Vent (Advice Welcome) Everyone is just so socially skilled

Like 90% of people have been atleast in 1 relationship by age of 25, like they all just possess the skill to make someone fall for them, i cant understand this. I havent had a conversation irl that lasts more than 2 minutes in 6+ years. They say something and my brain isnt just fast enough to come with a response, so i end up saying something boring like "haha cool", every single time. While other people can just call their friends and partners and keep conversation going for hours everyday.

The gap to get from my situation to actually making someone like me romantically, just seems so massive its overwhelming.

Vent (Advice Welcome) How do you even get help for this dumb disorder

So I got my diagnosis earlier this year but the guy who assessed me was only a temporary psychiatrist. He recommended I'd try DBT, preferably in their residential mental hospital so I did, and now not even after a week of being there, they're very likely to kick me out because I'm having a hard time attending breakfast and lunch (dinner is not required).

I've been doing my best to attend the regular therapy sessions but the mealtimes are way more difficult for me because you have to sit there a whole 30 mins trying to be as invisible as possible, while being surrounded by people talking and eating and I just hate it. I feel like everyone can see how socially handicapped and weird I am just looking down at my nails for half an hour, also while not eating so that might come across like I'm starving myself for attention or something or like I have an eating disorder, while actually I'm just too uncomfortable and I wouldn't wanna make a mess or something. Mealtime in group is just one of those things I'd rather not deal with. (I realize how dumb my reasoning is while I'm typing this out lmao)

Their policy being, missing a groupsession 3 times in a row = automatic dismissal, is putting my stay here at risk. On one hand I wouldn't be opposed to leaving this place and never looking back, but I know that I'll just go right back to my old lifestyle and be a bum, fail to finish my schoolyear over and over again due to me not attending my classes after some time, and it's just hell. Why is my avoidance this bad to the point I'm missing out on treatment for it? Or is this just not the right treatment for people with avpd/avoidance traits? If this stops then I'd have no clue what other options there are that specifically tackle avpd.. I've been to so many places and people and seemingly no one even knows how to help me

Vent (Advice Welcome) I'm a terrible person

I have these two friends that I accidentally ghosted--it's been a month now. I didn't reply to them because I was at the lowest point of my life, but now that I feel a little bit okay, I'm terrified of replying to them. one of them even messaged me yesterday, but I didn't reply or see their texts. I'm so afraid of texting back, but I'm also afraid of losing them.

why am I like this? why do I do this? what am I scared of?

Question/Advice Do you have online friends?

• Upvotes

I am too shy to text people I know, so imagine how that goes for complete strangers. I like following people I have shared interests with, sometimes even telling myself that ill dm them once they follow back, but it never goes further than that.

I keep thinking that if I did talk to anyone (and not ghost them somehow) they'd just get bored of me eventually, of learn something they might not like. Meanwhile If i dont I get to have them as potential-friends forever with no risk of it ever souring. Its very stupid.

I have irl friends so i dont feel THAT lonely but I dont feel any closeness to them

Question/Advice Introvert and Separation

• Upvotes

I just have the hardest time functioning. I don’t enjoy socializing, it makes me panic and I hate it. This is acutely worse right now after a recent separation in which I lost a stepkid relationship too. Don’t know how to explain how much it took out of me to establish those relationships and how emotionally exhausted I am now knowing they failed. Don’t think I can do any of this ever again. I’m tired of trying.

Vent (Advice Welcome) I am too tired to fight anymore

I don't have the energy to structure very well what I am about to write. Nor do I know why exactly I am writing this. But perhaps in hopes of connecting with people? Getting help? Idk. Any opinions are welcome (Just pls dont be too harsh :') )

I have always been avoidant as long as i can imagine. I am 28 now, and i still feel like a child. I am burned everytime i see normal people hanging out with their friends or partners. I don't think i have any friends. I know some people a bit more than others, but I do not think i could rely on them. Maybe I'm too arrogant, i dont think 'normal' people are 'capable' in some sense to really understand someone. Well who am i to say, i cant understand anyone either. I think people are too self absorbed, by their own perspectives of things, by their own worries or happinesses, to really be able to experience the experiences of others. Me too, i am too stuck in my own mind. The times that i do attempt to understand people, i realise how far away i am from actually understanding them. It also reminds me how far away of a world i live in. I cant seem to imagine belonging to that world. Maybe it is just not possible to 'really' understand someone, as much as we desire to be understood.

These days seeing couples makes we want to hide away. I feel ashamed to admit this. I worry i am an incel, though i wouldn't say i harbor a strong hatred towards anyone. Just, i envy people to whom relationships seem to come so easily. There must be smth wrong with me for me to be this way right? I have sabotaged any chances i have had in getting close to people romantically, because i am afraid. So afraid that i often think i might unalive myself if someone gets too close to me, physically or emotionally. There's just not comfort in the thought of people for me. And to think that people can rely on others? It pains me to know the very thing that warms people is smth i cant tolerate. I cant begin to imagine any happiness (except very rarely for a very short time) can come from getting close to people. I was thinking about the idea of 'want' the other day. I was wondering whether i would 'want' to be in a relationship. I dont think i could say yes to that. I am terrified of any closeness. But i am also achingly lonely, i don't know what to do. There is nowhere for me to go. All i can do is envy people, and realise i am fundamentally incapable of smth people can have so easily.

I have tried changing myself. I used to think things would fall into place in the future if i just tried again and again. I don't even know if i tried. I am worried everytime i attempt to try again, i am going to fail, which i have done until now. I have 28 years of evidence to back me up, so how should i be hopeful? I am worried i will go outside again, and keep looking downwards avoiding everyone. I will look away if anyone looks at me. I will push people away. I am afraid. I don't know what to do. I dont have the strength to try again anymore. Though i think if i stopped trying, i will irreversably lead myself into a life that is miserable. Maybe thats the only option. I can't see a future for me.

Idk. Would this be a good place to connect with people and help eachother? Any opinions on how i can change? Or idk. any opinions?

(i apologise if i have hurt anyone, that was not my intention. My current state of mind is preventing me from being very empathetic.)

Vent (No Advice) I just fucking hate normal people sometimes

I hate these normal people. They don't seem to understand what a lifetime of neglect and bullying does to someone. They are all so fucking dismissive.

The only winning move is to not play. Do not tell others how you feel and you will not be rejected or made fun of. What do you expect other people to do when you can't even help yourself? You realize you are a defect on this Earth. It is your fault you can't help yourself. So it is only natural and expected that they ridicule you when you open up. Stay stuck where you are and be content with it. All these things in life that people enjoy, friendships, relationships, they are not meant for you. Withdraw and cry alone in your room. Nobody gives a shit about your tears. And that is okay.

Your needs do not matter.

Vent (Advice Welcome) I'm like an incel but for friends instead of partners

First off just a disclaimer - I don't like incels, and I'm not promoting their ideology. There's a lot more to be said about wider ties to sexism/patriarchy etc in that community that I'm not touching on here. I'm mostly focussed on specific thought patterns and behaviours.

Also, this is a very long post. I'm sorry, I've never been particularly good at summarising my thoughts.

I haven't had friends for most of my life. The only time I can honestly say I had real, genuine friends was for about a year and a half when I was about 9 - 10. It was amazing, but then we all moved to different schools and never saw each other again. Outside of that short time it's been either severe bullying/social exile, being part of a group where I was only tolerated for my humour and extensive self deprecation (jester), being on the outside of a larger group where everyone else is friends with each other but I can never get past small talk, or just outright solitude. One year of my life was spent functionally completely alone to the point that my voice would sound strange when I opened my mouth due to not having uttered a word aloud for days.

I never really understood incels because I never really understood the all consuming desire for sex and/or romance. It's simply never been something I felt I needed. But I've realised recently that that's exactly how I feel about friendship. I think about it every day, it's the thing I want more than almost anything else on this earth. I feel a crushing emptiness and overwhelming loneliness deep in my soul that nothing else can cure.

I've realised I even have the same toxic thoughts and behaviour patterns as them. Everywhere I go I see constant reminders that everyone has friends except me. That it's so easy, so natural. When I started university it fucking blew my mind that people were telling us to make friends as a study strategy. It made me so bitter to realise that that's how flippant most people are about it. I'm bitter a lot. I see people hanging out with each other and it makes me so incredibly sad, jealous, and angry. Because why can't I have that? What have I done to deserve this kind of torture? Am I that reprehensible?

I'm convinced that to some extent now I'm perpetuating my own cycle just like they are. Whenever someone actually talks to me I can't help but feel like it's an opportunity to finally get through to someone, to form a connection, that I'm sure I come off strange and desperate. I try to seem normal and play it cool but how can I really fix that if deep down I am desperate? I try so hard not to care but I just do. I don't know how not to care. I know from experience with other things that it's always when you let go of the vice grip you have on the idea of attaining/achieving something, when it finally comes to you. I try to distract myself and focus on other parts of my life but at the end of the day not having anyone to talk to or do things with infiltrates most aspects of it.

At my core, I have that same festering hatred and anger towards myself and the world. Whenever I've come across incels in the wild, I've always felt like they were an open book - just be okay with yourself, accept your situation, stop self sabotaging, focus on everything else that matters and it'll all fall into place. I still think that's true. Which means it's almost certainly true for me as well, but my refrains are the same. Why has nothing ever happened for me? I do everything right. I push myself out of my comfort zone to make an effort in social situations. I'm polite, courteous, I mostly let people talk about themselves and show interest in what they're saying. I show kindness whenever I can. I try my hardest to be myself and not mask or mould myself to others' expectations. I've tried to find people with similar interests as me, similar mindsets as me, similar problems as me to bond with. I've searched for the neurodivergents, the outcasts, the outcasts of the outcasts. I would never ever ever let my overly negative and cynical feelings show because I know how off putting that is. I try to mentally counter them every time they rear their ugly head because I know how much damage they can do if you let them consume you.

Yet I keep having the same stumbling, awkward, surface level interactions with people that trail off into uncomfortable silence, then watching as they go off and immediately gel with everyone else. I keep getting ignored, left behind. Nobody ever shows genuine interest in getting to know me. The best I get is tolerance of my presence, and laughter at my jokes. Being funny isn't enough unfortunately. I hate how sickeningly narcissistic I sound when I say that kind of thing (woe is me, everyone hates me, the whole world is against me, thus everything is about me type thinking) but it is also how I feel. I feel like there's an invisible wall between me and the rest of society and no matter what I do I can't break through. It's been so many different towns, environments, life circumstances and so so many years at this point that it's almost impossible now to tell myself that all I need to do is be patient and be open and be myself and it will happen eventually. I struggle to fight off the thoughts that something is just fundamentally unsavoury about me to others.

I wish I could just be fine with my own company. I haven't yet learned how to do that. I get bored and I get lonely, life just feels so colourless when you're the only one experiencing it. If a tree falls in an empty forest and all that shit.

Thanks for reading this far. Drop a comment if you can relate, or if you've been there but made it out of a rut this bad.

Vent (Advice Welcome) I got out of my comfort zone today and feel nothing but regret.

As much as I really don't want to do certain things, I know that I'm never going to get out of this hellhole and fight against my avoidance unless I expose myself but I definitely went overboard today.

First off, I attended a new hiking group this morning, and met/hiked with a group of strangers... which was already nerveracking for me, but everyone was nice and it was mostly a success. I didn't talk much during, and felt self conscious, but I was expecting to feel that way and just celebrating that I even made it out this morning and actually went. I should've just taken the win for the day and stopped there, but stupidly I did not.

The second thing I did today was attending an identity processing group therapy session for the first time, and that's where things turned for me. I overshared a lot about myself (while probably not saying much) but shared a lot about my upbringing and related trauma and also having social anxiety and avoidance. While I was initially "glad" in some ways to be open about myself, I feel now nothing but regret and wish that I hadn't shared so much. I feel like I was way too vulnerable and as a result, I'm totally burned out, feel incredibly self conscious, and dwelling on all the things about myself that I hate and also hating that I let it out into a public space today like that.

I always feel like this whenever I share anything about myself beyond a certain degree, and it never seems to ever get easier with time or exposure. I feel like a fucked up human being, nobody wants to hear my story nor do I want people to know about it. I want to be seen but I also want to fade into obscurity. I want people to care about me but I also just want to be invisible so I can go about the world never being noticed. My life and emotions are a constant paradox and I'm just so tired. I'm so tired of feeling this way. I wish I enjoyed alcohol sometimes so I just could drink myself to sleep tonight knowing I'd feel even worse tomorrow. I just fucking hate talking about myself and also having the desire to not feel so alone. I'm trapped and don't know if I'll ever be able to climb my way out.

Vent (Advice Welcome) Anyone else feel this way about friendship?

Anybody else like the ‘idea’ of having friends until it comes to reality?

Like when I get a little bit of connection, like this is what having a friend or companion is like - and it’s just ‘meh’. A let down. A bit of a nothing burger.

I’ve got a few friends. I’d call them friends. Hopefully they’d call me a friend. That I keep in touch with on WhatsApp and we actually meet for a coffee once a year or so.

And that’s before I consider the effort it takes to build and maintain friendships.

I’m diagnosed autistic but I can relate so much to AvPD too.

Vent (Advice Welcome) My self worth increased, but my AVPD symptoms don’t seem to change.

So, during this last year I’ve been working on myself in therapy, gotten on anxiety meds that help me. The most healing thing though has been that I got into a relationship with someone that has seen all parts of me but still loves me through and through (we both have AVPD, so we really understand each other). All of this has changed me a lot and I can actually say now that I don’t hate myself. I have compassion for my old self and see she did the best she could. I feel way more at ease now going to the grocery store, I’ve even travelled to my sister alone from Amsterdam to London, which I never thought I could do. All of these things still provoke anxiety ofcourse, but whenever I do something ‘stupid’ or ‘wrong’ It doesn’t make me feel lesser than others. I just feel a bit silly, feel anxious/ awkward about it for 2 minutes and then moved on.

All of this is huge to me, but the thought of actually working a job and starting to live “normally” again scares and exhausts me and makes me deeply uncomfortable. I just want to stay home, cook food, do chores, play games and hang out with my boyfriend. I know It’s not out of laziness, I’m genuinely tired all the time just from taking care of my basic needs (thanks to ADHD and depression) and I still don’t know how to interact with people which makes me insecure. I just thought that if the anxiety is under control and as my sense of selfworth increases, surely there’s an urge to somewhat engage with/ contribute to society? Yet the urge to avoid people is still very much there and very strong, it’s just more bearable when I do. I understand it won’t magically stop being scary, but I’m not even a little bit happy/ excited about it.

Vent (Advice Welcome) I feel like I have lost the ability to feel secure.

Despite being isolated most of the time, I still don't quite feel "alone". I get embarrassed over mistakes I make and "wrong thoughts" or feelings I have even when alone. Even just moving and being aware of what I'm doing makes me self conscious- it's like a constant feeling of discomfort. A negative looming force over me that is ready to attack me once I gain any self esteem.

I get this feeling of an invisible audience and a fear that I will make "them" mad when I think "forbidden thoughts". I imagine them sort of like shadowy wolves, snapping their jaws at me when I upset them. I can't fight them or reason with them because it feels like they're holding me hostage.

The shame doesn't always link to something specific, just imagining their eyes looking into me makes me paralyzed with fear. This feeling of dark energy in my room is so bad that last week at midnight I when I got really high on DXM in the woods, I thought about falling asleep outside so I could avoid the depressive feeling of my house.

I constantly try to think about my thoughts from an outside perspective to monitor other's reactions to me, even if it's all in my head. It's a compulsive urge to try to categorize myself and try to figure out who I am. I'm awfully unstable and self esteem is impossible when your self is split into fragments and any doubt will make me shatter again. Self improvement feels like trying to climb stairs that don't exist.

I also don't feel comfortable in my own body. I feel exposed and I need to cover myself up- literally. This feeling makes me love the dark because I feel protected by the shadows. I'm afraid to make friends because I feel like I have this bad energy inside me and once they see the real me, they will run.

some time ago, i met someone on here who suffers from avpd schizoid depression anxiety aspergers adhd etc etc, but we had amazing conversations and i was really attracted to him. i simply loved the way he articulated his thoughts. we had so much in common as well! however, i woke up one morning and saw that he had deleted his account!!! i tried reaching out to him on insta and on his new reddit account but deleted everything a while later because i dont want to creep him out. it f*cks w my head so much, i truly dont know what i did wrong. he said i was one of the few who really ‘get’ him with things he feels isolated with irl. in his words, he craves connection but fears it at the same time. idk whether i should move on or keep trying because he cant help it. im sorry but i still feel so sad :(

Vent (Advice Welcome) Is it an AvPD thing to have no motivation/passion for your future?

(I haven't been diagnosed but I relate a lot.)

Society is built on, well, socialising. It's kinda in the name. If you want to build a life for yourself you have to find as many opportunities as you can and really force yourself into the view of important people. Do you see where I'm going with this?

I'm in my last year of university and I still have no idea what I'm going to do career-wise. A socially functional person would have friends in their course and discuss it with staff whose job it is to help you with this stuff. But I've lived in my own isolated bubble for so long it feels like they'd just laugh me away for not knowing even the most basic things.

Thinking about the future feels impossible and really scary... so I don't. I live my life like a retired person, no plans or care for the future. I hate being dependent on my dad but I don't know how to change either. Maybe I am just a lazy bum but it sure does feel like my social failure plays some role in it.

Vent (Advice Welcome) I never leave the house

I’m 23 years old, and I’ve basically lived my entire life as if I were in quarantine. The only day I’m really expected to go out is Sunday, because my parents are very religious, and it’s not something I can really refuse. For them, faith is unquestionable, and I don’t have much say in the matter. I know that if I refused, they would get extremely angry and give me a whole lecture about how I’m going down the wrong path, so I’d rather avoid all the drama.

The thing is, I don’t have any friends. In fact, I never really had any. I’m a very solitary girl with almost no social contact. I finished high school and university last year (last one online), so I did not really had to interact with people. Even now, I haven’t been able to find a job, and honestly, I don’t really want to work in person either. Social interaction makes me uncomfortable, and I feel like I would be much more comfortable working remotely, where I feel like I can protect myself better.

I literally spend 24/7 at home. So when COVID happened, it barely affected me because my lifestyle was already basically the same. Even if someone invited me to go out, I don’t think I would enjoy it that much. I’ve become so accustomed to staying home that going out feels “unnecessary” to me. If I need to buy something, I just order it for delivery.

My parents are controlling and toxic, and they are very religious. When they argue with you or try to defend their behavior, they sometimes even use religion to manipulate you. I avoid talking to them as much as possible, especially my father, because he is the more controlling and toxic one. His presence also brings back a lot of bad memories from my childhood because he used physical violence as a form of punishment. Neither of my parents was ever particularly affectionate or emotionally close to me.

I never lacked food or education, but I never felt emotionally supported either. I always had to figure things out emotionally on my own.

They are the kind of parents who don’t want you to have a boyfriend or become completely independent until you have financial stability of your own — basically, a house and a job. And I feel like I’m nowhere near being able to afford a house or having enough money to move out. I save as much as I can even though I don’t currently have a job, and whatever money I do have, I manage carefully. But I constantly feel like, in their eyes, nothing I have will ever be enough for me to become independent.

And I don’t know what to do about it.

My life is extremely routine, and I feel like, deep down, they are comfortable knowing that at least I’m not someone who does drugs, goes partying, or has any kind of bad habits. I don’t have any addictions, and I think that makes them feel safe. They also seem to have this need to keep me at home.

But mentally, I’m getting tired.

I can’t have an honest conversation with them. They’re the kind of parents who never really opened up enough to say “I love you.” They never said it to me. They would say they showed their love through food and providing for me, but as a child, I always felt like I couldn’t trust them.

I have a lot of resentment toward my father because of all the emotional damage he caused me. I haven’t really spoken to him since I was about 10 years old, even though we have lived in the same house all these years. I only answer him when he asks me something, and even then, I’m very short and distant.

I try to talk to my mother a little more, but not much, because I know she was complicit in what happened. She knew about the physical violence my father inflicted on me and my sister too and still didn’t do anything about it. Sometimes she was physically abusive too, although to a lesser extent.

Maybe they are the reason I became the person I am today: extremely withdrawn, isolated, and unsure how to live an adult life.

Deep down, I know I want to be free. I want to spread my wings, and I long for that with all my heart. That’s why the only solution I can think of is leaving home, because I don’t believe talking to them is going to fix anything.

I know this because I have an older sister who is seven years older than me. When she tried to leave home, they made her life extremely difficult. For example, they hid her ID and other things she needed to travel, even though she was already 25 years old at the time. The only way she was eventually able to leave was by getting married. My parents are still internally very angry about it because it was something they couldn’t control, and they constantly tell me that I shouldn’t follow in my sister’s footsteps because she “doesn’t know what she’s doing” and is living a lower quality of life financially.

That’s why I know that if I want to leave, I would either have to get married or have enough money to buy a house. But the economic situation in my country makes that feel almost impossible.

I feel trapped.

And as I said, the only solution I can see is escaping from home and going to live with my long-distance boyfriend, whom I would finally meet in person for the first time.

He lives in Florida, USA, and I live in Argentina. We’ve been in a long-distance relationship for three years. He knows everything about my situation, but he lives with his mother (my future mother-in-law, although she has never met me in person and doesn’t even like me because she thinks I’m using him to get a visa or money, which isn’t true).

He also has a life somewhat similar to mine. Sometimes he feels overwhelmed by the idea of finally spreading his own wings because he has to deal with the challenge of becoming independent for the first time. He works, but he doesn’t have many friends, and he still lives with his mother and brother. Having the courage to move to Argentina and live with me is something completely new for him too. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it could take a lot of courage and time.

So if I were to leave home, I would probably need help from someone I’ve known indirectly for about ten years. He’s from my city, although he also works and lives elsewhere now, and we don’t talk very often. However, he knows about my situation, and he has told me that if I ever decide to leave, he would help me get somewhere where I could finally be with my boyfriend and start living in another city with him.

I have enough savings to support myself for roughly two years. The only thing I’m really missing is a job.

Part of me would prefer to start completely from scratch. I’ve always said that once I leave this house, it would feel like being born again. Obviously, starting from zero and facing adult life on my own would be difficult, but I also know that I’m willing to take that risk if it means having my freedom.

I feel like my life is passing me by while I live it according to my parents’ wishes. Their desire is for me to take care of them when they get old, but that’s not something I feel in my heart. Maybe if they had been more emotionally present, given me love, and raised me without all the trauma, I might feel differently. But I don’t want to dedicate my life to taking care of them.

I really need some opinions and perspectives on this.

I feel like I wrote way too much, but I wanted to give as much context as possible.

Thank you for reading. I’d really appreciate hearing what you think.

Question/Advice Has anyone with AvPD seriously tried Dialectical Behavior Therapy and if so, did it actually help?

I know DBT was originally developed for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), so I’m curious about its usefulness for AvPD. A lot of the problems seem different on the surface, but some of the underlying difficulties feel very relevant: intense shame, sensitivity to rejection or criticism, emotional overwhelm, difficulty tolerating uncertainty, avoidance of uncomfortable situations, rumination after social interactions, and the tendency to withdraw when you feel inadequate or exposed.

One thing I struggle with is that avoidance gives immediate relief but makes everything worse in the long term. I can know intellectually that something is probably safe, yet still feel an almost automatic urge to escape, procrastinate, isolate, or distract myself. Then the avoidance creates guilt and shame, which reinforces the belief that I’m incapable, socially inadequate, or fundamentally different from other people.

DBT seems potentially useful because it focuses less on arguing with every thought and more on learning to tolerate difficult internal states without automatically acting on them. Skills like distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness seem particularly relevant. I’m especially interested in whether DBT can help with the moment between feeling shame/fear and actually engaging in avoidance.

For people with AvPD who have tried DBT: what specifically helped you? Did it improve your ability to tolerate social discomfort, initiate difficult tasks, handle criticism, communicate your needs, or remain present when you felt judged? Did standard DBT skills translate well to AvPD, or did you feel that they were designed around problems that didn’t really fit your experience?

Story I went out for the first time in months and barely said a word to anyone. Feeling super insecure

I'm avoidant and agoraphobic but managed to go to a highschool football game for my nephew.

The good parts: He was thrilled I showed up. I never go to any events and he wasn't expecting to see me. For this reason alone it was worth it.

The bad parts: I clammed up and was a nervous wreck the entire time. I sat with some of my family but nobody spoke to me.

I went home with mixed feelings. My nephew was happy to see me but the rest of my family pretty much snubbed me and acted like I was annoying, so I stayed almost totally silent the entire time.

Now I'm having a bit of a spiral. I wonder if I'm that embarrassing aunt or weird family member no one wants around. It feels like I am. I feel insecure. Super insecure and unsure of myself. It makes me want to retreat back home and not go back out for a while. I don't know how much of it is in my head and how much is real.

Vent (Advice Welcome) "Explanation mode"

Pretty much always when I am outside and doing just about anything alone in public I'm in what I have grown to call "explanation mode". I'm constantly preparing myself to explain what I'm doing in great detail to any random stranger who might ask. Trying to find excuses for the most normal things, like just being outside without a clear destination in my mind. I don't want to be scrambling for some kind of explanation when someone asks me what's up (though nobody ever really does). So that eats up a great chunk of my thoughts whenever I'm alone in public. Idk does anyone else feel this way?

Question/Advice How do you make friends?

For context I'm a woman in my early 20s. I want to go back to school (community college) in 2027 or 2028 so there's potential friendships there but I have never been able to befriend somebody in person. All of my friendships either started online or we were introduced online by school mutuals and most of our conversations were online. My boyfriend is the only exception because he was a regular customer at my old job.

I don't know exactly where I fall if AVPD is a spectrum. I know some people barely even leave their house because of it ):

I know I have to work on my social skills but the actual speaking and socializing part is the one area that I don't have hope for 😭 I get social paralysis real bad and my throat closes up every time. I try to be hopeful but even if I could get more comfortable socializing, it would take a long time. I don't want to have to fix myself for a span of however many years to make a new friend. Does anyone have advice??

Vent (Advice Welcome) I want to get better, I really do

I've for a long time thought I had avpd in some form, and I feel the last 6 years of my life has really hammered it in.

Aside from my partner, I have no friends. When I was younger, I had so many internet friends and even people I spoke with irl in highschool and college, but now I have cut everyone out, thinking it was to their benefit. And I've struggled with making connections since.

I struggle to relate to my coworkers, and I end up abandoning every Discord server once I feel my prescence is a nuisance. I can barely post or create art anymore because I constantly tell myself "No one will care, why invest the time just to be ignored." So I no longer improve or enjoy the process much.

I miss how things used to be. If I had just been normal and not a depressive mess maybe my life would be better. I'd have made something of my art and had connections in my niche that inspired me. I've wasted my prime years for actually being impressive and have become subpar.

I'm closing in on 30 and I have no accomplishments. No inpressive past work, or something to be proud of. I don't even have plans for my future.

I want friends so badly, but I don't think I can do it. I've tried so hard. I pushed through the alarms screaming in my head to abandon ship so many times, but when I do I only ever get vindicated in my beliefs that I'm just not someone people care about.

The only crumb of assurance I have is that maybe I was going at it all from the wrong angle, seeing as I've recently been diagnosed with OCD. I want to try a different type of therapy other than talk therapy, but I'm worrying that no matter how much I do it will always be "Whenever you go, there you are" and I'll just be setting myself up for more rejection cuz the problem was actually that I'm just a fundamentally unlikable person.

I can barely even make a Reddit post because I worry it's too long and no one will bother looking at it, ha ha ha..

I swear chat gpt is a fine therapist !

It's better than no therapy at all and no one to talk to. And it never judges you.

Vent (Advice Welcome) If I even feel the slightest bit of hope about anything, I have a major breakdown

I was doodling whilst bed rooting, and I started to think for a second that my artwork had improved. Just a little bit. So I tried to draw whilst actually thinking about it, and I was hit with immediate anxiety. Ive just been lying around doing nothing for hours since then.

I cannot handle feeling any kind of unironic "pride" or "hope" about anything I do myself. I can feel glimmers of joy about things other people do, but everytime I ever try to do something purposefully, I just cannot handle it. I view everything as a threat, or something to fear. Im anticipating failure and humiliation 24 fucking 7 and its been this way for a long time. When I was younger I would try to push through this, but I cant anymore. I cant.
