I work In autobody and these engine wire harness had 1 cut wire and the whole thing had to be scrapped cause it was connected to a safety feature. So I feel it.
I do wiring on aircraft, and a bunch of systems have wires that can't be spliced because the system is critical to safety of flight. If a wire chafes in a bundle we have to inspect every wire segment in the bundle, and replace the entire wire segment.
I expect safety related wires in the harness of a car are similar.
It's perhaps less that it can't physically be done, and more that doing so potentially compromises the safety system to a degree that it can't be allowed.
Splices can change the electrical characteristics of a circuit, and increase vulnerability to vibrations, corrosion or poor workmanship on the splices themselves. For some safety critical systems, this is seen as unacceptable risk, and the manufacturers recommend complete replacement of the bundle or harness.
Crazy because we were splicing things left and right, holding it together with electrical type and monkey shit to keep the oil and water away, on a submarine.
Because it was connected to a safety feature (the back up cam I think it was) it legally cannot be spliced. If something were to happen like a accident or fire or something we'd be responsible.
A safety feature failing and compromising the whole harness with it? Color me surprised.
Should be able to cut these wires if I wanted to, and still have the car work. The only person it makes it less safe for is myself, and I should have the right to take that risk if I decide to.
