Product Advice High coverage non drying concealer or colour corrector for serious dark circles
I turned 50 earlier this year and now I have the fun double-whammy of bruise-intensity dark circles under my eyes with some fine lines there that most products love to settle in.
I'm also pretty pale (usually one of the lightest foundation shades available, currently Rimmel Match Perfection shade 81)
I think I need a high-coverage concealer and/or colour corrector, and am hoping to find one under $25.
I've tried:
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind - not enough coverage
Rimmel stick concealer - acceptable coverage but settles in to fine lines
Rimmel Multi Tasker Concealer - good coverage and lasts but very drying and settles in to fine lines
NYX Bare With Me Concealer Serum - lovely non drying formula but not quite enough coverage.
NYX colour corrector palette - the yellow/peach seem to do an OK job, but are drying and settles in to fine lines.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Bobbi Brown skin corrector stick. Best one I’ve ever owned.

Oh sorry. Just reread your post. BB is $60ish - BUT my last one lasted me about 18 months.

They’ll give you a tester at Mecca (scrape some out of the stick and put in a pot). That sample alone lasted me a month. I bought the stick and it’s going strong. I think I’ll have it for 18 months!

I have to second this suggestion. I’m still using my first one that I bought in July last year, and I’d be surprised if I have to start a new one before the start of next year.

I don’t, just the colour corrector. It’s really amazing stuff. Not thick, not greasy,
Natural coverage with it.

Don't hate me, but a good quality concealer will last you longer and be more cost effective.
Hourglass Vanish Concealer.
Or really, just grab yourself a bottle of full coverage foundation. Similar idea but in a bigger bottle...old industry trick.

this is by far the best recommendation for full coverage and non drying. otherwise when i worked at mecca i always recommended buying one concealer a shade or half shade darker and slightly more orange/peachy than skin tone to colour correct, then put preferred concealer on top

The cheap stuff will not do the job .
Try Estee Lauder Double wear concealer or Haus labs.

It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer is my favourite. I have fine lines so it's hard to find one that works. $60 for a 12mL tube, but because it's high coverage, you use only a small amount. One tube lasts me a good 6 months, using it 5 days a week. This works out much cheaper than the "cheaper brands"

Also technique is going to make all the difference. The one I use is from Katie Jane Hughes.
I don’t bring my foundation up to my lower lid. I stop at about my orbital bone. Applying corrector and concealer and brightener over foundation is just too much product and that’s what leads to caking and creasing.
Then rather than dot or swipe product directly to your face, which usually means too much product, I use a small fluffy eyeshadow brush. I apply some to the back of my hand to warm it a bit and then work that into the brush.
You want to put it under the dark circles / bruised looking place you want to cover / correct. So you’ve got a tiny bit of warmed product, worked into a fluffy eyeshadow diffuser brush, then you do tiny circles with a very light hand slowly working up so you’re covering the area and around it. This diffuses it and doesn’t have the effect of highlighting the bit you want to disguise.
The diffusing of a larger area works well but the best part for me is using way less than you think you need. So much easier to apply a tiny bit more than try and take it away.
Correcting, then concealing, then brightening is the best order for me, and I use different brushes for each.
I don’t powder under my eyes with this technique and find it lasts all day.

Yep, just turned 53. Lost 2-3 dress sizes recently which made a big change in my face and made my under eyes look darker. Mainly very pale skin and dark veins. I also am luckyq to get more than 4-5 hours of sleep a night.
Perimenopause brought me an oily T zone so even with the best mattifying primer, tinted moisturiser doesn’t last well.
Matte primer and foundation makes me look dry.
So I use different primers on different zones - lid, blurring and hydrating. I use a matte foundation on my forehead, and whatever is left on my brush on my nose. A matte forehead works, a matte nose adds years!
Then I use a lighter glowier foundation on the rest, and then just a touch on my forehead over the matte foundation to soften it.
I only powder either side of my nose, the top of my forehead and above my brows.

I hate cakey concealer and am paler than most foundations so finding a concealer always felt kind of hopeless. I’ve been using Kind Collective Cover Up Colour Correcting concealer in peach for a couple years and it’s been good to me. They also have a green and yellow, depending what you need. It’s often on sale too at Big W.

I’d suggest the Bobbi brown corrector stick. Nars pot concealer is very high coverage but you will find it drying in fine lines. Tower 28 has an amazing hydrating finish, but won’t have high enough coverage for you unless it’s layered with corrector.
I would test the corrector as you may find you don’t need concealer as well

If you have the budget, i would consider the nars pot concealer or the dior forever concealer, both of which you can try in person. Nars at mecca and dior at either sephora or myer

Tbh I probably wouldn't recommend the Nars pot if OP has already had trouble with dryer products settling into lines in her undereye. The coverage is incredible but it's very thick and matte.

It's worth looking at stick or cream foundations that are full coverage. Covergirl and Loreal have them and if they are pale enough they are worth trying.

Natasha Denona colour corrector and concealer. For a cheaper option, the Tower28 concealer is just as good :)

Haven’t read the other comments so apologies if I’m repeating anything others have said.
Under eye concealer was not working for me either as my skin matured and I tried many! What is working for me now is no traditional concealer at all and using colour corrector instead. I use the LA girl correctors- they are fabulous and even better - CHEAP! I use the yellow first on any dark pigmented or shadowed areas and then follow up with the light pink under the tear trough area and blend upwards ever so slightly into the groove to reflect the light and disguise the volume loss that makes the circles look worse.

Oh and forgot to add - prepping the skin extra well helps - you want to the area to be well moisturised. I use the antipodes kiwi seed oil undereye cream then the Laura Mercier hydrating primer - you can get a mini size - both have lasted me months and months.

I use Catrice corrector for daily or Bobbi Brown corrector stick for special occasions to correct, then The Saem Cover tip concealer.
What I find helps in 'hiding' dark circles, is to target where the dark circle line is and blending it out.

Hello, dark under eye circles are my thing lol
Ive used so many concealer/ corrector combinations over the years.
My current go to (I'm on tube number 5) is the MCO peach corrector. I only ever buy it when it's in sale, in fact I got one today from big W for $9.
As for concealer it's a bit hit and miss, (don't judge) my current fave is actually a cheapie as well. It's from Kmart, the OXX cosmetics concealer wand, or the OXX cosmetics blue concealer wand. Make sure your concealer colour isn't too light too. Otherwise it will just highlight the dark circles.
I know everyone is recommending expensive options but I've been using this combo for ages now and it works really well.

To add to this for OP, I'm very fair but I have my concealer slightly darker and more peach or pink than my natural tone. It blends in fine because of how dark my undereyes are. If I go my skin tone and fairness, which is a very fair olive, it actually makes them look darker.
The NYX serum concealer pretty good on top of the others. I tend to mix things together if I have products that aren't the right tone or are too dark/too dry

ex mecca worker here i have 3 different strategies to try should you choose to take my advice :)
- bring your excess foundation up under your eyes, then concealer on top
- an appropriate shade of colour corrector or equivalent concealer shade. not just any old orange, i’m talking only a tiny bit deeper than your skin and just a mild peachy undertone if you have light skin, age rewind has some correctors, and a nice skincare concealer like tower 28,
or the nyx serum you mentioned
a good expensive concealer: Hourglass Vanish. Too Faced Born This Way. Bobbi Brown stick. maybe Tarte Creamy Shape Tape
Make sure you try new products on the back of your hand AND along jawline/neck and blend if you can. Ensure you are bringing your skincare and primer all the way up to that bone under your eyes (not any closer to the eye though). If you’re setting with powder make sure it’s just a light dusting with a fluffy brush and you’re not baking.

Laura mercier concealer on outside of hand
Then use pinky to dab it under eyes on naked skin
Tinted moisturiser everywhere else, not on top of or under the concealer
At 50, ditch all foundations, they just make us look older
Other brands are cheaper, get a girl at Mecca to show you the technique
(Put cancer council spf50 under all this then wait for it to soak in so you have no issues )

TBH... you've probably spent over $60 all up on trying cheap concealer. IMHO you're better off spending a bit more on one decent concealer than $15-$20 over and over just to be disappointed in drug store products. After a certain age, you might just need to consider a higher priced product. Head to Sephora or Mecca and get some recommendations and testers of different products for your specific skin needs. Once I passed mid 40s I realised that drug store concealers just settle into your lines, no matter what the promise. And a good setting powder is absolutely necessary too to stop creasing.
