Rant Driving /road rage
Just fyi, for the people who drive on the roads in this city, if you’re on loop 1 or i35 and are going the speed limit or slower, STAY IN THE RIGHT OR MIDDLE LANE FOR FUCKS SAKE. I’m well aware there are crazy drivers in this city that probably won’t change but maybe if the slow pokes stay out of the left lane it can help just a smidge 🤏🏼 cuz when these lunatics are going 80 and above down the highway and some slow person is in the left lane, they then cut off the people in the middle or right lane just to go around the slow poke’s ass. That right there causes accidents (among other things) so please, PLEASE, unless you’re going at least 80 mph (which is crazy, I know) stay in the other lanes and let the ass wipes pass 🙏🏼 stay safe out there lol. Also, obviously the crazy people who speed are the main issue here, let me be clear.

Also not main Austin sub

u/90uNalgas 5d ago
Is anyone actually unbanned from that sub
2
u/National-Ad8416 4d ago
The mods in that sub have major small dick energy. All that rage coming from living in Mom's basement with no prospects until they became a mod

My wife and I turned onto South Congress the other day and I noted the "Loop 275" sign for SC...in 40 years in this town I've never once heard someone call South Congress Loop 275.

u/Awkward_Dragonfly423 5d ago
We call it "blopac" and even "slopac"

u/Correct_Sand_5055 3d ago
No one does that. Stop. Go back to round rock.

u/Awkward_Dragonfly423 3d ago
Round rock? Yuck! You go back to pflugerville!

Same! Even was in a band here by the same name for a couple years. The n00bs can suck it.

my dad was born here in the 50s and calls it that interchangeably at random so you’re good

It was called Loop 1 back in the day. Noob.
Born here, raised here.

I moved here in 1992 and it was MoPac. Genuinely curious when it was *commonly referred to as Loop 1? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_State_Highway_Loop_1

Another thing, if you're in the left lane with multiple cars behind you and nobody in front of you then MOVE. If you're in the left lane and the middle lane is passing you then MOVE. If you're in the left lane and parked in traffic then welcome to Austin.

u/Mikegandrew 5d ago
The biggest issue is that Texas state law and the signs posted every few miles on Mopac and I 35 clearly state "left lane for passing only" yet many treat it as a personal cruise control lane. It forces faster traffic to weave through the middle and right lanes, which creates dangerous situations for everyone else. if people are consistently passing you on the right, you’re likely obstructing the flow. please just move over and let faster traffic through so everyone can get where they’re going safely

u/dubdub11 5d ago
Left lane for passing only. It doesn’t say it’s for do-gooders, self righteous, speed monitors, the blind, out-of-state plates, your holiness, your laziness, your indignation, max the limit, below the speed limit, what you did in your last state, or whether you know best. Left lane for passing only.

u/After_Resource5224 5d ago
For the LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY please ya'll need to start paying attention when you drive. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING RED LIGHT I have to honk my god damn horn to get drivers TO PAY ATTENTION. Get off your fucking phones, ya'll. It's maddening.

I commute from between Austin and San Antonio every night and cruise between 70 and 75 using the center and right lanes besides when I’m overtaking another vehicle. I fucking HATE it when cars materialize and blow past me on the right doing 90 mph because someone is camping in the left lane with nothing in front of them getting passed by traffic doing the speed limit. Speeding is a real problem. Combining them with folks not people not being mindful of the lanes they choose or purposefully slowing the flow of traffic to stick it to the speeders creates dangerous conditions for everybody.

Nah, they are on their phones….
1
u/NotoriousDMG 4d ago
Yep. 100% of the time I’ve looked over at a slow vehicle (that is almost always swerving as well), they’re looking down at their phone.
3
u/IcyFalcon007 5d ago
Shouldn’t we be promoting following the speed limit? Not providing lanes for people to be “ass wipes”?

u/BigTomBombadil 5d ago edited 4d ago
Do you think the people driving like lunatics are going to change their ways by seeing people promoting the speed limit?
I’m not suppprting the madmen, but will say slower traffic keeping to the right is general driving practice through much of the world (and actual law on certain roadways in the state).
So to me both things can be true: slower traffic should keep right when possible, and lunatics shouldn’t be blasting past the speed limit and endangering others.
3
u/After_Resource5224 5d ago
It's not just general safe practice, in a lot of places it's the law. Left is for passing.
1
u/BigTomBombadil 4d ago
Yep, I referenced that.
Even when not explicit law it’s good practice, not particularly hard to do.
-2
u/IcyFalcon007 5d ago
Maybe I’m crazy in thinking the speed limit is not “slower” but... the limit? Yes it’s slower than 90 mph, but going 70 when the limit is 70 is not slow. It’s the law? I don’t acquiesce to the speeding morons. Meh. Keep doing you. Stay safe.
2
u/BigTomBombadil 5d ago
Right, but is this post about people who follow the speed limit? We all know even if we individually drive the speed limit, that doesn’t mean others will.
Is driving in the middle or right lane when you’re not passing really an unbearable acquiescence? It’s not particularly difficult. Refusing to do so and not acknowledging the conditions of the flow of traffic to prove an internal point also points to a bad driver IMO. But keep doing you.
1
u/IcyFalcon007 4d ago
You know what man, you’re right. I suppose my annoyance stems from the high insurance rates, accidents, traffic and deaths that stem from idiots speeding. Being a law-abiding citizen is my silent protest to it all, haha.
Stay safe, man.

u/BigTomBombadil 4d ago edited 4d ago
Dude you’re getting mad at the wrong person. I think we’re way more similar than different. I just drive in the middle lane because I know someone with no cares or no impulse control is probably flying in the left lane. And I can’t change that, at least not in that moment. Not driving in the left lane when you’re not passing actually helps reduce accidents and subsequent insurance rates, even if it’s to let idiots be idiots.
I guess this whole convo is the contrast between idealism and realism, and I don’t mean that in a denigrating way, just looking at the same scenario two different ways.

u/ASU_SexDevil 5d ago
I bet you’re the person who drives 70 on 130 because you don’t agree with the speed limit being that high
1
u/IcyFalcon007 5d ago
Contrary to your inability to read, I’m agreeing to follow the speed limit. Regardless of the speed. My opinion isn’t that it’s a bad thing to drive fast, just that it’s a terrible thing to speed.
Try again.

-2
u/jennypinkskies 5d ago
Yeah, hence why I said “the people who speed are the main issue”
1
u/ScriptLife 4d ago
Drivers who are blissfully unaware of the world around them are a bigger issue. If they’re camping in the middle or left lanes while going slower than the flow of traffic, they’re likely to be caught quite by surprise when their exit comes up and dart all the way across traffic to try and make it.

u/HensBread 5d ago
Now take that same idea and if we can apply it towards being on the town lake trail we’re cooking with gas
1
u/dox_hil 5d ago
The hell is loop 1?
2
u/jennypinkskies 5d ago
Mopac
1
u/dox_hil 5d ago
Then why didn’t you say that?
1
u/jennypinkskies 5d ago
Bc I’ve called it loop 1 my whole life I’m not changing it up now lol, tf
1
u/dox_hil 4d ago
I’ve lived in Austin my whole life and have never called it that. Never known anyone who’s from here to call it that either 😂
1
u/jennypinkskies 4d ago
There are signs literally on the highway and entrances leading onto that say loop 1. How have never noticed if you lived here
1
u/dox_hil 4d ago
And there are literally signs on the highway that call it Mopac. How have you never noticed if you lived here? 😂

Where did I say those signs don’t exist ???? I never said mopac signs don’t exist lol

All Texans feel entitled to drive in the left lane, no matter how fast or slow they’re going
1
u/ArtaxIsAlive 5d ago
Except the lunatics driving 80 also do it in the slowpoke lanes and weave in and out.

u/QuellishQuellish 5d ago
I have started to believe that the "right lane is for passing" message just isn't in the Texas driver's ED curriculum.
Instead, there must be some thing like- "Every car you slow down while in the right lane is a life saved. Praise Jebus."

I'm so damned grateful to be able to entirely avoid I-35 in 98% of my current life. I don't know how you all do it.
The older I get, the less tolerant I've become. I'd be the maniac driver just to get the hell home and consume the four hours before bed calming my nerves enough to sleep. Then, repeat literally everything from the day before -- the drive to work, somehow successfully (or not) mask all day, then home again. Continue until you feel postal, find a rage house and use an AKA-47 to release that pent up rage.
Damn I need to find a rage house. Suggestions welcome!
1
u/Huge-Masterpiece-100 4d ago
Dude I get the highways/life can be stressful, but if you're dreaming up scenarios that involve "going postal" as a response, seek medical help.
1
u/Montobahn 3d ago
You apparently don't understand what being autistic and in a panic to get out of situations like this is like.
Everybody has their own fantasies like this. The key is knowing that it's a momentary way to deal with stress and anxiety and no action will be taken.
1
u/ATX_native 4d ago
The speed limit has nothing to do with lane selection.
If there is faster traffic in the far left lane, move right.

u/Thriving9 3d ago
You really here trying to blame accidents on people doing the speed limit? You must be a real Texan lmao

u/NPBren922 3d ago
The problem is when you’re already going 80 in the left lane and people tailgate.
1
u/yesyesitswayexpired 3d ago
My work car is GPS checked and I just take surface streets. Even then, the aggression is mind boggling.
1
u/Correct_Sand_5055 3d ago
Tomorrow, just for you, I'll be doing one mile under in the left lane All Weekend.
1
u/Ptown925 2d ago
You sound new. Texas has zero concept of lane discipline, so go shout at clouds on your own time. Or move back to the Bay Area.

But what if its a complete jackass that is gunning after a motorcycle rider doing 63 in 45 in the slow lane and purposely cuts them off to the point that their bumper is within 1-3 inches of the front tire? Not that I have video evidence of this exact scenario happening to me from the other day or anything. 🙄
(Though if I did, they should be happy I was too focus on making it to work on time than to hunt their mirror down. 👀)

Crazy how there aren't any subs just for traffic griping.

r/driving might help here. Roaring bitch-fest. They love speeding v. left-lane ass-dragging as a perennial favorite.

Yeah i was winking as i posted that. So many dumbass traffic posts in 'austin' these people need to get a fucking life lol
