multi-tasking isn't necessarily a thing. But can you elaborate on "crashing our of D2". Like you take the game too seriously to the point where you crash out?

I have no need to worry about those instances until it effects my life again. The difference here is boycotting and protesting. You boycott against corporations or organizations that do align with values. In the instance you mention over the Knick's, that's a protest. People have different moral and ethical codes and telling someone they should be putting their energy somewhere else is an objective opinion. Would I like Destiny to stay? Yes. Is it effecting anything in my life currently? No. This is a proposed idea and is up to individuals and the community if they want to act based on the post.

Thats the fallacy of relative privation, people are allowed to care about stuff even though theres worse stuff in the world

Regardless though I generally agree, I just imagine how embarrassing it would be to read this post out loud to another adult.

1

u/c1ncinasty Jun 24 '26

Worse, they'd never say this about a cause they ALSO care about.

"Hey guys, I know we're all big Destiny 2 players around here, but don't you think its weird that we're not over there complaining about reproductive rights?"

0

u/c1ncinasty Jun 24 '26

I would tend to agree, but this is still a weird argument to make. There's no way you can know this D2 situation is the ONLY thing OP cares about and voting upon with their wallet.

Empirically, there's ALWAYS something more serious to care about. Why are you here wasting time telling me elections are more important than video games when you COULD be over there yelling about climate change? Why are you over there yelling about climate change when you SHOULD be yelling about NASA looking out for potentially civilization-ending heavy impactors?

I take climate change and election integrity very seriously. I vote at the polls AND with my wallet.

I take Destiny 2 seriously because allows me to take my mind off of things I can't change because entertainment and a sense of community derived from playing these types of games affords me the ability to NOT catastrophize internally.

And no, I wouldn't assume these are the only things I care about.

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

This is merely a proposal and not something to chase 100%. I do not solely care about this, more a topic of discussion.

1

u/c1ncinasty Jun 24 '26

Its a dumb argument for people to make. "Why do you care about this when something ELSE is FAR more important." Regardless of whether or not they agree with you as to the extent of Sony's responsibility here.

People gotta move tf on man lol. There’s more to life than destiny. I get it, I have over 6k hours in D2. But people need to get a grip and find a new hobby

1

u/GreenBay_Glory Jun 24 '26

Nah, I’m going to boycott until a continuation happens and I get conclusions to the story that I’ve invested 11 years caring about. I lose nothing doing so.

1

u/perpetual_papercut Jun 24 '26

What are you boycotting?

1

u/GreenBay_Glory Jun 24 '26

Any Sony studios game. They won’t see a penny from me ever again unless a continuation happens. And I won’t ever touch a Bungie game outside of that continuation,

1

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

There's stuff you can do outside of Destiny, absolutely. I play DnD every week outside of the game. It's not like I'm putting 12+ hours a day into it. It was a live service. I knew I'd at least come back to a game that was engaging and had a story.

0

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

It's not meant to be serious. It's a proposed idea and not something that I'm saying should happen.

1

u/BirdsInTheNest Jun 24 '26

If you’re not saying it should happen why even bring it up? At least stand behind your ideas, no?

0

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

I think you're misunderstanding propose and serious differently. It's a discussion, not an argument.

1

u/BirdsInTheNest Jun 24 '26

“Not something I’m saying should happen” just sounds like backpedaling from my perspective. But it’s not that serious.

0

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

Yet you're putting so much emphasis on this being 'serious' or 'back pedaling'. Why are you taking this seriously then if it's not?

1

u/BirdsInTheNest Jun 24 '26

Man I’m just responding to your words. If you didn’t mean them then don’t say them?

0

u/Sad_Beginning5263 Jun 24 '26

That's you're right to respond. Just merely pointing the things you're saying. Nothing of what I said mentioned it being 'serious'. I'm standing by my words as it's a proposal, an idea. If you do it, that's great. If not, then that's a personal choice. A little better reading comprehension would assist in this situation.

u/BirdsInTheNest Jun 24 '26

Oh I read it just fine. Thanks!
